EWG' R04 Devi' Athletics, Coach Aikman A slow start, some mid-winter surprises, a winning streak and a cold finish summerize the 1959- 60 edition of the Scotland Eagles who won seven and lost seventeen, After Mecca, Westfield, and Kansas took the Eagles' measurement, Bridgeton, recent conqueror of Mecca, handed us our first victory, 55-35, It was as easy as the score indicated. On the road at Martinsville and Dana we raced dovm to the wire but lost in the last vital minutes. This was often our story this year. We took our second victory Dec. 6 from Hills- dale then dropped three pointers on the road to Wallace and Brocton. St. Bernice and Westfield spank- ed us by margins of 16 and 22 points. At Westfield we had a rhubarb with the refs who felt we objected too strenouslyg they thumbed three boys to the bench, Again, we slipped up on Newport's tough Tigers 65-59 then hung up our togs until dropping the first of two one point games to YA, New Year's night. Our homecoming game went to Chrisman. A week later in the Ambraw Valley Tourney Martinsville beat us, but the next night the Eagles couldn't be stopped after trailing 27-14 and grabbed the third place trophy from Brocton, 59-56. In the Wabash Valley we lost to Sumner 61-54 after trailing 35-19 at half. The score was 53-50 a,,,gggtyg,a, ,. , it LS lgg f-tt, ., its uni, . .,,., .. ,, Coach Brewington with 2:40 left. Another one point loss to YA and a brief skirmish sharpened us up for the Dana Aggies, J an. 29, Trailing 35-25 at half, we won our fifth game 63-62. Beginning to play ball like real vets we smashed St. Bernice 66-55 and Wallace 64-41 for Scottland 's longest winning streak in nearly a decade. The Scottland Grade School basketball teams enjoyed one of the best seasons in several years. We had 33 boys participating, who had plenty of team spirit, desire and the will to win. The heavyweight team won ll and lost 3 games. They won third place in the county tournament and came in second in Scottland's Basketball Carnival. The team outscored their opponents 496 to 359. Phil Hutson was the teams leading rebounder followed closely by Tom Porter and Ed Longfellow. In scoring Ed Longfellow scored 140 points in 14 games, Tom Porter 97 in 13 games and John Bright 90 points in six games. Ed Longfellow won the heavy weight free throw award with 53070, The lightweight team after winning only two games last year came back-and needed only one win to finish with a 50070 season. They won '7 and lost 8. The team was outscored 382 to 326. The scoring was equally divided between Larry Bolen, Martin Avenatti, and Phillip Porter. Phillip Porter won the lightweight free throw award with 44070.
