The Annual Staff chose SPIRIT as the theme for the 1970 edition of the SCOTUS. This is a new dec- ade and we witnessed lots of spirit this year. Spirit has a broad mean- ing in the educational field, in school life and all community ac- tivities associated with school. When one speaks of school spirit, he automatically thinks of rooting cheerleaders, a screaming pep club, and loyal fans, all boosting the team on to a victory under the ideals of good sportsmanship. But one grasps a deeper, and wider meaning as one witnesses school spirit in evidence at Scotus. Spirit at Scotus is the atmosphere of the school. You see it in a group of voters in the Commons, in a staff of reporters and journalists getting the statistics for the SCOTUS or the latest news for a SCOTISTICS story. Again you feel it as you watch an enthusiastic student hanging posters before a game, or when you listen to a chairman try- ing to get the group to execute a project. You also sense it in the joyful applause given to a student who has achieved a scholarship. And then there is a spirit that per- vades the halls of Scotus as the class about to graduate, gets to- gether for the final practice of the solemn walk up the aisle to re- ceive the long-awaited diploma. Every class at Scotus takes away some of that spirit as it goes but the spirit still remains in the teachers and students to be com- municated to others as an unend- ing spirit that lives in us and be- comes a part of us in time. May the spirit of the class of 70 live long in Scotus. 2 OTU. The source is a dedicated administration. A word to describe it is Teamwork. Father Meyer, Superintendent, and Sr. M. Bcmardis, Principal, now look to the Spirit of 70 to keep the Scotus standards high and the mor- al tone good. This dedication to Catholic education for Columbus students has spurred them on to a hard-driven campaign for finan- cial aid, a need which had to be met at a time when other schools were forced to close. Because they were concerned and interested, we have a Catholic high school, vi- tally alive, a school we are proud to attend, which has provided us with the opportunity to advance in the practice of Christian living and sharing with our fellow man our Faith. Our minds and talents have been developed in all fields of sciences, government, music, art, languages, and culture. The greater lessons of sharing the ex- periences of daily school life in a Christian atmosphere has been to prepare us for the greater classes taught in the classroom of the world. We owe a debt of gratitude to the leaders who have guided us during these years of growing up. To the people who have co- operated in our formation of ideals here at Scotus, who have allowed us to grow, we say Keep up the Spirit. The Spirit Of'70 In Service The people who appear on these pages have dedicated their services to the well- being of the students of Scotus. SPONSORED BY MEL'S TV Religion classes in Father Adams' office are unique. Even when the sign reads out strange sounds can be heard from within and the chances are that a whole class may be participating in a session with Father. As Religion co-ordina- tor for Scotus, Father has brought many changes in methods. Father Cal Giesen joined the faculty in the second semester. He teaches Religion, is assistant pastor of St. Bons. Brother Charles Potocki, OFM, taught Religion in Scotus while waiting for his final preparation to ordination into the priest- hood. In his religion classes he appealed to modem minds. 75 Father Price, St. Isidore pastor, greets his freshman class and all feel happy and confident in his presence. Father Rizzo, St. Rose pastor, Genoa, listens to a lively discussion in his Freshman Religion class. Father Regis Watts, OFM, pastor of St. Bons, teaches the juniors of Scotus and challenges a response. Father Fergus bids farewell to St. Bons and Scotus. Now at Humphrey. Julia Lopez Gives View About Life Here Every day in the United States is exciting. I am grateful to the Student Council and to the National Catholic Wel- fare Conference, for making it possible for me to attend Scotus Central Catholic High in my senior year. In La Paz, Bolivia, where I live, there are one million and a half people. This is what I noticed first when I came to Columbus, that it is so small if you compare it to La Paz. There are other differences, too numerous to relate in this short space. But I find the people here in Columbus and Scotus very interesting and friendly. I want to tell you I never felt like I was a stranger, everyone makes me feel at home. My host family has been very good and kind to me and helped me a great deal in learning about Ameri- can customs. The school system is different but I like Scotus and the students are kind to me. The teachers, also are friendly. I hope more young people can come to America. SPONSORED BY ROGERS MOTOR CO.
