In just a few minutes Scudder's 1943 crop of successful women will make their entry for their annual reunion. Ten years have passed since that momentous day when these young women stepped forth into an unsuspecting world. A long and smooth Packard pulls to a stop, and as the chauffeur opens the door, we see the fashionable Mrs. Iames Astor, the former Patty Maa'a'en who, you know, married that young soldier that MacArthur personally decorated in World War II. Kathy Purcell is close behind, as she acts as Mrs. Astor's secretary and succeeds in keeping all details in order. Yes, that is our lean Murphy coming up the street with the Commander. We remember when he was just an Ensign. And that station wagon with the two cocker spaniels in it belongs to Midge McSwecney. She finally located her farm, that we discussed over so many sandwiches and cokes, in Connecticut. What is that commotion? Elaine Trosello, laughing as usual. We're lucky to have Elaine with us, you know, for following her basketball player husband keeps her pretty well occupied. Here comes Ruth Scholl, her blond feather cut still looking so trim. Now she is the owner of a string of winning horses, and her polo ponies are famous through- out the country. With her is Betty Brown. They both have a marvelous tan acquired in Texas at the Rodeo last month. As we drift to our tables, we spy Mary Lou Rowe and Mary Kell attentively listening to Neysa Norris' blues song. We knew that with a name like Neysa's, she had to stand out. We enter the lounge and whom do we spy but Darthea Bacon. She has become the first woman editor of Time Magazine. She and Irene Prork fshe has just re- turned from Washington where she is secretary to F.D.R. in his fifth term, make a smart pair of business women as they greet Rath Zoll and lane: Mayer. Patricia fPatj Hughes and Gail Willis have just blown in amid gales of laughter. You know Gail has just made a fortune from her new book My Life Among the Quakers. Golly, how many of those familiar pins are nowhere in sight. Seems Midge Epstein traded her Princeton pin for a diamond, and Colleen Mahoney has forsaken her Dartmouth pin for that band of gold, as has also lean Kleine. Eileen Edwards, as dashing as ever with her lovely strawberry blond locks and Chinchilla coat, has taken the afternoon off from her fascinating position as buyer at Saks Fifth Avenue. Madam Morgenbuilt, alias Carolyn Robertson, is here too. Tempus fugit. Who would think to look around that these charming ladies once slopped around in saddle shoes. OOOOOHHHH, I almost forgot-the former Dean Kimber didn't allow them. We wore the customary campus brogues instead and the -sweater and skirt were very much the fashion then. UGH!-Imagine wearing those outfits today. Marian Drake, a decade ago voted the girl most likely to succeed, is here and much interested in the sudden jump of Dean Scouten. Dean Scoaten was just a SECRETARY when we all hit the road in '43, Miss Dralqe has a position with Pan American Airways in the Spanish division, please. Peekskill Here We Come-so it goes with Katie Rose. Katie was art editor of the KEY, our yearbook of yesteryear. She now holds the position of illustrator for that famous men's magazine Esquire Miss Allen just arrived. Can't stay but a minute as she is due for rehearsals with Phil Spitalny's all-girl orchestra, currently appearing at the Wedgewood Room of the Waldorf-Astoria. The former Rita Avansino is here with Italia Miraglia. Could it be that Rita's six Marine pins of the last war turned into six little WHAMS? Could be . . . Miss Miraglia is Richard I-Iudnut's No. l Dream of perfect skin. She is now demon- strating her techniques at the Fifth Avenue Salon. Florence Goodman, we were surprised to learn, is Bob Hope's new script writer. That comes from all her ad libbing in Scudder. Ieanne Hammann just recently won the title of World Champion for fancy skating. Here come Virginia Eclghardt and Dorothy Galla too. It seems that these two prominent members of Scudder's class of '43 are doing a twin act on roller skates that has won them fame from coast to coast. My! doesn't Alice McLaughlin look keen in the WAVE uniform. She is a captain in charge of the base at Bar Harbor. Maine. Good to be back there is all Alice's eyes show. Petite Scotty comes in on her Ansonias. Those orchids she is wearing are a gift from her flyer husband. The President of the SWAMS Qsweethearts, wives and mothersj has just arrived in the person of Marjorie Ettinger. The SWAMS were such a success during the war that they have kept themselves socially in existence. Who's that with the suit case? Why, it's Betty Keehner and she's going to Patchogue for the weekend to see that VMI man. Here comes Ethel Schwartz, back from her second honeymoon. She took her First one during those good old days at Scudder, and startled the not-so-lucky part of her class. See the successful group at that table? That's Mary Elizabeth Anderson, owner of the famous Fifth Avenue Salon and Audrey Carey who has just published her book On How to Reduce. Ioan Condon, in that luscious purple ensemble, is the proprietor of the chain of Condon Bowling Alleys, and Evelyn Hauser is singing at the Metropolitan in Carmen. Betty Hill has just come back from Australia where she accompanied General MacArthur in his Good Will tour. Katherine Moore and Isabel Ludeman are with her. Ann Kuntz and Lola Orlandi are breathless from their trip to Iapan, where they are connected with the Reconstruction of Tokio. Yes, that's Ioyee Hagen, the wife of the Cheford Auto Magnet, with Roslyn Goldberg, who is appearing at the St. Regis this week. Claire Campbell, who married the flyer and inventor of the combination auto- plane, is stopping to talk with the successful playwright, Aina Bengtson. Pat Malugani steps gracefully from that sleek, blue convertible to greet Pat Cole, who is head of New York's Red Cross, and Vernette lolznson, who married the pro- fessional football player. Do you see the stunning picture Mary Louise Bayer makes? Did you know she's the mother of triplets? Bunny Bell is with her. Bunny has recently been to Alaska. You know the life of a Marine OHicer's wife. As the taxi pulls to the curb, Frances Pauzano, Gloria Alfano, and Ellen DiCroee get out to enjoy themselves at the Hawk Club. Charlotte Anderson and Rosemary Weist meet them at the door. Frances Andrews, the celebrated portrait painter, has just arrived with her favorite models, Sigrid Carlson and Irene Hess. And so we must take leave of the group as Dean Seouten toasts the continued success of the class. School closed early every now and then on account of the fuel shortage. Stockings were abandoned in favor of socks Cnylon went into parachutesj. Remember the cotton stockings we wore, and Midge Epsteitfs colored varieties? No Christmas Ball. Alas! The chief topic of conversation was MEN in general, liances in particular, and husbands in the future. Wings took the place of fraternity pins. Mail suddenly became a vital part of existence. Peaches and cream complexions were out fno creamlj. We were introduced to Ration Books 1, 2, and 33 also Gas Coupons A, B, and C. Not only the service men saw the world. President Roosevelt went to Africa. No more Veronica Lake hair-do's in factories, girls. One long lock caught in an engine could cause a lot of commotion in Alaska, Africa, or Guadalcanal. We debated hard and furiously which type of shoe to buy with our number 17 coupon. Who can forget the way we rushed to class to get our favorite typewriter after the government took our best Remingtons. We all got our figures back when the butter shortage hit us.
