Joan Champe As sistant THE SCOTTONIAN, 1957 4 Sandra Powell Scottonian Editor GJ FOREWORD It is your actions and attitudes when you are on your own that reflect what you really are. - Vambee While looking through and reading this Scottonian think of your self as a DIAMOND and ob- serve the new facets you have added to your main cut this year. This year you have had the opportunity to become more D ependableg take more I nitiativeg show your A nimationg improve your M oralityg gain better O ptomismg become more N atural in your day to day livingg be more D emocratic in your thinkingg and more S incere in your actions. Probably there were times this year when you were facing rough black stones in your classes, you undoubtedly met with some little difficulty and if you did, remember that you learn by mis- takes and a gem cannot be polished without friction. We have endeavored to make this annual something you will be proud of and in later years, whe n you look at it, you will be able to see the curricular and extra-curricular activities that have helped you add polish to your DIAMOND this year, 1956 - 1957. - Sandra Powell THE SCOTTONIAN, 1957 SCOTTONIAN STAFF Agsogiate Egifgrg Judy Dixon Marvagene Nelson S1 ff Ralph Izard Charleen Sulhvan Renee Cozart Photo graphm Ed1tor Ge rald Ba rke r 8 Art Edxtor Dorcelene Page Staff J'1mmy Mlller Clarence Hager Rxchard Jarrell Staff Zenola Maxey Lo1s Woodrum Loralne Toney Tommy Buntxng Bobby Rogers Jon Rea V1rg1n1a Bell Opal Sxders Tuck1e PYICE Light is the task share the C1rculat1on Manager Mary Ann Estep THE SCOTTONIAN 1957 a I R- X Marieda Charles l K xx . . ig L ,l,, A, when many load Hom er SCOTTONIAN STAFF Assistant Business Manager Barbara Dailey Business Manager Elizabeth Ros e Subs CTIEIIOH Manage rs P Brenda Price Frances 5111! Each have been created better than anything of its kind. Man was c reated in the image of God. The DIAMOND, according of Mohs' scale, is from ninety to one hundred times harder than corundum, the hardest known substance except the DIAMOND. Of special importance is the potential virtues of both. Nothing is more lovely thana lovely person, because his Creator is love. The DIA- MOND symbolizes re pe ntance and innocenceg both of these qualities are virtues of lovely people. The DIAMOND is highly valued as a gem. When cut into forms with many reflecting faces or facets it shows remarkable brilliance and play of color. Place it in the rough in the hands of a 10 A. B., Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W. Va. M. So it is with a young man or woman, ir- re s pective of his station in life or material possessions. Acquire through careful study the essentials of refinement, culture and knowledge -- weighty, sound and solid -- and one will cast abrighter beam across his span of time. Tickie Vincent, Bob Rogers, and Larry Javins did the scoring. Revenge is sweet. Q1-Ol Sept. 14 Played fine football in defeating Chapmanville 45-O. The Ticker, Bob Rogers, and Jerry Tawney racked up the scores. Things look good. K2-Ol Sept. 21 Still did a fine job in racking up Sharples 42-7. Hoskey Rogers, Tickie, Bill Hunley, and the Toe Javins did the scoring. Hey, a winning streak! Q3-Ol Sept. 29 Ran a rough bunch of Hillbillies to a standstill as we edged Man 13-7. Dave Mosley and The Ticker crossed the goal line and The Toe booted one EP. Going Hog Wild. C4-Ol Oct. 5 Lost our fir st game of the season to Sherman, Tickie scoring both TD's. Robgrjtaiiholl 10 What has 18 legs and catches flies? In case you don't know, the answer is a baseball team and around the halls of Scott High School, baseball is a sacred word, for it is, by far, the most productive sport of the school. Both football and bas- ketball produced winning teams this year, but over a period of 10 years the diamond sport prevails. Over the past 5 years the spring sport can boast of a phenomenal record. In compiling won-lost records of 18-4, 15-l, 13-7, and 17-5, and winning the Boone County championship four out of nine times the Hawks have p r oven that Madison, Danville, and area can,and does produce baseball players equal in ability to any other area of its size. Further proof is in the fact that three boys have been signed to professional contracts, these being Wendell Doss, Glen Schultz, and the late st, Joe Gore from the 1956 squad. Two boys have been namedas members of the West Virginia All-State team, Don Harless and Joe Gore receiving the honor. With seven out of the first eleven remaining with Coach School, we can look to another fine season.
