Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1963 volume:

OUR WONDERFUL YEAR IN THE 1963 LION In years to come if you have grown somewhat serious with the cares and responsibilities of life; if the memory of your high school days has dimmed by the passing of time and if you should look back over this ann- ual, we the Staff, hope that it will always revive for you with warm spirit one of the most wonderful years of your life .... For many it was a year of beginnings with new demands and new changes; for others it was a time of learning and challenge. For the Seniors, it was an ending to a period of excitement, hope disappointment, growth, and achievement. As you turn through these pages, both now and in the future, it will mean different things to each of you ... to some it will bring to mind the school spirit, the buildings, the homework, the teachers, the parties, and the clubs. To others, it will recall the waiting in the lunch line, the last minute cramming for exams, the excitement of a close ballgame, the knowledge gained and the knowledge lost, the fads, the songs, the friend- ships never to be replaced or forgotten, and last but not least, the am- bition and hope for a better world tomorrow . . . Bound between these covers, we have attempted to capture in paper and print your part of Searcy High School and, in the years to come by means of THE 1963 LION may you always remember the personalities and activities that made this . . . OUR WONDERFUL YEAR Our wonderful year and most rewarding experiences take place at Searcy High School DEDICATION . . . because you possess an intimate knowledge which you share in interesting and stimulating classes . . . because you have keen judgment and a trait for making friends of both the students and the faculty who respect and admire you . . . because you are young at heart and an inspiration to all .. . and because a person of your stature and character is never of the past but always of the future, we, the annual staff, there- fore proudly dedicate this year and all its happenings with their effects on our future and this record of them, THE 1963 LION , to you . . . MR. DAVIS WEBB IN MEMORY OF JOHN PAUL HAYES July 7, 1962 CAROLYN SMITHEY June 21, 1962 Somewhere back of the sunset Where loveliness never dies They live in a land of glory With the blue and the gold of the skies. And we, who have known and loved them Whose passing has brought no tears; Will cherish their memory always To brighten the drifting years. A discovery Our Wonderful Year Gara Arnholt glances through the glass case at just a few of the many insects and small animals that help compose our wonderful world. Through music and musical instruments we may discover the many possibilities of achievement and appreciation offered to us. ROMANCE Our Wonderful Year Joan Gipson and Keith Cole meet in the locker room to share those few minutes before going to class. Between class snacks are used by Eddie Joe Siler and Gara Arnholt not only for quick energy but also for deepening friendships. A DISAPPOINTMENT Our Wonderful Year The tensions and crises of today's world bring tears and disillusionment to Carolyn Black, Charlene Clay, Carolyn Womack, and Carol Rice. ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Mary Langford Receptionist Mrs. Lerleen Jackson Secretary to the Superintendent Mrs. Chrystal Hardin Secretary to the Principal GUIDANCE Guiding the students of Searcy High School toward a satisfying occupa- tion and a rewarding life is the ob- jective of the Guidance office. With the aid of achievement tests, appro- priate literature, and personal inter- views, the counselor can help each student select a program which will best prepare him to further his ed- ucation in a carefully chosen field or to take his place in the world of business. Mrs. Mary Pitner Guidance Occupations Seniors spent many hours taking tests to determine what career would be best suited to their interests. Mrs. Pitner helps Jimmy Price reach a decision about which school he will attend after graduation in May. HOME ECONOMICS To be a homemaker is the de- sire of most girls, but there is more to being a good homemaker and mother than just marriage, and for this reason courses in Home Eco- nomics, for girls, and Family Liv- ing, for boys, are offered in Searcy High School. In these classes students not only learn food prep- artion and creative sewing but they also learn child care and develop- ment, home management and planning, and personal improvement and understanding. The home economics students learn the art of table manners