During the three years we have been here, we have often admired and proudly shown visitors the replica of the seal on the floor of the main corridor. We have pointed with pride to the artistic beauty, the symmetry, and the implied dignity which our seal represents. But the School Seal embodies more than these qualities: it symbolizes a philosophy, an unwrit- ten decree, a symphony of life that harmonizes idealism. inspiration a sensitiveness to the fine and beautiful' 't stands for all for which we hope as we commence on a threshold of new and vital experiences The richness of the earth we marvel at all that has been has come from the humble sod this creation of nature gives freely without pretentron lt is therefore befitting that the originator of our seal should have built our symbol upon the firm rich earth The strength and grandeur of a tree the simplicity of its beauty the benevolence of its boughs the fruits of its blossoms we have taken each of these offerings for granted yet how dependent we are upon these benefits Philosophrcally there is much to be derived from an understanding of and an appreciation for our natural environment Thus we find cr tree composing a prominent part of the symbolic presentation The shield has come to be associated with protective arms It is to be desired that education will provide oppor tunity for freedom for all peoples freedom from want from fear freedom of speech and freedom to worship God as one so chooses Freedom in its entirety from preludice and anxiety a pursuance for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness With all this it is our hope that we may keep foremost the desire which is expressed by the sandal which is found on the seal The Roman name for this winged shoe is Talaria symbolically it is the future it is progress in the humanities The American people were born of the pro neers who did not fear adventure into a new territory Let it behoove us to suppress the desire to run to the woods when we are faced with accepting leadership for the advance of new ideas And so we the Class of 1948 go FORWARD to join the efforts of those who have gone before 1877 COATESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL 1948 N 2:3591 X. 53 'N- , News 18 71' , r 1 2 , .
