THE. PERSIANS HE Persian Empire, under Cyrus the Great, expanded from a minor kingdom of the Medes and Persians to a vast Empire, extending from east to west from the Indus to Tigris rivers and north to south from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean. History gives no record of a period greater in the advancement of humanitarian progress, justice, equity, sim- plicity and manly honor than that during the reign of Cyrus. He was great because he was good, kind, honorable, simple and just. Under the short reign of Cambyses, son and successor to Cyrus, Egypt was overcome by the Persians and became tributary to the Persian throne. Returning from the Egyptian campaign, to defend his throne against the pretense of Smerdis the Magian, Cambyses lost his life in a fall from his horse. The reign of Smerdis the Magian was short and inconsequential. His pretenses were quickly discovered ,and the Persians, under Darius, cut short his reign and his life in punishment for his unwarranted offense. Under Darius the Babylonian Empire, under the reign of Bel- shazzar, fell to the Persians, as prophesied by Daniel. Darius established a Persian court of splendor in Babylon. Nevertheless Darius revived the decrees of Cyrus, freeing the Jewish captives, and authorized the rebuilding of the city and temple at Jerusalem, ending the captivity of the Jews of seventy weeks of years fol- lowing the spoiling of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. It is of these periods the drama treats.
