During this year Seaman experienced a new student council, a dress code, and a new junior high. For the first time in the school's history, no freshmen attended Seaman. Viking school spirit prevailed through- out the year spurring achievements in athletics, music and debate. It was in this year of change that the shattering news of President Kennedy's assassi- nation was heard. The nation was stunned, but remained united and quick- ly recovered. No matter how exciting or tragic the various memories of this year may be, the day will come when 1964 Seaman students will say, Yes, I remember SHS. Northern Hills Junior High School. THE NEED for scientific knowledge in modern civilization is becoming greater and greater. Without science there would be no progress in lifeg thus, science will always be important in education. Biology, chem- istry, physics, and a newly added modern earth science class provide Seaman students with a well rounded background in this area. Modern earth science furnishes students with facts and ideas from various areas of scientific thought. The advisors, Miss Ward, Mr. Lauffer, and Mr. Frederick, supervise the election meetings, and other activities of the council. Students work to better student-teacher and student- student relationships, to maintain and further develop the name, spirit, and tradition of Seaman High School, to stimulate scholastic achievement, and to provide a forum of student expression. Students elected to the council must possess above-average civic responsi- bility in the home, school and community. Students must also maintain at least a C average in school work since representatives are respected and provide leadership for the entire student body. Representatives to the student advisory council are sophomores--Connie Metz, Bernie Williams, Janice Smith, Larry Gregg, juniors--Sandy Brooks, Ann Lolley, Mike Estes, Russ Robinson, seniors--Susan McKay, Patricia Milliken, George Randall, and Ray Smith. Among the accomplishments of the student advisory council are a new consti- tution and by-laws, a dress code, a successful Winter formal, and student ex- changes with local high schools . THE LAW of averages finally caught up Seaman's football team. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the school's history, the team finished with two wins and seven losses. After coming to Seaman in 1960, coach Mike Hyrnewich took over the head coaching job this season. In his previous two years at Seaman he was assistant coach under coach Bernie Beirman, who is now athletic director . With only three returning lettermen, Seaman battled with the new formation of the T . Playing single wing the past eight years, the Vikes had trouble adjusting to the T formation. With 16 lettermen returning next season, the outlook is very promising. Coach Hyrnewich feels the experience gained this year will be a great asset next season. 68 SEAMAN 0 TOPEKA WEST 19 SEAMAN 6 HAYDEN 25 SEAMAN O HOLTON 6 SEAMAN 0 WASHBURN RURAL 41 SEAMAN 0 ATCHISON 33 SEAMAN 6 LEAVENWORT H 34 SEAMAN 37 SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 34 SEAMAN 0 HIGHLAND PARK 25 SEAMAN 2 WICHITA HEIGHTS 0 Kwon by forfeitj Football coaches - Hoch, Edson, Hrynewich, Carlson Ray Smith struggles for extra yardage Seaman players rush to make the tackle in the Atchison game. 69' First Downs Rushing Yardage Passing Yardage Passes Passes intercepted Punts Fumbles Lost Yards Penaiized Co-Captains, Ray Smith and Tom Logan, talk over some of the old games. yards through the air. 140 67 1228 800 685 708 51-98 42-103 11 6 9-32 28-29 13 7 400 355 The Vikings led the city in passing with 708 N ,. Playing with some of the top teams in the state, Seaman captured fourth place. With a team instilled with hustle and determination, Mr. Carlson labeled his first high school season successful. In the near future, we hope to have courts of our own to practice and play on. This would give us some chance of participating with the other schools on a more nearly equal basis. The season closed with eight boys out. Six will be returning next year.
