.L 4. Minn., ' Athletics Wanted J' OYCE KOBE A plan was outlined by the Seniors in the first semester whereby Scott- ville would be able to regain her old standing in the county as an educational center by means of providing a suitable place for athletic sports of all kinds and by enlarging the seanty library. A gridiron for football, a baseball diamond and a gymnasium for basket- ball, all indoor sports thru the winter were petitioned for. The attendance of the High School has decreased twenty-five since last year when it should show an increase and the majority of the students are girls. lioys require more exercise than girls and will not attend school where ath- letics cannot be obtained and as the result of Scottville's backwardness in providing suiiable sports for its youth and that also of the community of which Scottville is the natural center, we are regarded as back numbers, fossils, and antiques by the more progressive towns about us. A village to the east of us is building a modern schoolhouse next year and our attendance will be still more decreased, for what chance have we of com- peting with a modern school completely equipped and up-to-date? An attempt was made this fall to organize a football team but from a school with an attendance of over one hundred there were not a large enough number of boys to make a football eleven. Our baseball diamond is a public one and very inconvenient to the school but in spite of that fact our boys have been able to put in some very beneficial practice as the scores of the games testify. 'Phe town lacks a gymnasium and where is a better location than on the school ground? When the community hall was built it was hoped and sup- posed that a plan for a gymnasium would be included but as the building stands now there is no provision for athletics. We are very glad to find that our plea for a library has had some effect. A state librarian took over the organization in our scanty stock ot' books in the library, superintending the cataloguing of them and a new stock. We have now a library ot' which we believe we are justly proud and which is accessible to everyone of the town. The plan outlined by the Seniors and presented to the board for their consideration was approved and backed by a statement of our motives and
