All of these activities, ranging from athletics to music, require hard work and determination on the part of the students. The action revolved around the gridiron, in the gym, out on the golf links, or on the baseball diamond. While the athletes supplied the action, the members of the band, the majorettes, the cheerleaders and the pep club supplied the team with spirit and the fans with entertainment. Special events such as the Snowball, the Spring Concert, and Commencement gave the musically inclined and the artistically inclined of the Art Club a chance to show their ability. These events climaxed a year of hard work and preparation for members of the chorus, choir, and Orchestra. The foreign language students participated in the French and Spanish Clubs. The editions of the TARTAN and HIGHLANDER gave the students a chance to express themselves freely. The members of the HIGHLANDER Staff would like to extend our thanks to those students who participated in these events which helped to make Scott a better school. 63 TOP ROW- R Burelli, B. The 1968-69 Student Council was headed by Community President Herbert McDowell, with the able assistance of Stephen Zilko vice-president, Paula Shubock, secretary, and Lynn Fritziua, treasurer. They and the other members supervised various campaigns and events, such as the Harvest and Spring Dances, the skating party, the Snowball and the Prom. This year’s Council was perhaps the first to introduce the interests of the entire student body, and was rewarded with an extremely profitable year. 64 65 BACK ROW H. Levy, J. Regan, M. Committees were formed with seniors as heads, and a noon schedule was planned to give everyone a chance to participate in the production. The yearbook staff had a very successful Christmas wrapping paper campaign, due in large part to the inclusion of sophomores and freshmen. The magazine sale also added necessary funds, as did a license plate sale and a roller skating party. We wish to thank Mr. Chobanian for his wonderful job as organizer, business committee manager, and advisor to the editors, the photographers and the committee heads. 66 67 68 BACK ROW - F. Kranik, R. The Tartan, student body newspaper, had a particu-larly profitable year under the supervision of Faculty Advisor Clarence Petro and Editor-in-Chief Andrea Ogrodnik. Hundreds of subscriptions were sold at a rate of seventy-five cents, these funds were supplemented by the sale of game programs and the operation of a lunch time concession stand. This year along with regular features many controversial articles appeared concerning neighborhood problems. An interview was conducted with Pennsylvania Senator Clark, a University of Pittsburgh seminarion, journalism was attended, and a number of current movies were reviewed. The year was climaxed with a third place award in a competition for school newspapers sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh. Members of the staff received pins for their dedication and hard work. 69 FUTURE NURSES CLUB The Future Nurses’ Club brings together students interested in nursing and health careers, in order that they might share their interests, explore opportunities and requirements in the various Fields, grow as individuals by working together, and learn about community life in which they will soon participate as informed citizens. This year under the guidance of Miss Fisher, faculty advisor, and Patty McConnell, president, the club was able to tour several local hospitals. TOP ROW: J. Rice, A. Choma. C. Rice. A. Duray, A. Areas providing the “vocabulary” for creative statements included drawing, aqua-media and oil painting, graphics, analytic and synthetic sculpture, ceramics, and experimental synthetic media. Art students, via the Art Club, added to their individual feats by transforming ordinary backgrounds into beautiful, unique, and admirable settings for the various seasonal programs, the senior play, educational and social activities. The Spot light on the Artist feature, sharing art student achievements in exhibition for non-art students, radiated numerous professional facets of promising young artists. The Art Club began an additional recognition for artistic accomplishment this year. It initiated an award for the student making the greatest contribution to Art and to Scott High by way of art. Selection was made by art club members who represent a valid cross-section of the entire student body. It is hoped that this award will become an annual event and that it will maintain the high standard set forth in this years criteria for selection. 71 TOP ROW: B. Strang, R. Joschak. R. Matey, R. The Scott High Marching Band, under the direction of Mrs. Ardith McCloy, initiated the school year by preparing for the football season, which involved the home games plus a trip to Donora. The band started working on music for the Christmas assembly which was followed by the Annual Spring Music Festival on April 18, 1969. The band concluded the school year by marching in the Memorial Day Parade and the North Braddock Fireman’s Parade. This year Scott had two outstanding representatives in the Carnegie Mellon P.M.E.A. Honors Band, which is a select group of musicians from Western Pennsylvania. Chosen from Scott High were Vicki Shephard and Herb McDowell. Herb was also selected for the District IV P.M.E.A. Band and the Regional State Band at Ellwood City. We extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. McCloy and members of our band for a fine job. 80 81 BACK ROW: A. Dunahay, S. Carney, R. Zezza, V. Shepherd. D. Tedious hours were spent in teaching the majorettes their various routines in preparation for the half-time shows. We would like to extend our appreciation to the majorettes for their whole hearted