Palyo, A. Fedor. Sco-tt (Jtarbo-ttk This year's Highlander Staff came under the direction of Mr. Gene Geracimos who filled the position vacated by last year's faculty advisor, Mr. William Rodgers. Along with Mr. Geracimos came many changes. One change was the acquisition of a room in the Administration Building for use as the Highlander office. In previous years, money for the yearbook was raised mainly from the operating of a refreshment stand at the football and basketball games and the selling of magazine subscriptions. However, this year the refreshment stand at games was run by the Parents Teachers' Association which donated its profit to the yearbook. Other means of raising money were the sale of wrapping paper at Christmas time and the sale of magazine subscriptions. As in the past, we delayed in putting out the book so we could include graduation, and, as a result, the book came out late. However, we are sure that it will serve as a remembrance of your high school years which you will look back upon as the best time in your life. 58 59 Tarim Ofa T This year the Tartan's format has been changed somewhat by new headlines. Instead of headlines on bold print, they came in script and slanted italic print. Editor positions have changed from single posts to associate posts, and instead of only one editor-in-chief two girls, Michele Petrovsky, former feature editor, and Linda Flummer, last year's editor-in-chief, were appointed. Art editor, Carole Granchi, changed the total look of the front page also by designing a new banner for across the page. This and the other art work added to part of its new look. The months that the Tartan was issued were changed to December, February, March, and May. Two were issued in February to give the feature spot to the annual Snowball. In March the newspaper held a party at which time the pins were distributed to the following senior members: Vicki Zapach, Eileen Wilhelm, Sandra Wertz, RoseannGoydoscik, Roseann Bryer, Annetta Fedor, Anita Alston, and Bonnie Bridge. Membership on the staff this was twenty, all but two of these being seniors. FIRST ROW: M. Kohut, M. Petrovsky, D. Russell, S. Wertz, R. Bryer, C. Granchi, D. Levy. SECOND ROW: A. Fedor, L. Student Councd Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Rudolph Celigoi and the leadership of Community President Don Koncsol, this year's Student Council made accomplishments in other activities beside the usual perennial ones. The new plans included an ice skating party, and an after graduation party in June. Besides these, the council also made arrangements for the Prom, Snowball, Pep Rallies, dances, and assemblies. The 1966-67 Student Council wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to all the students without whose support the Student Council could not have functioned as well as it did. 62 tL t a r t a r 8 t 8 The Future Nurses Club brings together students interested in careers in nursing and health, in order to share their interests, to explore opportunities and requirements in these fields, to grow as individuals by working together, and to learn about the community life in which they soon will participate as informed citizens. This year under the supervision of Mrs. Lamberty and Miss Fisher, faculty advisors, and Kathy Zona, president, members became better acquainted with the medical fields. Plans for tours and other activities were made during formal and enjoyable meetings held twice a month. To help the members make their choice on a school of nursing, the club toured several surrounding hospitals. Since it was not possible to tour all the hospitals suggested, a bulletin library was started by the president. From the profits made by selling candy bars, a hobby horse was purchased for Braddock Hospital's Pediatric Department, membership cards were obtained and membership pins were given to all new members. At the end of the year a banquet was also held. Our adopted grandmothers at the G.A.R. Home are still being visited twice a month by club members. Due to the members' faithfulness and the officers' efforts the Future Nurses Club has become more successful. FIRST ROW: S. Jack, C. Giovenazzo, S. Sepesy, V. Coates, B. Pepper, D. A very successful Christmas party was held in the gaily decorated cafeteria. The highlight of the evening came when Frank Gamrat, dressed as Santa Claus, broke the pinata. Our Spanish Newspaper, The Bull’s Eye, also had a successful year. Articles were published in both Spanish and in English. Spanish bingo was played at some of the meetings with prizes given to the winners. These are just a few of the activities that the members of the Spanish Club participate throughout the year. k FIRST ROW: N. Pascuzzi, P. Shubock, S. Carney, G. Pelrovay, J. McCoy, R. Bryer, C. It is an established fact that students, wishing to master any foreign language, will progress much more quickly by being organized into a group that can commonly be called a club or as in this case, the French Club. We take great pride in having our own club where we can enjoy the many splendid features of language study. In a group of this sort the obstacles that confront a foreign language student can easily be mastered by being part of an organization that enables us to participate as a group in having field trips and also to develop good basic expressions that are common in all foreign languages. Our French Club at Scott, strives to give students that wish to advance in this language a proper foundation so that he or she can easily adjust themselves when and if these students wish to pursue this language in a college or university. It is very gratifying to know that our French students at Scott have indeed all the benefits that includes very good instructors and the all around friendship that is necessary to having a great French Club. 65 FIRST ROW: D. C1 t (U The Art Club is an organization designed to further the education of the students