and courtesy. Mrs. Charlotte Morgan Home Economics Learning to sew is just one of the many things Home Economic students learn throughout the year. ENGLISH Mrs. Helen Sutherlin English The ability to communicate, from day to day, from year to year, binds the people of our world together. In English classes we are given the oppor- tunity to improve our grammar, increase and utilize our vocabulary, and appreciate and understand the literature of the different periods of history. To go beyond these basic requirements of the department, so we can have a more versatile edu- cation, we must strive toward the comprehension of ideas, organization of thoughts, and the ability to express one's self by means of the written and spoken word. But the knowledge gained in class would be of no use to youth unless it instilled the desire for adaption to everyday living, because every day spent in Eng- lish class will determine greatly the situation of the world tomorrow. Miss Lois Thornton English Page 24 Miss Rexann Oiler English Mrs. Larry James English By diagraming sentences on the board, students discover and amend their errors, SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Davis Webb Mr. Carl Steward History Government Government Problems of Democrary World Geography A year is remembered for its many memorable happenings and we have gained many things this year that will help us to achieve the all-important role of future citi- zens. The major aim of Social Studies courses is the training and developing of intel- ligent, responsible citizens. A world history course furnishes students information on history of world cultures and gives understanding of modern world problems. In American history emphasis is placed on a knowledge of Americanism by teaching how America's democratic ideal of free society has influenced her history at home and abroad. Government stresses the importance of being a participating and well-in- formed citizen. The political system of the United States is studied in detail. A course in problems of democracy teaches that even today there is much that we can do in helping keep our country strong. Mr. Fox takes time out to go over a test that he has recently given. Mr. Pat Fox Mrs. Larry James Mr. Wendell Langford History History History Students keep up with world affairs by reading the daily paper. Page 27 The members of this government class spend their time wisely in reviewing for tests. SPEECH and DRAMATICS Gone is the time in which only those with great talent were trained in speech. Because of the wide spread media, radio and television, oral communication is additionally important for every person. The Speech Department endeavors to meet this need by offering classes in speech funda- mentals, public speaking, drama, and speech- drama. Voice improvement, correct pronun- ciation, debate and oratory, and theater arts are all covered in the courses. Mrs. Robert Bell Speech Dramatics Speech students study the quality of the voice by listening to themselves by means of a tape recorder. SPANISH As months pass into years, our once large, uncharted world gradually is growing smaller and more populated as its inhabitants become closer and more intimate. In striving for world- wide unity and peace we must attempt to under- stand our newly acquired neighbors . Therefore, by offering first and second year courses in Spanish, we at Searcy High School may obtain a basis for this understanding of our closest neighbors, South of the Border . Mrs. Helen Sutherlin Spanish Mrs. Eloise Scroggins Math Mr. Pat Fox Math MATHEMATICS Geometric figures, mathematical applications, algebraic operations, and trigonometric functions spill forth from the brains of the math stu- dents of Searcy High School everyday. Though sometimes discouraged and frightened by the seemingly impossibility to understand the course, math students who have taken these courses never forget the class, be- cause the math department is constantly striving to enlighten students in fundamental concepts of mathematics, needed more and more as the years pass by. Many different aids are used to help mathematics students better understand their course. Mr. Carl Steward Biology Mrs. Ruth Fuller Biology. Chemistry. Physics SCIENCES We live in a scientific age and in order for us to receive the most from this time into which we were born we must try in some way to comprehend the many phases and unknowns of science. Courses in biology, chemistry, and physics are offered to students by the Science Department of Searcy High School.many hours spent pondering