With it we have the basic crew neck sweaters, button down shirts, baggy or straight leg slacks or jeans, a pair of topsiders or a pair of white tennis shoes. Many of the students took advantage of this look for school wear. Another fashion trend was “punk”, and although it was never really evident at Scotus, a few students went with the punk hair style. This was the short cropped hair. The punk style consisted of nearly any type of strange clothing. Fashion plays a big part of school, and at Scotus, the preppy look was definitely the fashion trend. Jami Muhle Tim Murray Diane Ogden Mary Placzek Angie Riley Robert Rybinski 10 Carole Podraza Ray Prososki Bill Slovinski Kathy Soulliere Margaret Spenner Todd Stepanek 11 Jon Stopak Jerry Taylor Jackie Thiele Tom Tooley Twas the night before the retreat, And all through Camp Luther, Not a creature was stirring, except for Andy and the other. The wood was all stacked by the fireplace with care, In case the day would be filled with cold air. The Seniors all nestled and snug in their beds, While thoughts of boredom danced in their heads. Sister Jeanette in her habit, And Father Wayne in his cap, Had just settled down despite the anxiety attacks. Then that morning, there arose such a clatter, The Seniors jumped from their cars to see what was the matter. Away to the parking lot they flew like a mass, Threw open the doors and shut off the gas. The moon on the breast of the God-provided frost. Gave the images of beauty which will never be lost. Then what to their wondering eyes did they see, But two yellow buses and a van for tardees. With heads all turned to give some quick looks, They knew in a moment, that it must be Mr. Brooks. More rapid than eagles our Seniors they came, And Sr. Francis whistled and shouted and called us by name. Now Bob and Mary and Tim she would call, With replies of here and present and one (blank) hole. To the top of the hill, and right next to Luther’s wall, Now dash away, dash away, dash away all! So up to the hilltop the buses they flew, With seats full of Seniors - and Fr. Kramper too! And then, in a twinkling, they heard on the doors, The pounding and knocking of 80 Seniors. As the group all entered, with a red glow on their face, They all headed for warmth near the fireplace. Senior Retreat As we opened up our day with a prayer to say, We were put into groups according to our birthday. As we sat and wrote and talked of many a issue, We brought out feelings that were so true. It started out smooth with Fr. Teigs and Joe on arrival, The morning break consisted of hot chocolate and roll. After more discussion of college and future plans, Preparation of meals started, a few washed their hands. Dinner consisted of chips and sloppy joes, As thoughts of outdoors spread from head to toes. Finally after the mush buckets went around, The doors were opened as the boys left in leaps and bounds. Scanning the hills and exploring the ravine, The Seniors got around by just about all means. As relax time ended and people drifted in, Fireside songs were sung to no end. With a few returning late, leaving the snow and the fun, All had been accounted for except for one. As an air of worry spread from table to next, Fr. Wayne departed in a desperate quest. With many volunteers to start a search party, Fr. Wayne showed up to make the group 80. Then the mass begun with Ray by the fire, And the feeling in the air had turned much higher. With readings and sermons and heavenly singing, A giant SHAMROCK appeared on a table in the building. It was made of cardboard and a offering of all, Symbolizing the Senior class does not do things small. As mass had ended and the administration entered. The kind thoughts of faculty were passed out and lettered. The tables were stacked by the men of muscle, The people crowded our buses in much hastle and bustle. As we left Camp Luther with Columbus in sight. The spirit echoed “Happy Retreat to all and to all a good night!” by Leo Zoucha The Senior Class Retreat turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of the year. A few pictures couldn’t capture all of the good times that were experienced. The Senior class together will remember a time of growing and learning about each other and about ourselves. The day will be remembered for all of the Seniors long after they’ve all gone their own ways. 13 “The Boys” at Henry Doorly. 15 Having problems - students? 17 Another exciting English 12-A class. Row 2 Engelbert, Torri Jackson, Steve Byers. The couples paraded in their best outfits. The ties were straightened and the hair was brushed. Scotus students assembled for the dance that one October night. Homecoming took place on October 16th. The festivities started after the football game in which Scotus downed Boystown in a thriller. The game came down to the last seconds with Scotus coming out triumphant 7-6. This excitement carried over to make it an exciting dance. In a change from the usual, the king and queen were crowned at halftime. The honors went to Lora Kurtenbach and Dave Engelbert. They were crowned by 1980’s Homecoming royalty Abbi Love and Ron Starzec. The Spirit Week started out with a “Firin-Up Day”, followed by “Punk Day”, “Tie ’em Up Day”, and “Green Day”. The pep rally and Kangaroo Court treaded on the heels of the girls basketball game on Thursday. The pep rally