STUDENT Student Council, headed by President William Flowers, made more progress this year than in previous years. Bill and his two vice-presidents worked industriously to make Scott a better school. In the past, the Student Council was known as a “rubber stamp”. The Student Council is making every possible effort to create a new image and to voice its opinion on educational issues. The Student Council has helped with varied projects. It set plans for the Snowball, the Junior Prom, the Parental Drug Symposium, and the Student Drug Symposium. Also the Yearbook staff is very grateful to the Student Council for the help in reducing the cost of the Yearbook. The students should remember that the Student Council was what they made it. If they were active, then the Council was active, and if they were passive, so was the Student Council. 54 FIRST ROW: C. Sestak, C. Nicholas. D. Sacramento, M. Hitchins, S. McLane, K. Fazio, D. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Chobanian the faculty advisor, along with the Yearbook staff, the students of Scott High will have a treasured book of memories of their 1970-71 school year. This year’s Highlander features were the colored end sheets of the school and football stadium, colored pictures of the 1970 Prom Queen, and various shots of interest throughout the school year. In order to reduce the cost of the Highlander, magazine subscriptions and Christmas items were sold along with having two ice skating parties which always are so enjoyable to the students. The 1970 Yearbook will always be a favorite as you reflect back to your school days. STANDING: Ron Emery, Bruce Ankney, Ernest Gennaccaro. SEATED: Shirley Napolitan, Debra Sacramento, Karen Robare. 56 FIRST ROW: Jackie Cook, Fran Durso. SECOND ROW: Barbara Gottron, Keith Moore, Claire Williams, Adrienne Zoltak. TARTAN During the 1970-71 school year, a major innovation took place in the format of the Tartan paper. As a result of changing printers, the paper was reduced to a more convenient size and increased in the number of pages. In the past, the paper was published four times annually. This year, by means of several fund raising projects, the staff produced timely and informative editions each month and a special souvenir senior edition. To defray the expenses, the staff published an introductory issue without the assistance of a professional printing company. The profits from this and other projects were then used in payment of future monthly printer bills. Other projects included an autumn carwash, making and selling of football lineups, and selling of peace, love, flag and Christmas plaques. A final project, the selling of refreshments in the cafeteria during the lunch hour provided the largest profit. In fact die budget included sufficient funds to purchase souvenir pins for deserving graduating seniors. FIRST ROW: Mrs. Ondrey, L. Harris, M. Jones, E. Alston, G. Marshall, J. Hopta, B. Gottron, B. SPANISH El Club Espanol was established this year with the specific purpose of further explaining the traditions of Spanish living. The club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Duska, endeavored this instruction by having regular meetings involving Spanish life, music, and culture. Once again this year the gala fiesta de Navi-dad (Christmas) was held being highlighted by the breaking of the pinata. In addition to engaging in these traditional features, El Club Espanol through its combined selling effort, raised sufficient funds to sponsor a needy child of Spain. The members of the club truly ought to be complimented on their achievements. They were not mere, passive learners of Spanish living, but instead served as active contributors to it. FRENCH The school year was filled with entertaining, interesting, and informative activities for Scott High’s French Club, Le Cercle Francais. Fall was a busy season as tire members worked hard planning their “Battle of the Bands” dance, which would enable them to attend the Foreign Language Festival at Buhl Planetarium in February. Spring activities included a visit to Churchill High’s “French Cafe”, where students were able to taste various French foods in a Parisien atmosphere. In April, members of the club viewed slides of France and Europe, narrated by the club’s sponsor. Miss DeFalco. Finally, Le Cercle Francais spent a day of horse-backriding and picnicking to close out a busy and fun-filled year. Norma Paul, Linda McConville, Jane Stanek, Maureen Conley. 