over some book, experimenting in our well equipped lab, and putting what is learned to use, is repayed a hundred-fold by the ability to understand some of the vast uncertainties of our world. The books, the bugs, and the blackboards are all necessities to a biology class. The physics students study the various behaviors of matter. PHYSICAL EDUC ATION In keeping with the theory that A healthy body houses a healthy mind , the physical ed- ucation department's main goal is to try to keep America's youth physically fit by exercises and active participation in many varied sports. Not only does this endeavor to develop strength, en- durance, and physical toning, but it also encour- ages individual co-operation and enthusiastic group participation. Tumbling is just one of the many courses included in our physical education classes. Coach Wendell Langford Head Football Coach Miss Rachel Greer Girls' Physical Education Coach James Staggs Line Coach HEALTH AND DRIVER’S EDUCATION So that we may always be able to remember this wonderful year, it is of the utmost importance that we know how to care for our bodies, for they are one of our most precious possessions, and their condition will greatly influence the type of future life that we are able to lead. .. So in offering such a course, it is the school's aim to encourage youth to take care of themselves... More than ever before the accident rate in this country is caused by wreckless or careless driving. It is therefore the purpose of Searcy High School's Driver Education program to offer a semester course in education of the fundamentals of driving, the mechanics of an automobile, and the opportunity to actually learn to drive by driving. Mr. Lynn Stewart Driver's Education Health A diagram of the skeletal system helps the health class better understand the working of the human body. Mr. Stewart explains to his beginning drivers the parts of an automobile. SKELETAL SYSTEM SEARCY HIGH SCHOOL t DRIVER EDUCATION C L GNTLE DOMljjIg • HGMTLI I WHITE C01nTV «OTOA CO BUSINESS Courses in business have a two-fold nature- vocational and social; it deals with those aspects of instruction which have to do with developing an understanding of economic life and intelligent consumer use of business services. The primary objectives of the department are to prepare the student to render efficient service in business careers. Mrs. Oweta Humphrey Typing Shorthand Bookkeeping Even putting paper in the typewriter isn't hard once you learn how. LIBRARY Of the things that you have gained and think that you will always remember about this year, it has been proven that only 20 per cent of it will be retained by your mind, so without books to help us to remember and to know what those before us learned and thought, we would event- ually deteriorate as a people. Searcy High School is very fortunate to have a well-equipped library to serve for reference or research information, or purely as a source of enter- tainment. Miss Ruby Langley Librarian Many new books give students a larger and better variety of reading resources. The library is an excellent place to check references for special reports. Pago 35 AGRICULTURE Classroom discussion and practice of par- liamentary procedure are two things that Mr. Hardin stresses in his classes. Carpentry is just one of the fields in which agriculture students are taught to become proficient workmen. Directly or indirectly we are all dependent on the farms and ranches of this great land as a source of supplying our nutritional needs, whether it is the vegetables, the grains, the meat, the milk, or other products they pro- duce. It is somewhat obvious that the study of agriculture is a vital and a rewarding course in any school's curriculum. Mr. Luther Hardin Agriculture DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION and DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS Many graduates face the problems of inex- perience and unemployment. Searcy High School offers on-the-job training in the student's pre- ferred field to enable him to enter the business world upon graduation. Distributive Education is a co-operative program carried out by the high school and the local business establishments. Classwork is designed to give instruction related to the business for which the students are training. Diversified Occupations is a training pro- gram which offers students the opportunity to earn while they learn their vocation. Mr. Cecil Morgan Distributive Education Diversified Occupations Mr. Morgan confers with his students about their various problems. D. E. D. O. students