Editorially Speaking . . . The Annual Staff chose SPIRIT as the theme for the 1970 edition of the SCOTUS. This is a new dec- ade and we witnessed lots of spirit this year. Spirit has a broad mean- ing in the educational field, in school life and all community ac- tivities associated with school. When one speaks of school spirit, he automatically thinks of rooting cheerleaders, a screaming pep club, and loyal fans, all boosting the team on to a victory under the ideals of good sportsmanship. But one grasps a deeper, and wider meaning as one witnesses school spirit in evidence at Scotus. Spirit at Scotus is the atmosphere of the school. You see it in a group of voters in the Commons, in a staff of reporters and journalists getting the statistics for the SCOTUS or the latest news for a SCOTISTICS story. Again you feel it as you watch an enthusiastic student hanging posters before a game, or when you listen to a chairman try- ing to get the group to execute a project. You also sense it in the joyful applause given to a student who has achieved a scholarship. And then there is a spirit that per- vades the halls of Scotus as the class about to graduate, gets to- gether for the final practice of the solemn walk up the aisle to re- ceive the long-awaited diploma. Every class at Scotus takes away some of that spirit as it goes but the spirit still remains in the teachers and students to be com- municated to others as an unend- ing spirit that lives in us and be- comes a part of us in time. May the spirit of the class of 70 live long in Scotus. 2
