KOELKER :becbcafion The Senior Class would like to express its appreciation to a teacher whose constant striving and tireless work made the past four years at Seaford High School memorable 01185. It is with pride and fondness that we, the Class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook to MR. RAYMOND B. Who can predict the changes this will bring in education, in vocational opportunities, and in day-to-day' living. Already pressure mounts for schools and colleges to turn out more scientists and mathematicians. As important as this is, we are sometimes prone to forget that we need good people in other professions and all unsolved problems aren't a matter of mathematical formulae and laboratory test tubes. Despite all our scientific advances, we have somehow neglected the very important matter of how we get along with others as individuals and as nations. Through the years as you glance through this book and perchance read these words, aslt yourself if there isn't some lasting significance here. How much richer would your life have been if practical solutions could be found to the problems of our complex life so that man might follow the philosophy of peace on earth, good will toward men. Kenmflla C. Madden Superinlendenl of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION-First row, left to right Robert H Stamm I Benson Allen, Irene F. Larrimore. Second row: Kenneth C Madden, Cecil B Tull The somewhat carefree days of your high school life have passed, and now a demanding future lies ahead awaiting your talents. You will find, I am sure, that the training you have received at Seaford High School, combined with determination and hard work on your part, will lead you to the top. Whatever you aspire to be-scientist, teacher, bricklayer, dishwasher-be the best. That is the measure of success. It has been a pleasure knowing all of you and having played a small part in your education. john W. Royal Administrative Assis tant Page 6 This has been a momentous year in the lives of all Americans. We have experienced the dismay of being out-distanced in a field in which we have always considered ourselves supreme. Some people have tried to find a scape- goat for the position in which we have found ourselves. Malreshift suggestions for improving the mathematical and scientific offerings in our schools were volunteered by many. Some of these suggestions intimated that scientific subjects should be advanced at the expense of our other offerings. We do need to review and revise all our subjects, but, at this time when the art of destruction has reached new heights, we should not abandon those arts which might produce world peace. E. I. I would like to congratulate and commend the class of 1958. Your splendid co-operation, interest, and enthusiasm have been greatly appreciated by me. We did a lor of work, but yet had our fun, in taking tests, making applications, selecting colleges or vocations, and'the numerous other things necessary for you to take the next step toward higher achievement. Your ambitions and ideals have been high and you will be awarded a place of distinction in the school history. We do not want this record to end here. As the respective members of the class take separate roads in pursuing careers, I am sure the same level of accomplishments will be maintained. My best wishes go with you. james B. I1 1 dll Cfaa In September of 1954, we the class of 1958, won- dering what the future held, entered Seaford High School as green little Freshmen. We learned that our class sponsors were Miss Vincent, Mrs. Wright, Miss Berry, and Mr. Miller. When entering good old S.H.S. in 1954, we numbered one hundred and nine- teen strong, and now, in 1958, we will leave the Halls of Ivy with-brave souls, who lasted for twelve whole years! As Freshmen we lost Jere McNeilly and Nancy Adams, but we gained back, Pat Johnson. As Freshmen we were looked down upon by the upper-classmen, in addition, we were initiated, as are most Frosh. Such was our entrance into the four most important years of our school life. At our first class meeting, we elected the officers of our class. They were Mike McLaughlin, President, Judy Trimm, Vice-President, and Connie Crock- ett, Sandra Fleetwood, and Ronnie Hastings were our Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian respectively. Rep- resenting us in the Student Council were Buddy Hol- lis, Joyce Pepper, Pat Patterson, and Gene johnson. Ronnie Hastings was our representative on the Ath- asv ,Ma for? letic Council for our Freshman year. Returning to school in the autumn of 1955, we were only too eager to begin a new school year??? Our class officers were Mike McLaughlin, President, George Bell, Vice-President, Charlotte Fleetwood, Secretary, Marianna Sherman, Treasurer, and Ronnie Hastings, Historian. Our class sponsors were Miss Steele, Mrs. jones, Mr. Ellis, and Mr. O'Day. During our Sophomore year, Beverly Barkman, Charlotte Fleetwood, and Lynda Prillhart moved to different towns, yet, we gained Madelyn Meding and Tom Pauley. Our Student Council Representatives were Joyce Pepper, Budd Hollis, Gene Johnson, and Wes- ner Stack. Our