The Superintendent’s Message Fellow Students There are those who would have our seniors believe that they are graduating into a world destined to be blown into eternity in a single blast. Others will tell them that they are embarking upon a sea of unemployment in a world of decaying economic opportunity. This is typical of the thinking of those who misread the past, misinterpret the present, and misunderstand the future. You, the members of the Senior Class of 1964, should be eternally grateful that, by mere chance, you were born into a nation in which the great freedoms which we enjoy have made possible the highest standard of living of any nation in the world. Yours is a generation which will live to see the dawn of a new century. When the bells toll the opening of the new century, will you be able to say that the later years of the dying century were years of unparalleled economic opportunity or will you find that the long dark night of barbarism has descended upon us, without even a star of hope. It can be either. This I believe, is The Challenge of Your Generation. Sincerely yours, Curtis J. Clay Superintendent of Schools 11

SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL This I believe; Education is that process which helps the individual to take his rightful place in a society, of which he is automatically an integral part. The process does not make for equality—it cannot—for to begin with, the participants possess individual differences representing inequality and, to be sure, their perception of and their reception to the many and varied offerings encountered in the process differ, considerably. This inequality is good, for mediocrity and standardization are not the most acceptable ends for measuring progress. Pursue your education, yes, but see that in your pursuance you really acquire it, for education is an experience and not a tool. At the completion of your work at Scott High School, I would direct each of you to search yourself and see that you are not found wanting in the real values that make for a productive life. My congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1964. A. G. Rensko ANDREW G. RENSKO 12