was followed by the 1st annual non-school sponsored bonfire. Then, on Friday night following the game, the crowd of students and sponsors danced to Jettison Etty and the theme “Rainbow Fantasies”. A good time was had by all. 21 Sweetheart 1982 King Jeff Krzycki and Queen Lori Zabawa As the crowds gathered that one Friday night, they celebrated much romance and gaiety that made it very enjoyable. The Scotus students were all dressed in the highest fashion. All this added up for great Sweetheart memories. On that Friday night, the 12th of February, the coronation of Sweetheart King and Queen took place. Last year’s King, Ken Heimann and Queen, Sandy Schaefer passed on their crowns and titles to the new King Jeff Krzycki and Queen Lori Zabawa. The Sophomore class put on a great Sweetheart dance. The candidates and students danced all night to the theme “Don’t Stop Believing” and the band “Avatar”. The cafeteria was brightly decorated with a Valentine setting of hearts hanging from the ceiling. 25 Rick Engel and Sue Heimann Tom Tooley and Mary Zuerlein 26 Greg Ernst and Tammy Miller Junior-Senior Prom 1982 I love the night life! The penguin hustle. A little romance. 29 We’re so glad we had this time together. The Junior-Senior Prom was held on May 1, 1982. The dance turned out to be very formal, with long dresses and classy tuxedos setting the mood. This year, the dance was held at the Elk’s Country Club, with dinner starting a 6:30. The dance followed beginning at 8:00. Reading of prophecies and wills took place between the dinner and the dance. The theme of the dance was “Always and Forever”, and the music was provided by the band Hightail. The prom turned out to be a big success, and a very memorable one for all who attended. Seniors will remember the prom well, as it was their last high-school dance. The evening did not end there, however, as the festivities continued into the night. Along with these memories the Junior class of ’82 will always remember the “fun” times spent in Mr. J. Puetz’s American History class. The Junior class project was to put on the Junior-Senior prom. “Always and Forever” was the selected theme for the 1982 prom, which was held, for the first time, at the Elk’s Country Club. The year went fast for the Juniors and they are patiently waiting on becoming the Senior class of 1983. Class sponsors were Miss Scheulke and Mr. Puetz. There were many new experiences such as moving to the 2nd floor lockers and taking such classes as Biology and World History. This was the year many experienced playing on Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Most sophomores this year received their driver’s license and now could drive to all the places they wanted to go. As sophomores, an important event was planning the Sweetheart Dance, held on February 19, 1982. The class sold candy bars to help fund the dance. The theme chosen was “Don’t Stop Believin’”. It’s the chance to rub elbows with the high school kids. Getting lockers is another highlight of the freshman year. There were exciting new classes like Spanish or German. Scotus placed fourth in the Albion Invitational, second in the Aurora Invitational, thirteenth in the Waverly Invitational, seventh in the North Bend Invitational, and fourth in the Aquinal Invitational. In the NCC meet the Scotus team placed second and at the District meet they also placed second qualifying them for state for the third year in a row. The team finished twelfth out of nineteen teams. In the Albion Invite they placed first, in the Waverly Invite they placed fourth, in the North Bend Invite they placed fifth and in the UNO Invite they placed fourth. To the team, the season was a memorable one. Going into the season, the Shamrocks took a deafening blow from Schyler to start the season with a 14-0 loss. The next week the team traveled to Lakeview to defeat the cross-town rival 18-6. The team traveled to Lincoln Pius, only to face a loss of 15-28. The following week was gameless. The week after, a home game against Hartington C.C. looked hopeful for a win. But, in the last 43 seconds a field goal shattered the thoughts of a win. It was now time to either lay down and “die”, or never say die. The Shamrocks chose the latter, as they traveled to Wahoo Neuman to defeat them in one of the most exciting games in Scotus history. The Shamrocks came home with a 13-9 win. The next week was Homecoming, and the Shamrocks faced a rated Boystown. The Cowboys fell 7-6 in the big upset. The Shamrocks fell to D.C. Aquinas the next week 14-40. In the last game of the season, the team traveled to Fremont Bergan. A .500 season was crushed as again a field goal in the last few minutes brought the Shamrocks their fifth loss, as the score stood at 7-9. To many, the season was a loss. But to the team it was success in disguise. State Honorable Mention Bob Wieser All Conference Row 1: Dave Love, Mark Brezinski, Greg VanDyke, Kevin Molczyk. And one to be proud of by all who have participated. Among the honors the Shamrocks racked up are: 1. B-4 District Champions 2. Nebraska Centennial Conference National Division Champions 3. State Tournament Participants (15-8 record) 4. Associated Press Class B 9th place ranking The season was an exciting one, especially toward the end. When the fans did not expect much from the team, the team came on. Sweeping Schuyler, Hartington C.C. and West Point at Districts, the team earned a trip to state. They were to face top rated Lincoln Pius X. The Shamrocks dominated the game against Pius for three quarters and three quarters of the last quarter. But in the last one quarter of the last quarter Pius came on with a tremendous scoring spurt and the win. The final score of 37-52 had nothing to do with the real closeness of the game. The team is to be congratulated on a fine season. 