Every year the Annual staff faces a decision to select a basic theme for developing the format of the SCO- TUS. This year two themes were proposed— CHALLENGES and UNITY. Both of these are good; so after a dis- cussion period the staff decided to use both by combining them to read CHALLENGES OF UNITY. Since uni- ty is necessary to the success of group endeavor, this was our own first chal- lenge to unite. Challenges of unity we experi- enced in all of our activities; on the football field, the basketball floor, at the golf course, and in the track meets. Also, at the Pep rallies, Sci- ence Fair, choral groups; every club and organization. In all these examples, each par- ticipant or individual functions as a team for one common goal that is shared by all--Victory. Even in de- feat, the team loses, it is a group loss. Loyal fans and spirited Pep club girls provide the support that unity challenges. Sports are not unique in challeng- ing the best in a student. The theme is relavent to class groups and class- room situations, also. Senior Work Day, Juniors bake sale or pop bottle drive, the Student Council Magazine Drive, Vegas Nite, Science Fair, Scotistics deadlines, or the Annual staff work nights; all of these were challenges of unity to be successful; a challenge to individual growth that would not have been possible outside the Drama club where every actor has his supporting cast, or the S-Club that challenges real effort to improve. Scotus students saw evidence of greater unity present also in the com- munity of Columbus in the failure of Amendment 12. This spurred greater effort by the School Board to take other action that would keep Scotus actively alive and open for their sons and daughters to get a Catholic edu- cation. The Shamrock, the Scotus Mothers, and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus with their united financial help in scholarships and other aids have met their challenge to make the year 1971 at Scotus a success. When I first arrived in Columbus, 1 thought life would be very different from my life in Germany. 1 found that it really is not the same. But when you come right down to it, the two countries are becoming more and more the same. Surely, there are a lot of physical differences, but the important thing, the thinking about life, is the same here as there. As you might know, school was not rough on me. I enjoyed my senior year at Scotus and I never became homesick, although there were a few times when I regretted very much having left my home. Well, most of us will be going our own way now, and I will hardly ever see some of you again. So, unless I meet you again, I wish everyone the Best of Luck. Good-bye, and (how is that again?). . . SPONSORED BY CURRY BROTHERS Our Leaders Speak The purpose for the existence of Catholic schools has revolved since they were founded in the 1800's. At one time their purpose was to protect the student from secular influence, and to teach him to mem- orize truths of faith, to form him to follow, to con- form to customs of Church and State. Vatin II changed the Church from a defensive to an offensive Church, to an Apostolic launching pad. Along with the changing Church, the purpose for existence of Catholic schools changed. Today the Catholic school encourages students to be creative, to discover, to lead in the search for deeper truth, seek out evil and destroy it, to reform and form both Church and State, 72 Sister M. Bemardis, Principal of Scotns. to be free sons of God, to know self, and to grow into the whole man. The challenge facing the Catholic school is to allow freedom for growth along with guidelines for respect for neighbor, to allow the search for truth against the background of an enriched history, and to motivate the student to bring about the unity of the sons of God. My prayer is that Scotus Central Catholic is that type of Second Vatican Council school which provides an atmosphere from which will come an adundance of future leaders for the Church and our beloved Country. 4c Vital to Scotus is each student. Scotus exists for the student and a student must be operative and co- operative for Scotus to achieve its purpose. Our concern is the development of the individual s talents. The self-study undertaken by the admin- istration and faculty this year had the sole purpose of improving the quality of education a student can receive in Scotus. Any changes proposed or intro- duced by the evaluation was to meet a need that some student had in his present environment. It is the hope of those who teach and guide you that the curricular changes being made will aid you to grow into an indicidual able to cope with the spiritual and social demands that confront you today. A school is no better than the students that com- pose it. Unless students are concerned about the development of their fellow students also, and the accomplishment of reaching also, and the accomp- lishment of reaching their goals, the school cannot produce educated individuals to assume the leader- ship expected of them, indiciduals who will make the world a better place because they have lived in it. It is the earnest wish of your principal that every student going forth from Scotus will carry in his heart a deep concern for other indiciduals and a deep faith in God. The capable and inspiring leadership of these two individuals was recognized in the recent Evaluation of the school by the North Central Accrediting Agency and the State Department. Faculty and students join in lauding their dedication to raise the standards of Scotus make it and to keep it one of the best schools. 73 Religion Unites All Men As Brothers BOTTOM LEFT: Rev.