wishing to go into the field of art. Most of the students have an active interest in art and should profit by it immensely. The responsibilities of the Art Club are numerous. A few of the things we've accomplished are scenery and props for the senior play, decorations for all programs, holidays, and events, including Christmas, the Snow Ball, and decorating the mansion. They have goneon fieldtrips to various places, had parties, and participated in art contests. In the end, even after all of the hard work, the students found it to be a lot of fun. 66 FIRST ROW: A. Wilma held the office of President of the Folk Club through her junior and senior years. The club in recent years has put on several fine programs for our student body and its members hope to keep up its fine standards. This year's senior officers are: Rose Tori-Vice President, Pat Kovacic-Secretary, who later was forced to give up her office to Richard Sweeney, a sophomore with well planned future ambitions. Theresa Strang-Treasurer and Brenda Marshall, a junior who acts as our program chairlady. In this school term of 1966-67 there are forty members in the club of whom all are exceptionally good singers. Our main attraction this year occurred in late November of '66. It was a show sponsored by Mayor Thomas Curran of North Braddock and his Action Committee. The show was entitled Hootenanny '66 and was held at the Scott High Auditorium for the residents of North Braddock. It was a near successful show that brought the house down — in more ways than one. The price, of course was free. I have great hopes for the Folk Club and I hope it will continue to grow bigger, and better in the future years. 67 The 1966-67 Pep Club under the leadership of President Tony Rizza consisted of an enthusiastic group of Scott High students. Its members were the heart of the cheering sections at both the rallies and the games. They were responsible for the many signs and decorations plastered through the halls and in the auditorium. The Pep Club was also responsible for the several skits performed at the pep rallies. It was also important in organizing and sponsoring the annual Bonfire which was held on the night before the Du-quesne game. Although the Pep Club showed its primary enthusiasm during the football season, it continued to be the center of the cheering section during the basketball season. The following are the names and offices of the people who helped Tony lead the organization: Vice President..................Joe Petruska Secretary.....................Virginia Darby Treasurer..............................Linda Pintar Sergeants-at-Arms . . Rose Tori, Pete Sylves They would like to thank everyone for their fine cooperation and consideration they showed during the past season. 68 M. Me Lane, C. Giovenazzo, M. Kohut, M. Borgony, L. The largest organization was the Mixed Chorus, which was open to any student with a desire to sing and a serious interest in music. The A Cappella Choir, composed of sixty selected singers, held the responsibility of representing the department to the public; and this year was a busy one for the choir, as their appearance was requested by numerous local organizations. We can be proud of this group, for they performed with dignity and spirit on every occasion. The birth of the Scottsmen , the male ensemble, heralded a new tradition at Scott. This already popular group - along with all the other choruses - promises exciting things to come from within our choral department in the future. 72 MIXED CHORUS MIXED CHORUS AND CHOIR 73 74 75 Scheduling problems caused the 1966 Football season to be one of frustration. Our team was forced to compete with some of the largest Class AA schools in the district and the fact that we lacked sufficient Class A games to be eligible for the championship took a great deal of luster off the season before it even began. However, as usual our boys did their best and represented our school with pride. After a 38-6 romp over Allegheny, they traveled to Hempfield to drop a thrilling 46-18 encounter with the team that was later to compete in the Class AA championship. Another strong AA opponent, West Mifflin North, came to Scott and hung on for a 19-7 victory over the Raiders. Mud and a team which was to go undefeated for the season enabled West Mifflin South to take the next encounter by a score of 15-8. The next two Class A opponents, South Allegheny and Munhall went down in order 18-0 and 33-18, and in spite of a thrilling second half AA Trinity managed to deal the Raiders another narrow defeat, 21-19. The season closed with a disappointing defeat to Duquesne 33-18, but over all it was a good year for a team that always did its best and gained the respect of every team they played. Roseanna Spizzirri Head Majorette 88 On Friday, November 18, 1966, the graduating class of 1967 presented a two-act comedy entitled, ’’The Mouse That Roared” by Leonard Wibberley and Christopher Sergei. The plot of ’’The Mouse That Roared” centered around the microscopic country of Grand Fenwick that is on the verge of destruction because of a cheap imitation of its main export, wine, by a company in the United States. The Duchy of Grand Fenwick decides to go to war with the United States with the intention of losing so that the United States will send aid and technical assistance to rehabilitate the country. The Duchess Glorianna XII makes Tully Bascom, a one time forest ranger, head of the expeditionary forces. With a rented fishing boat and a handful of soldiers with bows and arrows, Tully Bascom lands in New York City. The men of Grand Fenwick capture a professor from Columbia University and a powerful bomb he has made. So with the prisoners and the Q-bomb, which now makes Grand Fenwick the most powerful nation on earth, Tully returns to Grand Fenwick. The story ends happily. Tully vows to use the Q-bomb only to stop tyranny from spreading throughout the world; the United States gives the Duchy of Grand Fenwick one million dollars in aid, and Tully Bascom is engaged to marry the Duchess Gloriana. A special thanks should be given to Mr. Robert Pior-ier and his assistant Mr. Daniel Bugle for their time, effort, and above all their patience for making ”The Mouse That Roared a tremendous success. Kathy Zona, as the Duchess Gloriana XU, and Joel Gusky, as Tully Bascom, deserve special congratulations for their fine performances in the leading roles. 