State News 1978 was election year in Arizona. Candidates for governor were Bruce Babbit, Gene Lewter, Ev Mecham and Jessica Sampson. Incumbent Bruce Babbit won the race. One is- sue in the election was that of infla- tion. In Arizona, inflation rose 11.4'Zn in 1978 alone. While candidates were busy, the spraying of cotton fields near the ln- dian reservation caused many health hazards to area residents. And yet another disturbing health problem was Aflatoxin, which con- taminated milk during the summer months. Gary Tison and Randy Greenwalt escaped from the Arizona State Prison, aided by Tison's three sons. After a murdering spree that encompassed several states, the Ti- son gang was captured. Gary Tison, however, eluded a huge manhunt, but his decomposed body was found weeks later in the desert. In the schools, enrollment continued to decline was was expected to do so until 1984. As many as seven of the Scottsdale schools were expect- ed to close. Culture came to Scottsdale in the form of the Old Globe Theatre Com- pany. Many SHS classes attended performances of this Shakespear- ean troupe at the nearby Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Hogan's Heroes' beloved Bob Crane was found blugeoned to death in his Scottsdale apartment. Dubious cir- cumstances surrounded the death of this one-time television star who was appearing at the Windmill Din- ner Theater. Was it Colonel Klink?
