The Senior class, in its own way. is a page of memories. And so we would like to share with you some of our memories. We remember, our first day in the big halls of Scotus Junior High. New faces, places, and nervous smiles. This was the first sign of our unity. 3 grade schools united in one. And along with that came making new friends! In 7th and 8th grade we had this tremendous Basketball team. They traveled to St. Ed and each time we came back singing at the tops of our lungs “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS The Jr. High play- The White Gypsy '-another sign of our unity, a working together unity! Julie and Tim. Lynette and Doug. Kelly and Ken. Sheryl and Brad, and more. Remember Pizza Hut after all the games blowing out candles, walking the alleys and getting kicked out. We used to get together for a purpose- to laugh, scream, fight. Now we have grown up. and we only get together for the reason of BEING TOGETHER! No matter what we always seemed to stick pretty close togeth- er. Our class has grown into not 2 groups of people but one group called .. The Senior Class of 81! And when we sit back and think of the times we have sat around bon fires, times we have cried together, laughed together or just plain got bored together and of all the NEW YEARS we have rang in together, we wouldn’t trade them for nothing. The preppie look includes: the monogrammed sweaters, the blazers, the shirts with short collars, the sweaters that button down the back, the donut-heeled shoes, the socks worn with sandals, and the baggy coats, pants, and purses. Fashion has turned towards the western look, too, which indudes, of course, the cowboy boots, hats, and, cowboy shirts. We From childhood we played and grew Going to the ballpark, playground or zoo. We caused some trouble now and then And we never got out of it, 'cuz Mom knew where we'd been For the first time in our lives we must say good-bye The feelings inside hurt so bad, that I start to cry. I never told you this, but I think you always knew You were a brother ... sister .. . friend .. . and I love you. So many faces I have seen in my years From happy to sad, From smiles to tears. And yet of all I want to keep until the end Is the one of you ... my good Friend. Everything we did, we did it together We were unpredictable, just like the weather. But just as the seasons changed, we changed too The sky above us is no longer blue. You and I laughed at the photos and of things we read I'm running out of words, I think all has been said. But of all the words that remain with me Is that one word that describes us ... WE by Tim Czuba Edda From Iceland Edda was a foreign exchange stu- dent at Scotus for the school year. She came from Fasdridsfordur, Ice- land where she had already graduat- ed from high school. She was born on December 11, 1962, and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Korger her host parents for the year. Scotus High School was enriched by Edda’s contributions and the ex- periences shared will become fond memories. The photographs and memories of this year’s Homecoming dance will remain cherished forever by all who attended. 19 We’ve Got Tonight On a clear, crisp, October night, many Scotus stu- dents were putting on their best dress and suit getting ready to step out for an evening of dinner, dance, and party. October 25 was this year’s date selected for the Homecoming Dance and festivities. At 8:00 p.m. many students and parents filled the Memorial Hall Gym in anticipation to see who would be crowned King and Queen. The candidates took their walk through the crowd and onto the stage. The titles of King and Queen of 1980 were given to Ron Starzec and Abbi Love. The crowning was done by 1979 Homecoming King John Ebner and his Queen Anita Feehan. The students walked down to the cafeteria, where the dance is traditionally held. The theme ‘‘We’ve Got Tonite was selected by the senior class and the cafe- teria was decorated with street signs, city lights and scences. The band Hit’n Run provided entertainment for the evening. The Scotus Student Body spent the whole week pre- paring for this special night. The classes decorated their halls and participated in Spirit Week. A pep rally was held in the new gym on Thursday night, and Friday night, the Pep Club held a car parade that followed the boys to the game field. Scotus played David City Aqui- nas and lost by the score of 22-14. Even though we lost, the spirit was still high at the dance. Homecoming 1980 was a very memorable dance for all who attend- ed. It was an unusual- ly spring-like evening with many students not wearing coats. The Memorial Hall Gym quickly filled at 8:00 for the coronation of the 1981 Sweetheart candidates. The candidates took their place on stage and watched last year’s King Tim Novicki and Queen Carol Taylor take their walk. Tim and Carol passed their crowns and ti- tles onto Ken Heimann and