61 FIRST ROW: L. On top of the usual two concerts, they sang at the Veterans Hospital, Eastland Shopping Plaza, and several church functions. This year Larry Mayer and Bill Skvarla attended the district chorus in Waynesburg, Pa. The concert was a huge success. The Scottsmen Four, Bonnie Lassies and Scottsmen did a marvelous job too. Mrs. Page should be commended on a great job she has done in training the 65 voices. A lot of hard work was involved but we are sure that every choir member can look back with a proud feeling inside. Some of the numerous activities for fund raising were: all night bowling, a roller skating party at the Ardmore Roller Rink, and an exciting field trip to the Art International Display at Carnegie Museum in Oakland. The Art Club experienced a “new beginning” this year and we hope it represents the start of something bigger and better for the future. INGENUE The Ingenue Club, consisting of sophomore girls, was organized to acquaint them with the world around them. The club’s objectives were to improve and develop their physical and mental appearance, to supply them with an extracurricular activity in which they can participate, and to help prepare the girls for an adult world. Projects included the selling of flags to encourage the display of patriotism throughout the borough and hosting Open House at Scott during Education Week. The girls provided refreshments, name tags, and information to the attending parents. The main activity of the year was a ski trip to Seven Springs Mountain resort. Membership in the Scott High Nurses’ Club is open to all students, 9th through 12th grade, who have a genuine interest in the nursing or medical technology field. The main objectives of the Nurses Club are to foster interest in a nursing career and to provide those interested students with the latest information available. This year under the guidance of Mrs. Marilyn Proctor, advisor, meetings were held once a month, tours were made through Shadyside Hospital and McKeesport Hospital, and representatives from the Student Nursing Association of Pennsylvania and The Hospital Council on Nursing addressed the members. A dinner is scheduled as the final event of the club’s calendar during the school year. NURSES 66 FIRST ROW: J. Cook, V. Day, B. Moore, D. Sacramento, Mrs. Guerrieri, P. Stell, C. Williams, S. This year was no exception. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Richard R. Napolitan, the Varsity-Pep Club sponsored two successful bonfires during football season and promoted the Raider Cager’s efforts with the sale of Raider badges. The officers of the Varsity-Pep Club for 1970-71 were Larry Guthridge, President; Larry Connelly, Vice-President; Bobbie Mohan, Treasurer; and Cindy Novotny, Secretary. The Varsity-Pep Club planned a social function to put the finishing touches on its efforts during the school year. For the Varsity-Pep Club, 1970-71 was indeed a very good year. POLLUTION Rita Scavincky, Tony Nicoletti, Charlene Hunsicker. The Scott Anti-Pollution Club calls itself S.O.A.P., short for Student Organization Against Pollution. The job of clean-up can only begin when people sell the problem and realize they can do something about it. The club aims to help this happen by collecting and distributing information on pollution problems and ways a person can help. The first project of the year was to get trash cans in the halls so students would have somewhere to put trash, especially during the noon hour. Newspapers, magazines, and news letters from other pollution groups are used all year to gather information on pollution problems, hearings, and happenings. Some of the information gathered on pollution caused by phosphate detergents has been handed out by club members at supermarkets. Club members have been saving non-returnable bottles and tin cans for recycling through G.R.l.P. (Group for Recycling In Pittsburgh.) Planned for tire spring are clean-up sessions, an assembly, a tree-planting, and attendance at some pollution hearings. 71 72 THE ’71 RAIDERS BOTTOM ROW: W. Glaze, T. Matta, E. Haberle, M. Vargo, W. The Scott High football campaign started with a bang by winning their first four games against some tough competition. Looking ahead to the battle of the unbeaten’s against Beaver Area, the Raiders were tied by Bishop Boyle. The Beaver game was played in ankle deep mud which slowed the offense, but Beaver was fortunate to put a score on the board. This was followed by a one-sided loss to New Brighton and climaxed the season with a close victory over rival Braddock. The outstanding offensive players were Bill Pekarcik, Tim Murtaza, Jim Crossey, and Bill Cromer. On the defense, the stalwarts were Keith Moore and Jesse Williams. The outstanding sophomore for the ’70 season was William Glaze. The players and coaches should be commended for a great 5 and 2 record and a lone loss. 1970 Football Season SCOTT 14 West Mifflin North 8 6 Mon-Valley Catholic 0 20 Jeannette 10 36 Duquesne 20 0 Bishop Boyle 0 0 Beaver 6 14 New Brighton 37 6 Braddock 0 74 75 Billy Flowers Nick Golia Ed Habcrle Ken Kasprisin Tom Malta 76 Keith Moore, Co-Captain Timmy Murtaza Bill Pekarcik, Co-Captain Guy Ricci Gary Granchi, Manager Bill Torbich Mark Vargo Jesse Williams Max Zidanic 77 Kick the habit. MAJORETTES Under the leadership of Head Majorette Karen Robare and Co-Head Patti Weigold, the routines for the half-time entertainment during football season were well performed by the 1970-71 majorettes. Under the direction of Mrs. Lee Kumer, the majorettes displayed good showmanship and ability. Their new uniforms sparkled under the Scott High Stadium lights while routines were