1981-82 BASKETBALL SEASON SCORES SCOTUS 56 Boy9town 53 SCOTUS 52 G1CC 57 SCOTUS 52 Cathedral 55 SCOTUS 69 York 67 (ovt.) The Campus Ministry Team accomplished many goals and set up many projects. One of these goals was to try to get the teenagers more involved in the celebration of the liturgy. Many of their projects went over well because of the teams creativity. Some of this creativity was seen in the lighting at the masses, the advent wreath, and the crosses in the rooms during Lent. One of the high points in the Seniors’ year was another project of the ministry team. The one day retreat at Camp Luther was set up by them. Through this 15 member team there comes a growth to our school and surrounding community. A growth of awareness of Scotus, involvement in the liturgy and a broader understanding of religion in our society today. Through these masses and other projects we come to realize that here at Scotus the Team is doing what it takes. 105 Future Business Leaders of America Row 1 - Miss Janssen, Karen Mielak, Shelly Tschantre, Kathy Prokupek, Kathy Mielak, Laura Bierman, Patty Wemhoff, Sandy Klopnieski, Mr. Clinch; Row 2 - Patty Wiese, Diane Ogden, Carole Podraza, Sue Heimann, Tracy Dreifurst, Karen Laska, Torri Jackson, Judi Kloke, Jackie Thiele; Row 3 - Jeff Beerbohm, Bob Kuta, Don Gates, Kelly Maguire, Traci Ryba, Pam Braun, Stacey Podraza, Kerry Jarecki, Colleen McLaughlin; Row 4 - Bob Rybinski, Lyle Kobus, Linda Laska, Lisa Henggler, Lisa Kneifal, Michelle Brooks, DeLois Hebda, Virginia Sprunk, Vicki Frost. 106 F.B.L.A. was really busy this year. The Drama II class spent much of November, December, and January daydreaming. That is they were working on their performance of “The Diabolical Daydreams of Danny Dawson.” Although they were unable to participate in the Conference competition they did make it to Districts. The class received an excellent rating for a job well done. The judges commented on the unique costumes and excellent characterizations by all involved. Ron Bernt and Carole Podraza each earned the recognition of superior actor and actress. The play dealt with the inability of Danny Dawson to deal with reality. Because of this problem, he escapes through daydreaming. His boss, a reformed daydreamer, recommends the therapeutic help of the Bombast Self-Assertiveness group. Once cured, Danny becomes a new man and is led to believe, by means of a devious Justin, that he murdered his boss. Even his great love for Eloise Holcombe cannot ease the sorrow of his boss. After a lengthy vacation, Mr. Selwn, Danny’s boss, returns to free Danny from his guilty conscience. 121 Spring Play The spring play, “It’s Great to be Crazy” was presented by the Drama Department on April 15. The Student Council in the 1981-82 school year was used as the voice of the students to get many projects accomplished. Starting off the year with a tape dance, they continued their tradition as being a source of fine activities for the students. With one workshop in the summer, the student council used the added help. The officers, Leo Zoucha, Jerry Taylor, Carole Podraza, Steph Grohs, led the group to a fine, successful year. To finish the days of May, the student council showed a scary late night movie and a raffle. 125 Clara Fletcher In recognition of 25 years at Scotus Central Catholic High School. Superintendent Duane Gross presents the award as Board President Mike Mullin acknowledges the award. Administration Scotus Central Catholic 1554 18th AVENUE • COLUMBUS. NEBRASKA 68601 • TELEPHONE 402 564-7165 £ Dear Friends, Once again It is my privilege to extend greetings to our friends on behalf of the entire Scotus Family. I am sure that you will enjoy this annual compilation of the year's events at Scotus Central Catholic. Cognizant of the many hours of time and devotion, I congratulate the journalism students and faculty sponsor for a job well done. The yearbook's theme Moments In Time captures the essence of such a work as this; to record and preserve the moments In our time at Scotus Central Catholic for enjoyment durlna the rest of our lives. A person's heritage Is always an Important aspect of where we see him at present. This Is also true for our school. The dedication planning and hard work of those who have gone before us have provided firm foundations for us. I believe we can be proud of our efforts this year in our commitment to continue to grow and plan for the future. Creative change firmly rooted In our traditions will provide quality Catholic education for our young people indefinitely. I sincerely hope that as you enjoy Moments In Time you consider all those who have gone before us and have made these moments possible. I look forward to our working together in order to provide this opportunity for generations to follow. It is for this goal we must strive. With every good wish. WUOIIC sj .