Class sponsored its first dance in November, 1955. The theme was Harvest Moon Ball. To our shock, it turned out to be great fun, even though we had only a small profit. Another big event in our Sophomore year was the receiving of our class rings, and then, in June, we received what we really had been waiting for-a three months' vacation! A R 2 When September, 1956 rolled around, we again re- turned to Seaford High. This year our class chose Mike McLaughlin to be our President. Gene Johnson was elected Vice-President, Marianna Sherman, Sec- retary, Joan Cordrey, Treasurer, and Ronnie Hastings, Historian. Representing us in the Student Council were Joyce Pepper, Marianna Sherman, Gene John- son, and Wesner Stack. Our sponsors were Miss Berry, Mr. MaClay, Mr. Koelker, and Mr. O'Day. During this year, Judy Trimm and Carol Baker moved away, but we gained Ruth Gillis, Jeanne Blades, Mickey Morris, Asenath Seipp, and Beverly Hoagland. Wes- ner Stack and Gene Johnson represented us at Boys' State in March. This year was a successful year for us. We held our Class Bake and netted approximately 3880. Then we presented for our Junior Class Play, We Shook The Family Tree,' a riotous comedy. The highlight of the year was our Junior Prom given for the Class of 1957. The theme was Oriental Paradise, and it was well worth the work we put into it. During the sum- mer Marianna Sherman and Evelyn Lofland attended Girls' State. Kay Ellis went to France with the American Field Service Program. In September, 1957, we the Class of 1958, en- tered old S.H.S. for the last time. We welcomed Sue Cattoretti, our exchange student from Italy. Finally we were the illustrious Seniors, looked upon by un- derclassmen as idols, and looked upon by our teachers as idiots. Elected to lead us in this all important year of our high school career were the following: Presi- dent, Wesner Stack, Vice-President, Evelyn Loflandg Secretary, Madelyn Medingg Treasurer, Joan Cordreyg and Historian, Irvin Handy. Our capable, hard-work- ing sponsors were Mr. MaClay, Mr. Arnold, Cwho was a new faculty memberj, Mr. Wheatley, and Mrs. Elzey. Representing us in the Student Council were Mike McLaughlin, Marianna Sherman, Joyce Pepper, Pat Patterson, and Evelyn Lofland. , All of the things we did as Seniors we did in a big way. Our Senior Bake brought us 3743. With this amount we broke all previous records for a Sen- ior Class Bake. With part of this money, we presented our Senior Christmas Dance, Christmas Dream, which was a most delightful affair. 1-at ' Moi The Senior Class Play, The Robe, was presented on December 6th and Sth. Being the first class play to run two nights, The Robe, was a most out- standing play. Mr. Arnold, our faculty director, went all out for it, and was well assisted by the entire class. Concerning the play, Dr. Madden writes, Dear Mr. Arnold: I would like to offer my congratulations to you and the members of the cast for the splendid production which you presented this past week. The members of the senior class have set a goal for our future classes to reach, and I believe that this is probably the most significant production we have ever had presented in Seaford. In trying to give credit to everyone, it is a difficult task, for everyone did a very fine job. The scenery, the costuming, the make-up, and the staging are as equally deserving of credit as the performers them- selves. I did not forget either the business manager in selling tickets for two performances which has never been accomplished before. Never have we been able to involve as many people in a production of this kind and this is worthy of special comment in itself. I know this play will stand out as one of the high lights of high school life for all members of the class of 1958. Our Senior Class play was the most successful thing we tried during our entire high school years, and it drew our class closer together. On February 15, a Valentine party was held for our class at the Country Club. This memorable event was given by our parents to whom we are very thankful. During the same month, Evelyn Lofland came in second in the State DAR Contest. Suzie Wilkinson was chosen local Betty Crocker Homemaker. In May we had our Final Awards Assembly and, of course, the final exams. Next came Senior Week. During this week, we went on our annual Class Pic- nic, and also we practiced for Baccalaureate and Commencement Services. Our class had come a long way in four years, and then at last Commencement Dayhlune 10, 1958, arrived! Many of us received our diplomas with a tear in our eye, for we were leaving our friends to go out into the cold, cruel world, never again to be a part of S.H.S. But we know that S.H.S. will always be a part of us, and many times in the years to come, our memories will carry us back to Seaford High School, our immortal Alma Mater. Miss Betty Lou Small was the director, and Marianna Sherman was the student director. Hildegarde Dolson, portrayed by Carol Baker, was a slim blond girl of sixteen or seventeen. Mrs. Dolson, her mother, was played by Suzie Wilkinson. Mike McLaughlin played Mr. Dolson, the father. Hilde- garde's