For thirty nine years her pet phrases You oaf and That ceased to be funny a long time go have echoed through the halls of our school. Her squeals of joy and enthusiastic kisses at recognizing returning alumni are cherished by two generations. Familar is the sight of her trek to the library with unsuspecting juniors, following like lambs to the slaughter, where they are greeted by Do you possibly have a book simple enough for this idiot?', And who can forget her book reports written on little scraps of paper and on comple- tion ripped in two with great gusto? Mrs. McConnell has taught people love and understanding of poetry, to read good books, and to know grammar. Her unfailing sense of humor, her innate kindness, her sincere ability to forgive and forget have made her loved and have earned for her the accolade of a former principal, She is an inspired and inspiring teacherf' Through The Years 10 F N . . , - X Cf, T- ff -1 ,- -1 f . 1 f- 4 f. ,. -, ---., -.5 i. fmurswslamv- 1 f -hi .I ' 1 , ' 'D ff :S EDITOR Jerry Stewart ASSISTANT EDITOR - Albert Goodrich, Sherry Askren Lynn Chidsey Janice Easterling David Smith SPONSOR - Mr. Roger Wagner BUSINESS MANAGER Ioe Pace Margie Emmons Pam Fox Eileen Hoffmeister Posy Linscott Jr .NV .. ,WM ,,.,.ff.ffm-t . nz-sms X' ., f w2-f: - ,1.fL, MR. This makes the position of Director of Student Activi- ties an enviable one, for my work is more that of an ad- visor than a director. It is in- deed a pleasure to be in a position in which one has such pleasant contacts with youth, especially the youth of Sea- breeze. Mrs. Daphin Marshall 34 Our DIRECTOR of ACTIVITIES Senate in Action Courtroom Drama Inter - Club Council Officers LEFT TO RIGHT: Linda Oates, Phil Chanfrau, Ian Dunn, Larry Gonzalez, Sue Stedman 36 QFIRST SEMESTER Student Government Association Daytona's famed beach would never be well-known and loved without the organization behind it. Our Stu- dent Covemment Association is the same. Our president is the chosen head of our S.G.A. He is captain of the S.P.'s, President of the Inter-Club- Council, and in charge of student body activities. The vice-president presides over the Senate and conducts assembly every other week. Our treasurer handles our financial transactions and the bookstore. The secretary records the senate minutes and handles all correspond- ence. LARRY CONZALES, President S E N A T E SENATE COURT Any object of beauty or worth, such as the beach, must have a system of organization and laws. For the first time in many vears Seabreeze now has two senators from each grade. Elected by their respective class, for a semester, they pass the mles under which we live. In addition to the senate we have a court pre- sided over by our judge. It enforces our school policies and makes certain everyone has a fair chance. C 0 U R T 37 STUDENT POLICE Iust as the beach needs dedicated policemen to enforce its laws and pre- serve its beauty, so does our new school need student police to help promote law and order and to keep it ever beautiful. 38 l-1 -it ELCOME AND GUIDANCE Alan Hager and Lynn Brumby An Overdone Welcome Because of the great influx of families to our community, and therefore new students to our school, a committee has been organized with the express purpose of making these people feel welcome by guiding them thru the ropes of our S.G.A. Linda Oates, Diane Morris Y Y 7 - Q s l E Q S - LINDA OATES, Treasurer The very pearl of our S.G.A. is its treasurer. Not only does she have to keep track of S.G.A. expenditures, she also must run the bookstore. Chosen this year by our present treasurer, Linda, Diane is learning how to run it smoothly. 43 BOYS' STATE Our Boys' State representatives this year, Larry Comales, Charlie Cobb, Bob Hardt, and Cary Peterson could not have made us prouder. They showed our fine qualities of leadership, and did a tremendous job of representing our school. It was the first year one of our boys was elected to state office. Larrv is now sewing a yearis term on The State Cabinet. Charlie and Gary were elected to Congress, and Bob made many good proposals. The best way to learn about the workings of our goverrmnent is through experience. Such experience has proven profitable, as is evidenced by the yearly as- semblage of girls from all over the state. At this time the girls hold mock elections for various civil offices, staging campaigns much the same as in actual politics. Our delegate, this year, was Sally Hearon. 44 LARRY GONZALEZ BOB HARDT CHARLES COBB GARY PETERSON GIRLS' STATE SALLY HEARON The beautiful colors of life are paraded before us in the sea and its inhabitants. These tests determine eligi- bility for scholarships toward a col- lege education. The results are announced the following year when the students are seniors in high school. These results are classified in two divisions: Finalists and Let- ter of Commendation. We at Sea- breeze are proud of the fact that we had students in each division. SENIOR HO OR SOCIETY These students are chosen for their academic ability as our lifeguards are chosen for their swimming talents. The students must maintain a 3.5 scholastic average and a 2.5 citizen- ship average. His name is Coach Nelson. Battered by students, he yearly is our unfaltering rock upon which our Waves of athletes crash. He schedu- ules our activities, keeps track of eli- gibility records, and purchases neces- sary athletic equipment. This man's insight and foresight have created a Well-balanced athletic program and well-loved director. OUR COACHING STAFF These people, dedicated to athlet- ics, physical fitness and sportsman- ship, compose a coaching staff of which all at Seabreeze are proud. Fine teams and records are achieved through their perseverence, knowl- edge, and ability-all well-applied. FIRST ROVV: Coaches, Mr. Simmons, Mr. Surrctte, Mr. Jennings. SECOND ROW: Coaches, Mr. Chandler, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Stewart, Mr. Nelson, Mr. Hogan. 