92 93 95 97 KNEELING: N. Hicks, S. Zilko, C. The varsity basketball team came through with a winning season this year as Coach Oriss's Raiders finished with a 13-7 record. Starting off with a 74-66 win at Edgewood and then a 71-68 win over Turtle Creek, the Raiders finished with a 5-3 record for the exhibition season. Getting off to a slow start in the new Section 8 competition, the varsity managed to pull out a 3-3 first half record. In the second half, the better experienced team caught fire and whipped through the section losing only to Penn Hills, the section champ. The big win was a 63-53 victory overWilkinsburg which gave the varsity a second place spot with an 8-4 record. The outstanding players for the Raiders were Captain Larry Swartz, Nate Hicks, Cardie Watkins, Steve Zilko, and Jim Berkely. Bob Riley and Bill Tomasic also gave the team much help. The future for Scott Hieh basketball looks bright with only Swartz and Riley leaving and some good freshman and sophomore talent coming up. 96 1966-1967 Varsity Basketball Record OPPONENT SCOTT Edgewood 66 74 Turtle Creek 68 71 South Hills 81 76 Oakmont 75 77 S. They continued through the first half of the league season rather slowly. They only managed to beat two teams, Gateway and Plum, and lost to four, the worst being the defeat at Wilkinsburg by a score of 80-60. However, the JV's came on strong in the second half. They made a clean sweep of the six section teams, the big win being the one over Wilkinsburg at home by a score of 57-55. The team managed to pull outa respectable record of ll-8onthe year. During the evening the couples danced to the music of Mr. Dallas' Combo. Combined efforts of the Student Council and Art Club transformed the gym into a masterpiece for the evening. The important part of the evening was the crowning of the queen by the Community President, Donald Koncsol. This year's queen was Kathy Zona. Don presented her with a bouquet of longstemmed roses, and then they led off the next dance. Using the starting shortstop, Jim Jones, on the pitching mound, instead of his normal position he won three games in a row. He had a no hit game against Churchill among the three victories. In the hot streak, Scott won 4 games in a row before dropping a 1 to 0 game to Penn Hills the section champ. Scott was tie for first place at the time. The team lost one more game before winning the last two games of the season to finish with a 6 won and 4 lost record. This was good enough for second place. Penn Hills won the section with a 7 win and 3 lost record. Three seniors areleavingthe team. They are Jim Jones, Joe Brannagan, and Don Koncsol. An outstanding job was turned in by the pitching and catching combination of Jones and Brannagan. Jones had a 4 win and 1 lost record and Brannagan caught in every game. The '68 season should find the team with experience. Scott could be shooting for the section lead next year. 1967 SCOTT BASEBALL RECORD SCOTT OPPONENT Penn Hills 0 4 Wilkinsburg 0 8 Churchill 4 1 Swissvale 3 2 Braddock 6 1 Penn Hills 0 1 Wilkinsburg 6 2 Churchill 1 5 Swissvale 5 5 Braddock 6 2 120 JAMES JONES 121 122 Glenn Konvalinka LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Dunlap, Coach; G. Flummer SCOTTSMEN A tradition established last year was continued on April 14 with the second annual All-School Choral Festival, ”A Time For Singing”. Once again, the Elementary Schools Chorus and the Junior High Chorus joined in this endeavor, which included over 400 students. Each chorus had a beautifully appropriate backdrop, created with the help of Mr. Wilt and the efforts of many chorus members. An art display by Mr. Wilt's students provided interesting viewing in the lobby. Our Mixed Chorus, accompanied by Scott McNulty, was beautifully attired and featured such selections as Everything's Coming Up Roses and the theme song from”Dr. Zhivago . The Girls'Ensemble presented a medley from The Fantasticks . The A Cappella Choir, also very formally dressed, sang such favorites as They Call the Wind Maria , A Summer Place , and People . The highlight of the concert was the appearance of the new Scottsmen , clad in white dinner jackets, who delighted the audience with such things as Yesterday and Born Free . Featured senior soloists were Scott McNulty, who sang a selection from Marne , and James Bradley and Michele Petrovsky, who joined forces for a rendition of Joshue Accompaniments were provided by Rosanna Suppa, Ellen Malus, and James Bradley -with an able assist from Mr. John Coddington. The entire department united their efforts for the finale. America the Beautiful , with brass ensemble. The concert closed with a beautiful rendition of our Alma Mater. 124 FANTISTICKS George H. A major change brought about by the Prom Committee was permitting Scott High students to bring students from other high schools. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Judy Wessel as Prom Queen by Pat Kovacic, 1966 Prom Queen. Judy was then presented with a bouquet of long stemmed red roses by Community President Don Koncsol, and they led off the next dance. This year the court consisted of Donna Rudowsky, JoAnn Quinten, Mary Bassani, and Monica Tierney. After an enjoyable evening at Edgewood Country Club, the couples went to the Holiday Inn for dinner and more dancing. 126 The Queen and Her Court 133 134 139 140 142 JOSEPH BRANNAGAN Athlete of the Year JOEL GUSKY Firemen's Senatorial Scholarship U.S.W.