sister, Sally, was played by Billie Hartman. Bob and jimmy, Hildegarde's two brothers, who were portrayed by Bill Blair and jimmy Litchford re- spectively, were often in cahoots when mischief was afoot. ' Paige, played by Joyce Pepper, was a little girl ap- proximately six years old, who lived down the street and liked to play postman. Sandra Fleetwood por- trayed Ellie May, an attractive girl of Bob's age. jill, played by Kay Ellis, was slightly younger and Ellie May's faithful satellite. Freddie, who was Hilde- garde's age, was played by Ronnie Hastings. His mother, who, made him wear knickers, was played by Dottie Fleetwood, and Jon Griffith played Mr. Shermer, Freddie's father. After a successful production the cast enjoyed a party given by Carol Baker and Betty Lee Hall at the Parish House. Page l9 T1 Q 9' .. ,.,, .,.,A A 'g ig . Y V. R xx x' L ' A' if A L 'f V5-,T? The beautifully decorated gymnasium was entered at 9 p.m. and was filled with fun and enjoyment until one a.m. when everyone departed to attend after-prom parties. Cfaaa ,alted The class of '58 held their Junior Class Bake on April 13, 1957. lThe headquarters were locted in Thomas foung's Store on Wallets Hill. Stands wer M situated at three strategic points, Manning, Pharmacy, The Acme Store, and the A8zP,iwhich was newly located on Stein Highwayj The Juniors were swa ped with bake goods and began selling t em at 9:00 a.m. Quite a bit of money was .rought in before hand and Elsie Comorat liept the accounts in order. Even with the evbnt of snow early that morning, the class was able to make 3890. i X Once again the class of '58 held a bake, the annual Senior Bake. It was held Novem- ber 2, 1957, and naturally it rained-mildly speaking. The co-chairmen were Kay Ellis and Mike McLaughlin, who found St. Luke's Parish House very able headquarters. The class representatives headed the stands which, as before, were located at Manning's, The Acme, and the A8cP. Debby Rodney took care of seeing, by the use of posters, that the public knew of the sale. Before and bake goods were sold, over S200 had been collected, and at the end the Seniors had made a much needed 3743, a record for Senior Bakes. 7 9 t haf' If x 2 i i Q 1 .Lili Qs.-.aria .... Ni. Coach Bobby Dowd was absent, but he was there in spirit. The assistant coach Joe Fulghum took charge. Carey knifed off tackle from the one yard mark, following McLaughlin's 57 yard run, to score the first touchdown. Reese Parker plunged across from the two yard distance to score the second touchdown. In the third quarter Parker legged it off tackle five yards for his second touchdown of the night. Carey made all three placements, and Wetter made a safety. The Sea- ford's forward wall, lightning fast, broke up every advance the tribe attempted. SEAFORD 34 MILFORD 32 The Blue Jays struck fast with five touchdowns to take a 34-13 edge at half time. The re- serves could not hold back the Buccaneers from free scoring during the second half. Both Mc- Laughlin and R. Parker made two touchdowns, Parker with nine and four yard runs, and Mc- Laughlin with a 55 yard punt return and an 80 yard pass interception. Carey ran 35 yards to score another touchdown. He kicked three points while McLaughlin rushed over for the other. SEAFORD 27 CAMBRIDGE 6 The Blue Jays continued their undefeated flight by thumping Cambridge 27-6. Coach Dowd played an effective aerial attack. Three of the touchdowns resulted from passes. R. Parker carried over two of the scores, McLaughlin and Lank contributed one apiece. Carey made two extra points and Hitch, one. This costly victory involved a broken leg for Robert Rice and a fractured arm for Hastings. Handy was moved to the end position. . -au? .fu f 4w z? ' -a 4.- L Q ,fo ffw' I -1- at .. vu, .9 SEAFORD 7 CAESAR RODNEY 6 The Seaford High Blue Jays refused to be beaten when they conquered Caesar Rodney 7-6. Carey gallantly led the team to victory in the Battle of the Unbeaten, by plunging across the two yard mark, and then booting the extra point. The defensive play of tackle, Pane, and Handy, linebacker, was also noteworthy, SEAFORD 12 LEWES 0 The Blue Jays extended their undefeated flight to five straight with a 12 to 0 win over the Lewes High Pirates. Gib Cool made a first quarter touchdown with a 25 yard pass from Mc- Laughlin. In the third stanza McLaughlin got loose for a 12 yard run to register the second touchdown. Carey was a standout, both offensively and defensively. Handy's game also was creditable. SEAFORD DELMAR The scheduled gmae with Delmar was cancelled because the Delmar school board refused permission for its team to play two games in one week. The scheduled date was rained out. SEAFORD 0 LAUREL 13 A Thanksgiving Day gathering of 2,500 rain-drenched fans saw the Laurel Bulldogs romp to victory. The Blue Jays presented a serious threat late in the final period when Rowland Carey drove to the Bulldogs' threeg however, a five-yard penalty wiped out the Blue Jay's hopes. Both teams played an excellent game, but unfortunately it was Laurel's day. - ,.a Q, ' n . x -sv L .g.f' . , -Q -,. ' .- ',4av -if - -I - Q7 .F f 4 0 -.. 77gjQrf3'3 3f!'Q .