'QATHLETIC HISTORY For the last five years, Seabreeze has been the home of some of Florida,s finest athletes. The first thing a Sandcrab thinks of concerning sports is the football team with an outstanding five- year record of 38-10-3. Since 1958, S.H.S. has con- tributed seven All-State and five All-American players, and the Sandcrabs have been with the Beach Bowl since its start in 1960. Coaches Iack Surrette and Ierry Chandler began here in 1960. Since then, the Seabreeze basketeers have made records well Worth bragging about. Being Florida State Champs highlited the 60-61 season record of 27-2. One of the major spring sports is Track, under the supervision of Coach Simmons. A total of seven records have been broken in only three years. Although we placed second in the County Meet and Beach Relays in 1959, we moved up to first in the Beach Relays in 1960 and came in second in the Black Knight Relays. In 1961 Coach Chandler was put in charge of the hitherto unorganized golf team. That year we won 8 and lost 1, and placed twelfth in the state. We placed seventh in the State Tourney and had an 11-1 record in 1962. Under the supervision of Mrs. Gail Stewart, the girls, tennis team has taken the State crown three times in the last five years and were runnersup one year, last year the boys, team came in second in the State Tourney, the first time in the history of the team that we ever placed. In 1957, the girls, swimming team took second place in the freestyle relay at State. Although our baseball teams have not yet won any awards, we of Seabreeze are proud of Coach Dunlop,s fine efforts. 85 OUR FOOTBALL COACHES Aiding Coach Hogan in keeping up his good humor is Assistant Football Coach Jim Simmons. Known throughout the school for his now- healed ulcers he has become one of the most oft'-quoted teachers at ye ol, alma mater , Sea- breeze. Shrieks of sil'ly', and K'I'm gonna scar you , will forever echo through our halls thanks to this well-loved man. 86 COACH HOGAN COACH SIMMONS Sparkling blue Irish eyes often turn to dark blue storm clouds accompanied by a smirk and a not so joyous bellow. This man has led us to such a victorious season? Why of course! He is none other than head football coach Fred Hogan, who with his wit, charm, and understanding has triumphantly led us on to one triumph after another on the gridiron. We of Seabreeze say, Thanks for it all, Coachlv THE FOOTBALL SEASON AT A GLANCE SEPTEMBER 21, 1962-LEESBURG This was our season opener and the mighty Sand- crabs were off to a great start. The tremendous running of Charlie Cobb and joy Deen coupled with the fine blocking of Livingston, Archer, and Erickson sparked the Crabs to a 13-6 victory. SEPAEMBER 28, 1962 FLORIDA-TALLAHASSEE A journey to the capital city proved a hard fight which ended in a 6-6 tie. Hurt by numerous penalties and a nullified touchdown, we were able to cross the goal only once. OCTOBER 5, 1962-PALATKA Traditionally one of our hardest battles, our Sand- crabs were held to a slim 7-0 Win over the Maroons. Dick YVade came through with unusual punting ability and, in 6 boots, averaged 37 34 yards. Ioy Deen came through with our one touchdown to make it a game long to be remembered. OCTOBER 12, 1962-SANFORD In one of the toughest games of the season and a real heartbreaker, our Crabs lost by a single point to Sanford. They played a great game and it was just fate that we were not victorious. OCTOBER 19, 1962-ST. AUGUSTINE Our yearly battle with the ancient city ended with sweet revenge for the Sandcrabs after last year's tie. Highlights of the game were the outstanding defensive plays of Cary Weber and Billy Sizemore and the fleet running of Ioy Deen and Ricky Nelson. OCTOBER 26. 1962-LAKE CITY Our first trip to this city is a pleasant memory to all Sandcrab fans. The hustling qualities of Joy Deen and our pass combination Tom Lager and Fred Nich- ols, spurred us on to a 25-19 comeback victory. NOVEMBER 1, 1962-DELAND An unusually tough fight between the two Vo- lusia archrivals, Deland and Seabreeze. became an easy victory for our mighty Sandcrabs. A beautiful pass in- terception by Bill Archer and two touchdowns by ace halfback Charlie Cobb gave us our fifth victory, NOCEMBER 17, 1962-OAK RIDGE CHOMECOMINGQ The night was Seabreeze's from the sounding of the whistle to the last countdown ending a wonderful game. Touchdowns by Charlie Cobb and Tommy Lager, aided by Gary Weber's sparkling defense, gave Sea- breeze a decisive 21-6 win over Oak Ridge. NOVEMBER 21, 1962-NEW SMYRNA Our hard hitting Sandcrabs shut out our age old rivals, the ,Cudas, 19-0, in our season's closer. The only dim spot of the evening came in the 2nd quarter with the loss of Charlie Cobb. Steve Buckholt and Torn Lag- er did the honors at the goal line to wind up a great season. NOVEMBER 30, 1962-LIVE OAK QBEACH BOWLD Crippled by the loss of halfbacks joy Deen and Charlie Cobb, our Crabs were kept scoreless through four agonizing quarters. The Sandcrabs were powerless as undefeated Live Oak romped to a 30-0 victory. 