The realization that life does not revolve completely around school kept students busy in many directions. The start of weekendHToga Parties was the crazy movie Animal House. Students' favorite movie stars were Burt Reynolds of Smokey and the Bandit, and Diane Keaton of Annie Hall fame. It wasn't unusual to see SHS students waiting in lines over night to buy tickets for the many great concerts that hit Arizona. Between Tucson and Tempe, fans paid dearly to see Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Chuck Mangione, Jerry Riopelle and the Rolling Stones. After fifteen years the Stones were still going strong, while Billy Joel was enjoying a new popularity. Dancing to the rhythm of the Bee Gees at discos like Sun Devil Lounge kept students busy on weekends. For those who preferred to stay close to home, the craziness of Staurday Night Live was on the TV. Watching guest hosts like Steve Martin kept students up until all hours of the night. Driving down Scottsdale Road, radios were tuned to KDKB and KOPA. The favorite songs came from the Beatles, Billy Joel and Linda Ronstadt. A quick swing into McDonalds gave everyone the Big Mac and fries they needed to keep them going. And school? The friendly people and open campus made students happy, while the long lunch lines and stringent attendance policies were not very popular. Students were not overly preoccupied with the future, although most looked forward to being successful and getting married.