participation at the football games and pep rallies. The girls also marched in local parades such as the Fireman’s Parade, the Kennywood Fall Fantasy, and the annual Memorial Day Parade. Their pep and vitality helped to increase the enthusiasm at pep rallies and games. Under head cheerleader Diane Teufen, and co-head Diane Drabik. the girls began practicing in the early months of summer and continued practicing into the school year to protect their cheers. Many of these cheers were old favorites, but there were also many new cheers. Some of the new cheers which were institued were quick rhythm cheers and cheers which had various mounts. In addition to cheering the girls also performed shaker routines at half-time during the football game. All of their practicing was not in vain, as was displayed when the cheerleaders went into action at the first football game. The cheerleading squad would like to extend their thanks to the student body for the great spirit and backing they showed. Scott High School is proud of this year’s cheerleaders for displaying such loyalty to their school. Congratulations to the 1968-69 cheerleaders on a job well done. 84 TOP ROW B. Vasko-MIDDLE ROW R. We attempt to provide activities which best satisfy the students needs, ideals, and abilities to the fullest. The major sports, which are football, basketball, baseball, and golf, are played with utmost desire, courage, dedication, and alertness. Football, which is the favorite of the student body, requires great physical and mental attributes. Our head coach, Mr. Rogel, is one of the best examples of physical fitness in the coaching field. His technical background is excellent and his great desire to excel in his chosen field is a tonic for our players. Golf is coached by Mr. Robert Dunlap and Mr. Bernard Oriss, and we are endeavoring to help the boys who have ability along this particular line. Basketball draws the enthusiasm and support of the students during winter months. The team, always known for its hustle and never say die attitude, was no exception this year as they were guided by the capable hand of Mr. Zilko. Baseball season has the misfortune of arriving at the same time the rain does. Nevertheless, the team manages to do an outstanding job under the guidance of Mr. Charles Thomas. The athletic traditions at Scott High School are in young and capable hands and we are going to remain' a first rate power in athletics. 87 a • TOP ROW: Mr. E. McMullen. Mr. R. Serrapede. Mr. F. The Donora Dragons slid by the Raiders, 7 to 6 in the best defensive performances by both teams. From then on the Raiders were hot and cold; winning two and losing three. Though the team didn’t have a great record, they outscored the opposition 180 to 145. The scoring was provided by senior Jim Berkley and junior halfbacks Scottie Quick, Don Hicks, and Bob Byerly. The quarterbacking was performed by Dale Cromling and Bill Zigarovich with great lineplay by Robert Johnson, Mark Gefert, and Denton Hunter. Graduation will leave holes at some important positions but we hope the underclassmen will be able to fill these positions capably. 88 1968 FOOTBALL SEASON SCOTT OPPONENT 39 New Brighton 13 32 Rochester 13 6 Donora 7 Ellwood City 26 53 Monaca 13 25 Munhall 19 12 Beaver Area 19 Duquesne 35 89 Doran Bowser Missing: James Berkley Frank Kutnansky 93 FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Paul Sylves, Kerry Heider. Losing on the road to Penn Hills, 57-84, put the Raiders in a section play-off at the Pitt Field House. It was a long night for both teams. Although the Raiders led at half time 26-22, Penn Hills retaliated in the second half to defeat Scott 57 to 53. One of the outstanding players this year was Steve (Snuffy) Zilko, who set a one game high of 44 points against Oakmont. Zilko’s 1361 career points broke his brother George’s record of 1135 points. Steve was named to the first team of 8-A All Stars, fourth team of the State All Stars, and played for the West Penn All Stars in the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic. Steve was also top scorer for the year with 578 points, followed by Phil DeRiggi with 331 points and Alex Johnson with 319 points. DeRiggi and Johnson were both named for the second team of 8-A All Stars with Denton Hunter receiving honorable mention. The fifth member of the starting club deserving honorable mention was Reggie Flowers, the Raider’s playmaker. The teams batting power was sparked by senior lettermen Reggie Flowers, Bill Zigarovich, Rich Csukas, and versatile Dale Cromling. The moundsmen were led by Dale Cromling, who had a no-hit, seven strikeout performance against Churchill; Rich Csukas, a fine senior with a 3 win 0 loss record in league play; and Senior Dan Fantaski. Scott High School is no exception to this constant change as can be seen by the numerous special events that take place during the school year. Such things as Ice Skating and Roller Skating parties are events that everyone in the school is invited to attend. The results are bumps and bruises, but there is always pleasure and fun. From the beginning til the end of the year, the music department works industriously to present a Christmas Concert, a Choral Concert, and a Spring Festival of Music. College Night is an annual event that is open to all who would like to learn about different colleges and it helps them to make a decision about the college they hope to attend. Many pep rallies and a bonfire kept the school spirit high throughout the athletic seasons. A harvest dance was held which started people thinking of the coming Snowball. BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Leo Campbell Mr. Raymond Goga Mr. Stephen Pendro Secretary 149 It would be folly to think that with