Father Wayne spent much time and effort in preparation for the event, and he should be commended for a job well done. The activities of the day ranged from playing mailcall to celebrating mass. At one point in the mass all the seniors received a letter from a teacher who had them in class. The letters were very moving and the teachers wished us well in the future. Although the day was fast-moving there was also time for thought and reflection. The retreat was a day that will long be remembered by all seniors. 4 A moment to relax. Where’s my contact?? De’s always the center of attention. Now, we know that’s not hot chocolate, Lisa! Something interesting over there guys?!? Ohhh! The three stooges. Football Films 17 Dances Homecoming 1982 Queen Karen Pokorny and King Greg VanDyke On October 22, the Scotus Shamrocks played their Homecoming game against Aquinas and celebrated their annual Homecoming dance. The Queen, Karen Pokorny, and King, Greg VanDyke, were crowned during the halftime of the game by 1981’s Homecoming royalty Lora Kurtenbach and Dave Englebert. The band, Wrecking Company played to the theme of “Sharing the Night Together”, which was the theme that was chosen by the senior class. Before the big Homecoming game and dance Spirit Week took place. These days were set aside to do crazy things to get the team and fans psyched for the game. Monday was called “Backwards Day”. During this day clothes were worn backwards. Shirts, earrings, and padlocks were placed on backwards by both students and faculty. Tuesday was “T.O.A.D. Day” which stood for “Team Organization Activities Day”. On this day students who belonged to an organization or participated in sports wore the uniforms that represent these activities. Wednesday was “Let’s Get Physical Day”. Jogging suits, muscle shirts, and headbands were worn by many. Thursday was “Mourning The Loss of the Monarchs”. During this day black was worn. Black gloves, sweaters, and socks were a few of the articles worn. Friday was “Green Day”. Everyone wore green this day to symbolize the spirit of SCOTUS. Terri Jackson and Chris Pokorny . ,____ | J y y+i T___ Looking back on days gone by, We remember a theme from junior high. It is only a song from that time. But we know it suits us fine. Our class has gone through a lot over the years. The happiness, hardships, and all the tears. We have grown as a class and become one, But we know there’s still much to be done. Throughout this past week our pride has shone through. The qualities: Unity and Spirit are found here too. Our last Homecoming is finally here. The game, the dance and the fun is drawing near. We’ll be feeling so fine, we’ll be dancing light as a feather. Because Friday night we’ll all be SHARING THE NIGHT TOGETHER! w Colleen McLaughlin and Scott Spenceri 21 Patty Wemhoff and Greg VanDyke 23 Sweetheart 1983 On February 16 the Sweetheart dance took place in the cafeteria. The evening was very enchanting. Sweetheart reflects the mood of Valentine’s Day, which was the setting for the Sweetheart Dance. The crowning of Queen Cathy McLaughlin and King Jack Kelly highlighted the evening. The decorating reflected the theme “Life is Just a Fantasy”. The band that played for the evening was “Flight”. The night will be well remembered for a long time! King Jack Kelly and Queen Cathy McLaughlin Chad Christiansen and Kelly Maguire Aren’t they all Sweethearts? What’s in the punch? Alan Engelbert and Cathy McLaughlin Let’s dance! Do ya 9peaka my language? 28 Time for romance. Don’t turn around uh, oh. You're leaving now it’s in your eyes there's no disguising it It really comes as no surprise to find that you've planned it all along. I see it now it comes so clear your insincerity We are starry-eyed to think that I would have known by now Now sure as the sun will cross the sky this lie is over Lost like the tears that used to tie Go for it Bri! 29 Wake up Jay. Why is the meat still moving? 