Miss Marie Sellars Xl The outstanding record set by the Class of 1941 indicates one thing, the excellent service rendered us by our sponsor, Miss Marie Sellars. Though thick and thin she has stood by, foreseeing our problems, and guiding us through the numerous difficulties that beset the efforts of any class engaged in so many activities. Especially noteworthy has been her Work in making this 1941 Bluff the book that it is. lt is in the spirit of grateful appreciation, therefore, that we, the Class of 1941, dedicate this annual to one who has done the job. Dedication We Wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Glenn R Johnston for his excellent assistance in making this ai bigger, better and different annual. The class of '42 launched upon the sea of high school education in 1938 With a class membership of 237. Headed by Phyllis Martin and Don Waite, head girl and head boy, they successfully completed their freshman year and began on the second round. A As sophomores, they continued their education by struggling through geometry, world history, Caesar, and biology. And now, upper-classmen! Gfficers are Jack Stackhouse, president, Bill Hackman, vice-president, Margy Ellis, secretary, and June Kelley, treasurer. Under the co-sponsorship of Miss Mabel Yensen and Miss Miriam Mahaffy, the junior play production Why Worry and the junior- senior prom completed a year of highlights for next yearls seniors. Junior-Senior Prom Sea splendor! ' Under-Water Wonder! White-capped Waves! NIIRIANI MAHAFFY So was the junior's acquatic tribute to the class of '4l. To the music of Johnny Neillls or- chestra, upperclassmen enjoyed an evening of en- tertainment, climaxed by the Coronation of Queen Lorrie Barclay and her attendants, Pat Johnson, Marjorie Kinnamon, Audrey Osaka and Fern Wigren. The ocean-floor show, directed by Jack Stack- house, featured dances by the Mermaids, and a Vocal selection by Jack Lyons, following the dis- covery of the treasure chest. The little corporal, Whose flaming spirit marked him as one of the greatest competitors ever to Wear the Bearcat colors, made football opponents forget his slight stature and dig into the sod every time he handled the ball. He carried his activities into other departments of the school, serving on the student council, taking part in dramatic activities and depending on that spirit to carry him through in everything he undertook. He Was co-captain of the Bearcat football team in 1940. In addition his performance at guard on the state championship basketball team this season Was a major factor in bringing the title home to Scottsbluff. Scottsbluff 19, Lyman 0 - September 21 A green Scottsbluff high school football team made its first competitive showing of the 1940 season against Lyman. The Baumgaertel-Hight passing combination held the erratic squad together. Scottsbluff scored in the second, third and fourth periods. All of the substitutes were given a chance in the contest. Scottsbluff 13, Torrington 0 - September 27 The Bearcats were in command the first half, scoring two touchdowns and converting once, sparked by Baumgaertel, Brown, and Farrar. The Trailblazers, led by the elusive Can- field of Torrington, held the Scottsbluff gridsters scoreless during the last two periods. Bayard 19, Scottsbluff O - October 4 Bayard's brilliant running attack, spurred by Dutch Bas- tron, overran the lighter and inexperienced Scottsbluff squad. Outstanding in secondary defense were Dixon, McCord and Davidson. Farrar was the bulwark of the Bearcat line. Lincoln 48, Scottsbluff O - October 11 Well ------ Scottsbluff 7, Cheyenne 6 - October 18 Trailing at the half, 6 to 0, the Bearcats scored and con- verted in the third period, to nose out the Indians. Hollis Brown, Dick McCord and Kenneth Stratton clicked in the backfield, while Bob Backer, Jay Dixon and Jack and John Walters formed a stalwart line. 5 42 siwvkfi -75 Scottsbluff 19, Mitchell 6 November 1 Tigers vs. Bearcats! In a comedy of errors the Scottsbluff regulars nosed up a 19-6 score, but collapsed in the second half and the game was completed by the underclassmen. The thrill of the game was an 84-yard run for a touchdown on a pass intercepted by Big Jim Farrar, with Kenneth Stratton running beau- tiful interference. Alliance 0, Scottsbluff 0 November 13 Brrrrrr-a postponed Armistice Day classic found the weather man to be the victor, as the game ended in a scoreless tie. Both teams showed considerable life by running nice gains at times, but were unable to reach pay dirt. Lotipeich was the key man in the Alliance line- up, while the Bearcat aggregation showed con- siderable line power in Pratt, Walters, Driscoll, Backer and Malott. Ralph Malott received a serious neck injury which ended his high school football career. ,lf ,.., Scottsbluff 7, Gering 6 November 21 The Baumgaertel, Davidson, Stratton and Farrar passing combinations brought Turkey- day victory late in the fourth quarter. Ogilvie showed up well as fullback. Backer was out- standing in line-defensive play. Rubottom and Reeder knifed through the Bearcat defense, but in the end it was to no avail. Scottsbluff 13, Sidney 13 Novembei' 29 Sidney, an underrated team, gave Scotts- bluff the mos surprising game of the season. The Maroons were highly determined when they took the field. Scottsbluff scored first in the opening period and was equalled by Sidney. Driscoll, at left-tackle, was conspic- uous with his defensive attack. Kratz and Brown led the conflict for Sidney. Foot all Statistics The statistics below show how the Bearcats fared during the 1940 season against eight foes. With the Lincoln game erased from those statistics, the team would have broken even with Cheyenne, Torrington, Lyman, Bayard, Alliance, Gering and Sidney in the statistical department, but the green players, who be-- gan the season, were not ready to face the might of the experienced Links, and ftook a drubbing in both score and statistics. A steady improvement during the season, checked at times by injuries which forced use of new combi- nations in the field, was evidenced with probably the greatest upset of the season coming in the final game, when Sidney held the Bearcats to a 13-13 tie. . A passing game was the secret of the team's suc- cess against several teams which outweighed it. The Larry Baumgaertel to Jim Farrar combination was a constant threat, pulling the Cheyenne struggle out of the fire. In the Gering game the Bearcats again surged from the rear via the air route. Cameras and printed words cannot contain The thousand thousand little things That make school life joyous, Nor can they catch the dull and stupid things we do. But both have been and are. Mine, they are, to regret or cherish or forget: The banter of classmates, Quick smiles, The comfort of a teacher's friendliness, The weight of his displeasure, The anguish of strange, new thought, The warming glow of success, The chagrin of failure, The drag of idleness, Friendships quickly sealed-as quickly broken, The closeness- of crowds, cheers, moans, the pangs of defeat, the throbs of victory. t And who but I will ever know The pain of growing up, The thrill of new felt loves, That makes youth such an aching to endure. f 1 Youth comes but once, And if l cannot cling to it, Its memories are mine. This book is, too, my own. csignedi ' I The student who was I.