graduation one’s learning is completed and conclusively ended, that one can relax and take things easy, forgetting about knowledge. This is far from being the case. We are living in a world which is changing so drastically, we must change too or be left behind, for if a person graduates today and stops learning tomorrow, he will be uneducated the day after. The revolutionary changes being wrought today result from the rapid expansion of knowledge in many fields. From the most infinitesimal reaches of the atom to the most remote reaches of the universe, humans are discovering, classifying, recording, and computerizing new information at an astronomical rate. Scientific knowledge is being developed at such a fantastic speed that some experts believe we are now acquiring as much new information in three months as we acquired in all the years of human history up to now. Incredible as this seems, these experts have their computers to prove their point. It is impossible to even faintly imagine any end to new discoveries of knowledge. Thus it behooves us to acquire and apply this knowledge. It is a monumental task but one which we must recognize if we are to carve out our own individual niches in civilization. Dr. Clay Graduates and students of Scott High School: We are all constantly confronted with tasks to perform and obligations to fulfill. Whether we are members of the world of work, graduating seniors who are entering this adult world, or undergraduates whose primary responsibilities are academic, we all face the same basic problems. There are goals to be attained and how can we best rally our energies to reach them. Frequently we are mislead by the assumption that financial rewards, or in the case of students, grades, automatically guarantee the maximum of productive energy. The greater the reward the more effective our labor. Recent investigation, however, has proven this to be an invalid assumption. High wages, or good grades, are great on payday; but their basic stimulus is soon dissipated when our funds are depleted in a few short days. In addition most of us will never earn enough to satisfy our continuously growing needs and desires. We must then seek our stimulation from sources other than financial rewards or grades. It has been shown that such stimulation can come from the realm of psychological energy. This is the energy we derive from the sense of accomplishment and grows as we develop our self-esteem. The knowledge that we are making significant contributions in our daily activities and that we are valued by others, opens reservoirs of energy which otherwise we would not know existed. These are basic feelings which are with us everyday, and we can constantly refer to them for the energy we will need to meet our many and varied responsibilities. So to the graduating seniors and undergraduates, I urge you to consider these sources of energy. I’m sure if you become aware of their potential and develop them that you will find your tasks not so formidable and attack them with the energy necessary for success. 150 Members of the Class of 1969, as you leave the portals of your Alma Mater for the last time and take your place in the adult world, may I express a thought on loyalty. True loyalty is never a negative thing. It is a positive, wholehearted and out-flowing devotion to something beyond your private self. It is bigger than you are. In the long run, no one can be secure or successful or happy if he lives only for himself. We grow by giving the best of ourselves to something we believe in, heart and soul. This is the essence of loyalty. In terms of this definition, how loyal arc you? Here is a simple way to find out. Below are some things in which nearly everyone believes: 1. Your family 2. The organization for which you work 3. Your community 4. Your church 5. Your country Now put this list aside. Then take it out again a few days or weeks or months from now. When you do, ask yourself this question: “Since first reading this page, have I so lived that these five things are stronger, better, and finer because of me?” If you can answer a truthful yes, then you will know that you understand the meaning of loyalty - and, along with it, the secret of true happiness. My best wishes. The thing I most enjoy about being an assistant to the principal is the pep and enthusiasm that the Scott High kids display. What 1 most dislike is to see a student show indifference and disrespect for the school rules. Gladly 1 can say, Ninety-eight per cent will co-operate; for this I am grateful.” Mr. Conroy 151 GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING James J. Oriss Juniata College Indiana University of Pennsylvania Interests: Athletics, Music, Reading. While the primary purpose of the school is the teaching of the various subjects, the counselor contributes by providing services which directly support instruction. The counselor has the responsibility of helping students help themselves through counseling, disseminating educational and occupational information, testing, scheduling, placements, research, and public relations. The school counselor, in addition to helping students, also works closely with members of the administrative and teaching staff to the end that all of school’s resources are directed toward meeting the needs of all pupils. Through personal counseling, speakers, from schools and industry, bulletin boards, and group discussions, the students are given an opportunity to assist themsleves in many areas. This year saw the appearance of the Guidance Grapevine, which the department plans to continue and expand, offering educational and vocational information. The department offers its congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1969. Robert R.