Sandy Schaefer. The Sweetheart Dance was tra- ditionally held by the Sophomore Class who chose this year's theme to be Precious Mo- ments . This year’s Junior-Senior Prom turned out to be a very formal gala with the boys wearing tuxes or three-piece suits and the girls dressed in spring formals. The festivities began at 7:00 with a prime rib dinner cooked by the junior mothers and served by the sophomores. The reading of the prophecies and wills provided entertain- ment between the dinner and dance. The prophecies were ready by; Dave Kantor, Lori Zabawa, Tim Zuerlein, Lora Kurtenbach. The Senior Wills were read by; Ron Starzec, Lynette Malmstrom, Ken Hei- mann, and Patrice Oppliger. The Junior Class choose A Time For Us for this year’s theme. Though the final record of 5-4 may not be the most impressive, each game was breathtaking and spinetingling as the next. Peaking midway through the season, the Sham- rocks stood proud with 1 5-0 record, and ranked second in the state in Class B. The five victories included wins over Schuyler. Auburn. Lincoln Pius. Omaha Holy Name, and cross-town rival Lakeview. A 27-0 romp over the ikings of Lakeview may be the most memorable game in the hearts of the Sco- tus fans. An expedition of total domination on the part of the Shamrocks saw the so called “Vikes” bite the dust in an excruciating masacre. After the 5th win of the season over Lakeview, Scotus fell to defeat in their four remaining con- tests. David City Aquinas. Wahoo Neumann, and Fre- mont Bergan all handed Scotus losses, but were rated 1, 2. 3. respectively in Class C at the close of the season. Boystown also defeated the Shamrocks and were also ranked at the end of the season being 9th in Class B. Even though the four losses plumented Scotus out of the ratings as well as state playoff contention, the spirit of the season will live on and long be remembered in the hearts of the Scotus fans as one of the most enjoyable in Scotus history. As the 1980-81 basketball season came to an end. the Sham- rock Roundballers found themselves with an over abundant amount oif accomplishments. Besides tallying the best record in Scotus history of 21-3. the Shamrocks stood high and mighty with a number of championship victories. First comes the thrilling squeaker over the Lakeview Vikings in the finals of the Platte Cage Classic. Next, the Irish swept the field in the NCC National Division Championship with a 3-0 record; and last, but certainly not least, comes the most exciting, hair-raising and memorable of all Championships — District B-4 at Norfolk. This will certainly be remembered in the hearts of all Scotus fans as the wildest and craziest victory in all the years of Scotus sporting events. It was then onto State for the Scotus Sham- rocks. as they showed a style and class no other team could match. Even though losing in the semi-finals, the Shamrocks gave their fans a special heartwarming each and every game and made them proud to be part of Scotus. To top off these numerous feats of greatness , the Sham- rocks produced a home winning steak of 17 games and counting; which will be a mark in the record books for years to come. The final rating saw Scotus 4th in Class B. having the 3rd highest scoring offense in the state. Certainly this team is one of a kind! Besides being involved in the games, the Pep Club also sold little green pom pons and “I’m a Shamrock Believer” pins. These items were available to the fans, so they could support the Shamrock teams also. Hopefully this successful time for Pep Club can be carried through next year. The Scotus Pep Club once again proved fantastic this year. 120 girls participated in this strong school club. One of the highlights was cheering at the boys basketball districts in Norfolk. There they were helped by the boys spirit club - flying super-Shams. painted Shamrock faces and all. This great support was enough to lead the boys onto STATE! An all school pep rally, derby hats, green handkerchiefs, and green balloons, were in- cluded in the Scotus scene before state, and also an actual Irishman mascot! In Lincoln, the pep club cheered in Pershing auditorium, surrounded by bleachers of green clad Scotus fans. The win at Pershing led to the Bob Devaney Sports Complex. An upset game was the outcome for the Shamrock loss, however, the memories of the support the Shamrocks received will never be forgot- ten. The 1980-81 school year for the Student Council was successful and rewarding. The Council started off the year with a successful tape dance in the old gym. Practically the entire stu- dent body attended and boogied to the music of DJ's Herman Wieser and Paul Podany. Next, the Council got on to bigger things. Six members consisting of Tim Czuba, Linda Wemhoff, Elaine Zoucha, Lora Kurtenbach, Kurt Bo- gus, and Kelly Maguire attended the annual District-5 Student Council Workshop where they learned many new ideas for und