SANTA'S WONDERlAND Ames .gznior lance December 12, 1958 CLASS HISTDRY Whenever two or three of us seniors get together we somehow get around to talking about the four magnifi cent years we have spent together in the hallowtd halls of Seaford High School We the class of 1959 entered the halls of Seaford High School September 9 1955 one hundred and eighteen strong As a class we were a pretty sorry sight A little scared were we but too proud to admit it We learned that our sponsors were to be Miss Berry Miss Vincent Mrs Wright and Mr Miller We chose the following to lead us through our first year in high school Loraine Lewis president Rowland Carey vice president Carol Sapna secretary o Geiger treasurer and Pat Wheeless historian To represent us in the Student Council we chose Loraine Lewis Barbara Bowden oe G iger and memb r of the Athletic Association Even b fore we became accustomed to our new classes we were initiated into the real high school life Will we ever forget the crazy pantaloons of the girls or the hor ribl shock of no make up or hair accessories? The greatest moment in the Freshman year centered around go ng out for the various sports We were well represented in all the sports with seventeen boys on the V football team and five girls on the JV hockey team Basketball too was a great sport Five of our boys played V basketball and four girls were active on the girls team During Easter vacation we ventured to Washington D C on a Civics trip Will we ever stop talking about our frightened boys when a gang of Washington roughians tried to pick a fight? During the course of thc year several new members Joined our class Jeanne Westcott and Barbara Culver Fourteen members of our class left the halls of Sea ford High And thus was our first year in S H S Page 42 The morning of September 6 1956 found us again in the halls of Seaford High School We seemed a bit more sure of ourselves as we were no longer the babies of S H S O ir sponsors for this year were Mrs Wright Mrs Larri more Mr Pauley and Mr Ellis Our officers were Bob Parker president Bob Hastings vice president Rowland Carey secretary Gene Messick treasurer and Mary Light historian The sophomore representative to the Athletic Association was Rowland Carey To air our views in the Student Council we chose Barbara Bowden Loraine Lewis oe Geiger and Bob Parker Our cla.ss flower red carna tion and class colors red and gold were chosen by a few self appointed members of the class Sports were the chief interest in the fall Twelve sophomore gxrls played JV hockey and twenty of our boys aided by six sophomores Thanksgiving night we displayed our first effort as a class in presenting the Sophomore Dance Autumn Leaves Besides having fun decorating we made a little profit The beginning of the basketball season found six sophomore boys playing JV ball and nine girls headed the girls team Again the varsity team received aid from the great sophomore class The biggest moment as a sophomore was the Honor Society assembly during which twenty one of our class mates were made probationary members of the Seaford Chapter of the National Honor Society During the year we welcomed Bob Steele Carolyn Carney and Helen Catts but lost nine members We ended our Sophomore year with a picnic on une September 4 1957 we as Juniors entered Seaford High on the second half of our four years. Seaford scored early in the first quarter, on a short plunge by Row- land Carey. Late in the last quarter Wi-Hi tied the game on a short plunge. The game ended in a 7-7 tie. SEAFORD 19 ANNAPOLIS 0 The Blue Jays won their first game from Annapolis, 19-0. The scoring was divided between Carey, Parker, and Hitch. The Jays offensive powerhouse was too much for the boys from Annapolis. Pane and Wetter were the outstanding linemen of the game. SEAFORD 18 MILFORD 0 The following week Seaford defeated the Buccaneers of Milford by three touchdowns. Quarterback Hink- son tossed a twenty-one yard pass to sophomore Wayne Bell. Bell and Bob Parker finished the scor- ing with short runs from scrimage. SEAFORD 33 CAMBRIDGE 20 The Blue Jays struck fast with five touch downs. Both Parker and Hitch scored two touchdowns each. Coach Dowd cleared the bench during the third straight win. SEAFORD 13 CAESAR RODN EY 13 In the first away game of the season the Blue Jays were the underdogs against an impressive CR team. The team scored quickly and took an early 13-0 lead on a pass from Hinkson to Cool and a gallop by Bob Parker. Caesar Rodney then scored two equally fast TD's, which gave the Blue Jays their third tie of the year. The line play of Marvel, Mears, and Allen was exceptional. SEAFORD 13 LEWES I3 Seaford traveled to Lewes on November 13, 1958, to play a heavier Lewes team. In the first quarter Hink- son threw a pass to Gib Cool for the first score. Rowland Carey, senior fullback, scored the six-pointer on a ten yard run. But for the third time Seaford was tied by another team. SEAFORD 12 DELMAR 13 The Blue Jays suffered their first defeat from the hands of Delmar. Over-confidence was the main fac- tor for defeat. The scoring was done by Rowland Carey on a seventy yard kickoff return and a twenty yard scamper by Parker. SEAFORD 13 LAUREL 14 The traditional Thanksgiving game was a moral victory for the Seaford Blue Jays, since the Bulldogs were a two touchdown favorite. The first half was dominated by Laurel when they scored two quick tallies on bad passes from center. However, in the second half Seaford's passing attack began to click. Quarterback Hinkson hit sixteen of twenty-four passes and Parker's running game was extraordinary. Hinkson scored first on a one yard sneak and Bell ran twenty-eight around end for the second score. Although.Seaford lost the game, they played their best game of the season and everyone knew it. Leroy Pane was the recipient of the good sportsmanship trophy. The Varsity Hockey team is greatly indebted to their Coach, Mrs. Charlotte Trader, for guiding them through another undefeated season, which is the second in the history of Seaford High School. There were many exciting moments in every game. The memory of the good sportsmanship, teamwork, and the great determination to win on the part of the Varsity will not be forgotten. Page 112 . . . Team play and individual stick work improved with every game. Under the capable leadership of co-captains Mary jane Geiger and janet Adams they finished a successful season of four wins, one tie, and one loss which certainly shows great possibilities fos a fine team next year.
