Cfau sxlvbjlorg In September of l945, a very timid group of boys and girls entered high school. After much confusion we finally settled down to work with Mr. W. E. Williams as our leader. lt took us sometime to get accustomed to high school, but we learned to like it more and more. Before long we were in step with the other high school students-many of our classmates being chosen to play on the basketball teams. Soon after we had finished our mid-term exams, everyone was shocked by the sudden death of our homeroom teacher, Mr. Williams. Then Mrs. George DeLaughter-took. charge of the class for the remainder of our freshman year. J The summer passed quickly and soon we were back in school again. But not to be looked upon as lowly freshmen, because we had gone a step further and acquired the title sophomore We learned that Mrs. Vellon Craven would direct our class this year. Because of high scholarship and outstanding character, several members of our class received bids to the Beta Club, Basketball letters were awarded to some of the class members before the year was over. Another special event was our trip to Chimney Rock. Since few classes go on trips before their Junior years, we felt that we had acquired something. Everyone worked hard and before anyone realized it school had again come to a close. Juniorsl-and did that sound grown-up. Only one more year of the long climb before we would graduate. Practically all of the high school faculty were new this year, even a new principal. Our class was met by Miss Clarice Hoover, and we started to work right away. The building being crowded, we did not accomplish much at first, but as soon as we were settled in the new building we ordered our class rings. Everyone was so excited we could hardly wait until they came. With the money we earned from the sale of magazines and our Junior play, we entertained the Seniors with a formal banquet at the Community Center in Robbins. This being the first banquet most of us had attended, we were very excited and everyone seemed to have a good time. Since we had enjoyed this year so much, we were very sorry to see it end, but with much effort we passed on to our final year. Because of the polio epidemic, school was delayed this year, and we could hardly wait until September 9th to see our classmates. When the opening did come, we found that many new tasks were placed before us. One of the most important was the editing of the Se-l-li. Under the direc- tion of Miss Margaret Walton, our homeroom teacher, we began our work on it immediately. The publishing of the school paper also fell chiefly upon the Senior Beta members. Most of the boys drove buses and some of the class members were on the basketball team. Our trip to the state fair, Senior play, and Junior- Senior banquet were also opportunities which we all enjoyed. And now, although we have had many good times here, we must journey on in our different ways. But in parting we pause to thank our teachers, parents, and fellow schoolmates, who have, with endless effort, encouraged us on to this great moment. Historian, Lula Mae Bowman 9