raisers and ways of bringing a Council together. And then came the exciting tape dance of the year. The Student Council sponsored a western tape dance with prizes going to the best dressed urban cowboy and cowgirl. It was a fun-filled night that the en- tire student body enjoyed. Overall, the Council got involved this year and started some new ac- tivities. Most important, they be- came involved with the students themselves. After all, isn't that what Student Council is all about? I would like to thank all of our advertisers for their support through- out the year. Because of you, Scotistics reached around 450 people every month, and in December, the alumni issue, almost 3,000 people received Scotistics. The first few days of November may have been windy and chilly outdoors, but the inside of the Scotus gymnasium was transformed into a sunny, palm tree- lined, Hawaiian atmosphere while the Scotus Drama and Music Departments presented Gidget Goes Hawai- ian. Starring were Patrice Oppliger and Leo Zoucha as Gidget and Moondoggie in the musical makeover of the early sixties popular movie series of Gidget. The musical was a tremendous success in each of the three performances. Special tribute goes to Mrs. Sandy Bernt and Mrs. Ginny Schnabel for the many long hours and hard work they put into the directing of the musical. Who turned out the lights? Speech Team The Scotus Speech Team excelled under the advisorship of Mrs. Bernt. The Speech Team won the Platte College Invitational Meet. Indi- vidual first places were: Julie Modlin, Informa- tive; Anne Sojka, Linda Wemhoff, Original Pub- lic Address. The team won the Conference title for the third year with 74.5 points. Two members re- ceived first place medals. They were; Lora Kur- tenbach, Informative; Sherry Zywiec, Original Public Address. For the first time in Scotus history, the team won the District title at the Blair Meet. Nine members qualified for the State Meet. Seven of the nine members made it into the final rounds at State, and the team took 5th overall in Class B. The Speech Team would like to extend spe- cial thanks to their Coach, Mrs. Sandi Bernt, for all her hard work over the past three years. Thanks SB! Row 1 - Lynette Malmstrom, Maria Riley. Whodunit - 1 - Act The Drama II class spent most of their time in December and January putting to- gether the production of Whodunit - a nutty comedy-mystery with a little corny twist at the end of it. The play didn’t compete at the Confer- ence Contest this year. There was a long Christmas break right in the middle of pro- duction and the cast just wasn’t ready for Conference. They were even a little hesitant about Districts. But, when Districts came, and the show went off without a hitch. Wait- ing around for the results was awful. Then - SHOCK - for the first time in the school's history, the 1-Act was selected for State competition. The State Contest was hard but fun, and the group received an excellent rating. The play Whodunit centered around a bi- zarre household that had a hated intruder. Finally the much hated person (?) is mur- dered and four detectives and one Junior Gl man were called in to solve the mystery. After some corny conclusions are drawn by the famous detective, it was discovered that the murderer and the murderee were not at all as they appeared to be. Cast Announcer . To those who knew her as a teacher or coworker, she was a unique member of the Scotus family. Mrs. Peck was the personification of faith, hope, and love. Dear Friends. The Administrative Team extends friendly greetings to all students, parents and friends of Scotus Central Catholic. We are expecially proud of this year's annual and of the students and faculty who devoted their time and talents to it. We look forward to the continued growth and success of the journalism department along with their contributions to the school and community. This has been an exceptionally good year for Scotus. We have risen to new heights academically, spiritually and in our activities. This degree of excellence does not just happen by chance. The keys to our successful year can be found in various aspects of our school and com- munity. We begin with a fine tradition which provides a stable structure upon which we can build, expand and grow. We have enjoyed fine leadership, people with a vision of the future and a strong faith to take us forward along this path of excellence. These people have sur- faced from the student body, the faculty, administra- tion. the Board, the community and all levels of our school community. This group of dedicated people has come to be known as the Scotus Family. Their goal is to provide the leadership and resources needed to keep Scotus Cen- tral Catholic a positive growing force in Catholic educa- tion. We invite you to join us as we look forward to an even better and brighter future, after all. you're one of the Family . Sincerely. Duane J.
