The first American business in the Philippines was established in 1825, beginning a growing U,S, interest in the Archipelago that culminated in annexation after the Spanish-American War. American plans for Philippine Independence were interrupted by World War II but in 1946 the Philippines became an in- dependent Republic with Manila as its seat of government. Although Tagalog is the of- ficial language, Englishis spoken by most Filipinos, with a small number still speaking Spanish.