use their classroom knowledge to aid them in their jobs. CHORAL MUSIC To promote an appreciation for one of man's greatest assets—the voice that can sing—and to develop any talent that might be discovered and capitalized on is the aim of the Music Department. Spanning the realm of available songs, the choir, and the special singing group, the Melody Maids, perform, learn, and compete in district and state choral competition. Miss Rexann Oiler Music The Melody Maids perform during the year at various civic and school functions. BAND Many opportunities are offered students of Searcy High School to learn to play a musical instrument and to be a member of the Marching and the Concert bands. In this way, band stu- dents can develop not only potential talent that they might have, but they may also come to appreciate music—from jazz to concert and from marches to dance music. Mr. Daunhauer Band The Searcy High Marching Band spends many hours practicing on their precision drills for half-time entertainment. Page 39 From saxophone to drums and cymbals, every section of the band must play its best for a really good concert band. SERVICE Mr. Ralph Yearby Supervisor of Transportation Mrs. Mae Wilkins SUDervisor of the Lunchroom The custodians, cooks, and bus drivers play an important part in maintaining harmony in a school's everyday life. At Searcy High School we owe much to members of the service department for their efforts, and for all of those little known services which make our time spent at school more profitable and comfortable. For always getting us to and from school; for always feeding us well-rounded and nutritious meals; and for always taking care of the buildings and grounds so we can have a school to be proud of—we will always be indebted to these devoted people for the time and effort they have contributed to making this our won- derful year. The lunchroom assembly line in action-the outcome? A hot, meal. Page 40 After the last bell has rung--then the custodians go to work. Keeping the buses in top running condition is a daily job. DEPARTMENTS Nor rain, nor sleet, nor body ills shall keep these bus drivers from their daily route. Our Wonderful Year Of SENIOR CLASS OF 1963 Jimmy Holmes, President; Lynne Edmonson. Treasurer; Hulrey McMoran. Vice-President; Nancy Dacus, Secretary. Miss Lois Thornton Class Sponsor Miss Lois Thornton is as much a part of Searcy High School as the traditions which make each of its years memorable. As a teacher she excels to the fullest extent in her knowledge of English grammar and literature. Not only does she relate this knowledge to her stu- dents but she prepares them for the years of ed- ucation or occupation ahead. Her well-read mind and her worldly intelligence has earned her the respect of the entire student body. As sponsor of the senior class she takes care of all activities concerning the seniors throughout the year, and she takes special charge of the grad- uation exercises. Because she is intelligent, capable, and com- pete in carrying on her duties as senior class spon- sor, we will always remember her as an intricate part of---------Our Wonderful Year. The primary purpose of the B games are to give the boys experience and to help keep them in shape throughout the year. Page 145 1961-62 SENIOR TRACK TEAM STATE CHAMPIONS Track is primarily an individual challenge, but it takes team support and spirit to produce a winner. Searcy High School's track team this year got off to a good start in the first meet by placing number one in the University of Arkansas High School relay meet. This meet had some 34 different schools from all over the state in attendance. In late April Searcy's cindermen entered the Ouachita relays and in a field of competition of Big Nine AA, A, and B. the team again won first place honor. To high-light the Spring season Searcy returned home to win the county, district, and the state high school meet held at Harding College. For the first time in the history of the school the Lions won the State A Championship, aided by the fine running and pole vault of Jim Tarkington, the broad jump and running of Eddie Pruitt, and the added strength of Hurley Me Moran, Charlie Hill, Charles Kibbe, and Jim Holmes. Searcy was strong in the relays, breaking all county, and district records, quarter mile, broad jumps, but Coach Wendell Langford remarked that with the extra effort each boy exerted, the Lions were definitely the state's best. Coach Wendell Langford, in his second year as head track Coach, has done an exceptionally good job. Bottom row: Mike