being performed to such popular songs as “Sweet Georgia Brown”, “Song of a Preacher Man”, and “Fever”. On their return from camp, Karen and Patti brought back several new ideas used in their preparation for the half-time shows. Long, tedious hours were spent teaching the other girls new twirls and steps for pep rallies and football games. Time and hard work is necessary to march with the precision that our majorettes so ably did. Congratulations on a job well done! They performed at all home games plus an away game at Bishop Boyle. Hours were spent working on music for the spring concert. The band played such selections as “Fantasy on American Sailing Songs”, “Dedicatory Overture”, “California Dreaming,” “Monday, Monday,” and several other light selections. Skip Brown was featured on a trumpet solo entitled “Trumpet Song”. The Scott High stage band was featured on the concert. BASKETBALL The 1970-71 Varsity Basketball Season provided many moments of excitement and despair. The team started the season by winning six of their first seven exhibition games. During the Christmas holidays, the Scott Cagers were the champions of the Mt. Lebanon Tournament with two brilliant performances. Alex Johnson and Keith Moore were named to the All-Tournament team with Keith taking the outstanding player trophy with his great desire and determination. Into the regular season, the Raiders played a tremendous game at Clairton only to lose by 2 points. The second half of the season played a major part where the team suffered two setbacks at the hands of McKeesport and Clairton. The season was highlighted by the all-around play of Alex Johnson, Bill Flowers, Keith Moore. Alex scored a total of 498 points in his senior year to give him a 3 year total of 1146 points, second in the all-time scoring record. Bill Flowers amassed 359 points and Keith Moore scoring 249 points. Alex was named to the first team Section 5 All-Stars, All-State honorable mention, and a member of the West Penn All-Stars. Bill Flowers was named to the honorable mention team of the Section 5 All-Stars. The loss by graduation of these three will leave a big gap in the varsity but Coach Zilko is looking for big things from Daryl Barkley and Alvin Berkley, plus help from the junior varsity. 1970-71 VARSITY SCORES SCOTT OPPONENT 80 Edgewood 52 69 Central Catholic 68 101 Swissvale 83 81 Sto-Rox 73 48 Farrell 60 84 Oliver 34 90 Turtle Creek 50 47 Valley 35 62 Mt. JUNIOR VARSITY The 1970-71 Junior Varsity Basketball team completed the season with a 9-8, won-lost record. Throughout most of the season, it was a see-saw affair with the team not able to initiate a constant drive. With a little luck, the boys under Mr. Napoiitan could have had a .750 season. The boys showed a lot of hustle and desire to win and some of their losses were not decided until the final whistle. Showing a lot of moxie were the scoring punch of Jerry Parsee, Ed Overby, Larry Randall, and Kevin Carter. Playing a strong board game with Overby and Randall was sophomore. Bob Frayer. Backing this aggregation up when help was needed was Collins Thompson, Keith Davis and Dan Ondrey. Coach Napoiitan feels that some of these boys will be playing varsity ball come next year. 102 OPPONENT Edgewood 34 Central Catholic 70 Swissvale 59 Sto-Rox 62 Farrell 56 Oliver 30 Turtle Creek 31 Duquesne 53 McKeesport 60 Clairton 65 South Allegheny 49 M unhall 36 West Mifflin North 67 Duquesne 44 McKeesport 46 Clairton 55 Munhall 51 SCOTT 70 55 71 73 50 78 58 42 32 44 44 52 62 51 47 29 59 ICE SKATING 901 Jeff Donato Solo Ralph Burrelli Solo Beverly Borgoun Accompaniment QUEEN AND HER COURT: Deborah Sacramento, Sandra McLane, Cynthia Novotny, Cheryl Evanega, Connie Rice. SNOWBALL February 26, 1971 marked an eventful evening for the students of Scott High School. This was an evening on which the “Snowball” was held and the couples danced to the music of The Levatations. Efforts of the Student Council produced a masterpiece in decorating the gym for the occasion. The important part of the evening was the crowning of the queen by the Student Council President, William Flowers. This year’s queen was Cynthia Novotny, who was presented with a bouquet of longstemmed roses. Immediately following the event, all the couples went to Johnny Garneau’s Smorgasbord to eat and the evening was concluded by all night bowling at the Miracle Lanes in Monroeville. 108 THE QUEEN: Cynthia Novotny. 110 Ill FIRST ROW: M. The season started with three successive league wins before their initial defeat at the hands of a strong Churchill club. The team then lost their playoff contention due to some loose pitching and playing in successive losses to Swissvale and Penn Hills. Coach Thomas had a strong hitting nucleus with Bill Flowers leading the hitting array with a .530 batting average followed by Don Exum at .440, Jim Crossey at .390 and Ed Haberle at .340. With the graduation of four starting seniors, these holes should be aptly filled with the return of Jim Crossey, Mike Ufnar, Van Hicks, Abe Eberhardt, Bruce Blednick and Bill Glaze.
