FOOTBALL FLASHBACK OF '47 Building for the future was the keynote in 47 . From a -team which won 3, lost 7, and knotted twoy eleven will return next fall to wear the red and black for Searcy. Under new coach, Cecil Kemp, the Lions opened the '47 season by fight- ing to a deadlock with Augusta. Stuttgart fell to a Searcy eleven for the first time in several years. The Birds were ahead until the last few minutes when the Lions won in a thrilling storybook finish. Hoxie was hopelessly outclassed. Searcy made 3 touchdowns in the first half and coasted to beat the Mustangs 26-0. Norphelet gave the Lions their first taste of defeat 20-0. Searcy played well but lost to a fast Newport eleven 27-6. A passing Marianna team edged out the Lions 19-12. Searcy scored first and it was anybody's ball game the full 48 minutes. Homecoming and a combination of bad breaks gave Batesville the edge, 6-0. Walnut Ridge folded after playing Searcy to a 6-6 draw at half-time. The next opposition was in the form of the Marked Tree Indians. The game was much closer than the 19-O score indicated. A big and powerful Conway squad stayed unbeaten as they took the Lions in Hendrix Stadium. Mud and Hulbert West Memphis combined to down the Lions 32-0. Five seniors played their final game at Lonoke in the annual Turkey Day Classic. Searcy led 13-6 at halftime, but after that, things got a bit confused, Lonoke claiming a 13-13 tie. As 1948 rolls on, we look on '47. Sixteen boys received letters and ten reserve letters. Although the record wasn't a success as far as wins and losses are concerned, the team of '47 showed a brand of sportsmanship and deter- mination that will long be remembered.