30 31 Today’s ROC point question is ... Homecoming, Sweetheart, and Prom were among the many. Besides the memories on the night of Prom, the juniors remember selling all those magazines to raise money for the event. Other memories were the excitement of receiving class rings, and Mr. J. Puetz’s ever fun American History class. The year sped along as the juniors waited to take over the reign at Scotus as the Senior class of ‘84. The class sponsors were Mr. Hixon and Mr. J. Puetz. The year was filled with learning of foreign language, earth science terms, and having Co-ed Pe. It was a year for joining new clubs and participating in sports. They got to rub elbows with the upperclassmen both in the halls and in the gym to cheer the team on to victory. Students went to tape dances for the first time. Having a team with only two seniors, the Shamrocks cross country team performed well. The Shamrocks won the Scotus-Aquinas-Lakeview triangular meet with John Riley being the top Shamrock runner. They also won the Scotus Invitational, Fremont Bergan dual, and the Nebraska Centennial Conference meet. Although they didn’t send anyone to the state meet, the team represented their school in a way they should be proud of. The 1982 football season brought many memories and breathtaking moments that will not soon be forgotten. Although the shamrocks ended the season with a 6-3 record, this team ranked as one of the best to ever wear a Scotus jersey. This year, however, no coolers were broken, but a set of headphones paid the price for victory. This season was the only year that the Irish placed more than 8 people on the All-Conference football team, with 11 people qualifying. The Shamrocks started the year with a loss before they strung out six straight victories. But luck ran out on the Shamrocks before the end of the season as they lost the last two games of the year. The season finale against Fremont Bergan spelled “heartbreak” for all Scotus coaches, players, and fans. The Shamrock defense allowed the Fremont Bergan Knights to cross their 50 yard line only once. But once was too much as Bergan scored the only touchdown of the game and won the finale 8-4. The scoreboard is now blank, the helmets are put away, and all that remains of the 1982 football season are memories. But to all who played a part in the success of the Shamrocks, the memories will always be cherished. It culminated an intense effort by the volleyball team members to accomplish a 20-2 record and a final season Class B ranking of 5th. And two and a half months later, it’s come true it seems. To get to Lincoln that first week in November, Was a goal we set and something we wanted to remember. It began on a Tuesday when Albion was defeated. That first big win was something we really needed. From then until now and all the games in between, We just kept working closer and closer toward reaching that dream. Our parents have supported us all season long, It feels great to look up and see Mom and Dad singing that Scotus Fight Song, And the guys and their cheering and jingling their keys. Running on the court and huggin’ us till we fell on our knees. All our support we’ve gotten is appreciated we feel, The whole season has been awesome and unreal, Today and tomorrow hopefully we’ll play to the best of our ability. How far that will take us, we’ll just have to wait and see. The saying that we’ve used all season long still fits The Scotus Shamrock Volleyball team has NO LIMITS!! by Jo Rhode Boys’ Basketball Varsity: Row 1- Brian Van Dyke, Pat Krzycki, Mike Riser, Larry Prososki, Mike Quattrocchi, Roger Konwinski, Pat Kuta; Row 2 - Coach Dennis Zowada, Chad Christiansen, Jack Kelly, Mark Brezinski, Greg Van Dyke, Jim Heimann, Scott Spenceri, Coach Frank Spenceri. The spirit and enthusiasm shown in the Pep Club this year led the Scotus teams to successful seasons. Candy and chocolate covered peanuts were sold for the first time ever and proved to be a worthwhile fund raiser. Rain and wind during football games, and snow and ice during the basketball season did not affect the excitement the girls showed at every game. Our Pep Club is still one of the best in the state! It would seem that we have made progress in the Campus Ministry program here at Scotus since 1981 when the idea was introduced. A unique aspect of the program was the involvement of the students as ministers to a community that they are a part of. Liturgical planning and the summer garden for the poor showed student involvement. The members enjoyed helping the needy in our community through a food drive. Christmas caroling gave a feeling of unity within the team. Retreats for every high school class, that were planned by the team, were successful and will hopefully be repeated each year. The ice cream and volleyball party, repeated from last year, was enjoyed by everyone. A visit from Auxiliary Bishop Milone will be remembered by everyone at Scotus. The Auxiliary Bishop along with priests from the local parishes were the celebrants for the September All-School liturgy. 