Sawrie, Bill Moore, Stanley Heard, Randy Murphy, Robin Burns, Hurley McMoran, and Coach Langford. Middle row: Scott Bell. Henry Wilkins, Mark Dunham, and Bobby Brown. Top row: Charles Kibbe. John Paul Hays. Tommy Langley. Larry Nokes Bobby Davis. Gary Overstreet. Mark Harris. Jimmy Holmes. Charlie Hill. Jim Tarkington. and Eddie Pruitt. Tarkington, Pruitt Lead Lions to U.A. Title The Lions amassed 48 points to finish 15 points ahead of runner- up, Siloam Springs, in the University of Arkansas Relays. Tarkington, one of the finest and most versatile athletes ever to come out of Searcy High School, led all class A scorers with 13 3 4 points. Tarkington, running the 180 yard low hurdles for only the second time this year stepped them off in the record breaking time of 21 seconds flat. He also broke his pole vault record of 11'6 with the new vault of 12'10 3 4 , and ran on the 440, 880, and mile relays. Pruitt, another all- around athlete and only a junior, finished right behind Tarkington with 12 3 4 points. He took his specialty, the broad jump, with a fine jump of 21'8 , the top broad jump reported in Arkansas this year. Pruitt's jump also broke his own relays record of 21'6 3 4 , which he had set last year. Other Lions placers include McMoran, 2nd in the 440 yard dash, time 52.9; Charles Kibbe, 3rd in the discus, distance 133'11 ; Jimmy Holmes, 3rd in the 880 yard run, time 2:10.7; and Mike Sawrie, 5th in the mile run, time 5:04.1. Jim Tarkington Relays, Dashes, Pole Vault ■■KMI Eddie Pruitt Relays, Broad Jump LIONS ADD OUACHITA RELAYS TO LAURELS The Lions' superior strength in the relays, pole vault, broad jump, and discus paid off again in the Ouachita relays. Team totals were Searcy-53, Eudora-35, Stamps-30, Nash- ville-25, De Witt-20, and Mineral Springs-20. Once again versatile Jim Tarkington and Eddie Pruitt led the Lions in high scoring honors. Tarkington won first place in the low hurdles and pole vault and ran on the second place 880 yard relay team. Eddie Pruitt finished first place in the broad jump, ran on the 440 and mile relay teams and the second place 880 yard relay. Charles Kibbe took first place honors in the discus. Other Lion placers were McMoran in the 440 yard dash, and Holmes in the mile run. Tarkington, Pruitt, McMoran, and Hill broke every 440-880 and mile relay record of the county, district, and state tins year TARKINGTON’S 12’ LIONS TO STATE Jim Tarkington broke a 29 year old state record Saturday in the pole vault. He broke the record of 12' 1 1 2 . This was the first state title of any sort ever to be won by a Searcy High School athletic team. The Lions totaled 28 points in the 50 team meet. Pruitt, the Lions' versatile junior, scored 12 1 2 points to win the high point trophy. Pruitt continued unbeaten this year in the 440 yard dash, by winning with a time of 52. 2. He also took his second straight' broad jump title with a jump of 20'11 3 4 . Pruitt and Tarkington personally accounted for 23 of the Lions' 28 points. Hurley Me Moran and Charlie Hill, each running a leg on the 880 and mile relay teams, scored the other five points. The Lions' mile relay team, composed of Hill, Me Moran, Pruitt, and Tarkington, broke the state mile rdlay record by running a 3:31. 2. This relay team ran the fastest mile 3:28. 7 ever recorded by a class A high school in state competition. This year Coach Wendell Langford guided the Lions to victories in the Arkansas relays, Ouachita Relays, and District 2A meets, and second in the Meet of Champs, finishing second to Little Rock Central, the Big 9 State Champions. 10V2” VAULT JUMPS TITLE r Tarkington finishes way ahead to . win in the District meet. Coach Wendell Langford's Searcy Lions added the White County Champion- ship to their list of honors. The Lions won easily by rolling up 70 1 2 points. Hill, Tarkington, Pruitt, and Me Moran, the Lions' relay team, broke all their relay records. Eddie Pruitt edged team- mate Jim Tarkington 16 3 4-14 3 4 for high point honors. Me Moran in the 440, Holmes in the 880, and Sawrie in the mile, helped the team by all three taking second place honors. The Lions' three relay teams, composed of Pruitt, Hill, McMoran, and Tarkington, smashed all district records. Tarkington clears the bar with a winning vault. Eddie Pruitt and Jim Tarkington's brilliant versatility, a nifty 2:09 in the 880 yard run by Jimmy Holmes, plus tremendous depth gave Searcy the District 2A Championship. Pruitt won high point honor with 213 4 points which included a new broad jump record. Jim Tarkington set records in the pole vault and 180 low hurdles.