87 VARSITY pf' we Bobby Becker Iim Cook Sonny Fussell Charles Rizzo QCaptainj R' .Khin Bill Sizemore Kikki Gresham Bob Stewart Charles Erickson I fu 'Qhnllrft Sill Bill Archer Steve Buckholt jim Owen Jim Gibson lfoofillflleman FIGHTING LETTERMEN Charlie Cobb fCaptainj Tom Lager Gary Weber Dick Wade Richard Brand Iohn Delk Dick Livingston Richard Hawes Rickey Nelson Bill Chanfrau Fred Nichols R .., Ioy Deen cs ' ' SANDCRABS flilillllsfn ff' Wfhe Backfield ff 0 R FIGHTI G L. A M p if , F251 2'-' SENIOR CLASS ANCHOR CLUB HI-Y CLUB HOMECOMING '62 It was going to be a long afternoon and evening for the band, and they were saving the big, brassy happy notes for the devoted who lined the curbs. Up South Peninsula they gave it the quick step, with the drummers banging out the beat. No one heard the tweet', of the copis whistle when he held up the traffic under the light on Main Street and everything turned right. The brass section cut loose and the bass drums exploded. It was a tight turn at Grandview for the floats, but worth the effort, because the Iunior High set were in full cry waiting in front of the old school, and you could tell they were impressed with the great sound and color and maybe they dreamed a private little dream of to- morrow and next year. A snappy left turn on Seabreeze Boulevard, and the floats were glistening in the sharp sun. Some old folks moved off the porch of the hotel and joined old folks who vacated the matinee sesion in the auction house. They loved it-those old folks-and they waved the cautious wave of old people, and the back of a waving hand passed secretly over a wrinkled cheek and caught a'rheumy tear. A sign on one of the floats promised the Sandcrabs would flatten the athletes from Oak Ridge, and by some crazy happenstance the menu stuck in the window of the Chinese restaurant listed the day's special as boiled crab with hot sauce. Across the bridge they marched, and students fell in line at the end of the parade. One of the fishermen on the catwalks had been King Charlie and Queen Judy lucky that day, and held up a string of adrumfishf' The drum section gave him the old rat-a-tat-tat and a collective smile. Down Beach Street, and on to City Island, and the marchers were glad to get off the concrete. Out at the stadium that night it was all lights and sound, and the convertibles flashed and glittered. The Queen's court joined the Queen and King, and Miss Judy was a lovely Queen. King Charley had plaved a tough first half, and to tell the truth he looked like a King who,d been busy quieting a revolution outside the palace gates. A little later he helped put down a minor revolu- tion bv the men of Oak Ridge, but not until the old grads lived through a thrill or two up in the grand- stands. The Sandcrabs wrapped up a 20-6 homecoming present for the old grads, and that's as it should be, for old grads forget the games lost and remember the wins. It was a long day, and some of the memories were long, long memories. Later on at the homecoming dance an old memory came into focus for a young old grad and his young wife. See that pretty cheerleader? asked the pretty young wife of the young old grad. Yes, I see herf' Her face is familiar, said the young wife. It should be familiar, said the young old grad. When we were in Seabreeze you were baby sitting for herf' It was a long day. A long day and a very good day. Phil de Beaubien Daytona Beach News-Journal s X xx W M5 X ,4 K V . M , X 1 . WY. a,, x . With its gorgeous Christ- mas tree, the many-colored lights, the tinsel, the holly, the beautifully dressed girls, and the handsome, formally dressed boys, it was a joy for all who attended. The distant Oklahoma territory of the late 1890's, with all its colorful characters came alive for us when the Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. Heft gave its annual production. Our own pretty Laurie fRosanne Andersonj and handsome Curly fLarry Conzalezj, brought the famous love story to our stage. And They Were Chosen To Direct The Sophomore Class Our sophomores, making up the littlest fish in the ocean otherwise known as Seabreeze, proved their ability to do more than their share. Still, the youngest, now that we no longer have the freshmen, our sophomores did more than their part on such things as the landscaping project, club activities, and the Sweet- heart Swing. Eagerly they look forward to next year and their chance to guide Seabreeze through their increased privileges. l95 Sue Adams Penny Albee Gloria Anderson Kevin Anderson Mike Babic Pat Baine Neena Barber Betty Barker Sara Barker Judy Barnes Dana Barres Bill Beck Carol Bell Paul Beckwith Pat Best Pat Beville Judy Bolling Candy Borthwick Alan Brinkerhoff Bit Boales Wink Bolding Bill Brachold Marshall Bradley Sandra Bragg Claudia Breeden A.