104 Future Business Leaders of America Row 1 - Patty Wemhoff, Virginia Sprunk, Laura Bierman, Miss Schutte, Kathy Prokupek, Pam Braun, Shelly Tschantre, Traci Ryba; Row 2 - Wayne Borer, Mary Lynn Zoucha, DeLois Hebda, Lisa Henggler, Colleen McLaughlin, Kim Neater, Cathy McLaughlin, Kelly Maguire; Row 3 - Kevin Molczek, Kerry Jarecki, Karen Mielak, Linda Laska, Lisa Kneifel, Stacey Podraza, Dave Love; Row 4 - Joe Tschantre, Paula Stopak, Betty Keller, Shelly Demuth, Theresa Rybinski, Janette Modelski, Jayne Wieser, Julie Engelbert, Lisa Keller, Carrie Kucera; Row 5 - Lori Sokol, Katrina Kaminski, Donna Bierman, Theresa Weiland, Jane Wolfe, Kathy Melcher, Chris Melcher, Becky Engelbert, Diane Zornes, Kathy Hellbusch. The Scotus Chapter of FBLA took a trip to Omaha on April 14th, 15th, and 16th. Eighteen members of the 45 attended the State Leadership Conference and stayed at the Holiday Inn. The Chapter submitted a Chapter’s Activities Report and Scrapbook for judging. The members participated by taking no more than six tests and no less than three. Each person was asked to go to two seminars on Leadership and Careers. When they were not taking tests or attending seminars they were sitting in their rooms, roaming around, swimming, playing pool, video games or golfing, or checking out booths of the candidates who were running for State Office. Four delegates, Kathy Prokupek, Laura Bierman, Cathy McLaughlin, and Kelly Maguire were elected to vote for the new officers Friday night. Everyone else either went to the dance or to the movie held at the Holiday Inn. Students winning awards at SLC were: Colleen McLaughlin and Diane Zornes, 4th place in the poster event; Virginia Sprunk for proofreading; Lori Sokol and Jane Wolfe honorable mention in the Creed Event, and Traci Ryba for her excellent job on the Scrapbook. The Scotus 1982 - 1983 Drama II class had an interesting and unique experience this year with their participation in the One-Act Play contests. They play they used, “Oh, What a Tangled Web,” proved to be educational and very worthwhile for all involved. Work on the production began in mid November and carried on until their competitions were over. In the play, a young girl makes up a wild story and the complications that grow from it are extremely funny. Suddenly needing an excuse, the girl fumbles for a moment and then blurts out that there has been a death in the family. Acutally, the only thing wrong in this family is that the cat is missing. In any case, people start coming over to express their concern and sympathy. The parents think they’re all referring to the missing cat and the complications grow! Conference competition was held on January 8, with Scotus finishing with a II. Districts were on January 17, with Scotus receiving a I and a II. As I write this annual message for the yearbook, I think of the many hundreds of hours of dedication on the part of the Journalism students and sponsor and the fine work they have’done. Memories on Film records well the activities and accomplishments of Scotus Central Catholic for us to hold and remember far into the future. I think it is interesting that a portion of the title of this yearbook is Tomorrow’s a Drean . So much of what we experience in our daily lives is the result of another’s dream. Persons of vision have built our Catholic school and have both sustained and supported it for well over a century of time. Foresight translated into dedication and hard work keeps us strong today. But, what about tomorrow? If tomorrow is a dream, then what does it hold for us? I have full confidence in tomorrow for 1 know we have many who will fashion our future at Scotus Central Catholic TODAY. Our students, especially our graduating seniors, are prepared to accept the challenge. It is they who hold the vision of tomorrow for it is they who were formed by the dreamers of today.
