Co-Editors James Bonk And Sandra Bogus --THEY WATCH THE SCENE AND TELL IT AS IT WAS. Every year the Annual staff faces a decision to select a basic theme for developing the format of the SCO- TUS. This year two themes were proposed— CHALLENGES and UNITY. Both of these are good; so after a dis- cussion period the staff decided to use both by combining them to read CHALLENGES OF UNITY. Since uni- ty is necessary to the success of group endeavor, this was our own first chal- lenge to unite. Challenges of unity we experi- enced in all of our activities; on the football field, the basketball floor, at the golf course, and in the track meets. Also, at the Pep rallies, Sci- ence Fair, choral groups; every club and organization. In all these examples, each par- ticipant or individual functions as a team for one common goal that is shared by all--Victory. Even in de- feat, the team loses, it is a group loss. Loyal fans and spirited Pep club girls provide the support that unity challenges. Sports are not unique in challeng- ing the best in a student. The theme is relavent to class groups and class- room situations, also. Senior Work Day, Juniors bake sale or pop bottle drive, the Student Council Magazine Drive, Vegas Nite, Science Fair, Scotistics deadlines, or the Annual staff work nights; all of these were challenges of unity to be successful; a challenge to individual growth that would not have been possible outside the Drama club where every actor has his supporting cast, or the S-Club that challenges real effort to improve. Scotus students saw evidence of greater unity present also in the com- munity of Columbus in the failure of Amendment 12. This spurred greater effort by the School Board to take other action that would keep Scotus actively alive and open for their sons and daughters to get a Catholic edu- cation. The Shamrock, the Scotus Mothers, and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus with their united financial help in scholarships and other aids have met their challenge to make the year 1971 at Scotus a success.
