2 Editors George Prokop Robert Wilhelm Associate Editor Betsy Walter Business Manager John Fruhwald Secretary Susan Ratica Treasurer Suzanne Hatok 6 6 Members of the Scott High School administration have made it possible for the students of Scott High to obtain an education of the finest quality and to be able to deal with the changes in today’s world after they graduate. Although many students have not met and do not know the members of the School Board as well as they do the faculty, they can easily see the effects of the Board’s work throughout Scott High. The members of the administration have worked out an educational system by which all Scott High students can benefit via the many and varied subjects offered them through the various courses available. Through their efforts they have turned Scott High into a school which is able to send its students out to work smoothly alongside people from different walks of life. The Board continuously strives to better the schools of the North Brad-dock district in order to help all students. Thanks to the School Board all students have the opportunity to further their educational abilities and to improve their skills. The Highlander would like to present the members of the administration in the following pages and thank them for their efforts and farsightedness in guiding, in particular, the students of Scott High. 7 Congratulations to the 1964 Seniors PRESIDENT, THOMAS GRIBBIN SECRETARY, EMI DIO GUERRIERI BOARD OF EDUCATION WILLIAM SARVER EDWARD HOUSE MICHAEL CHIZMAR JOSEPH SULEY STEPHEN PENDRO ANTON BIGMAN SOLICITOR 9 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS The Superintendent’s Message Fellow Students There are those who would have our seniors believe that they are graduating into a world destined to be blown into eternity in a single blast. Others will tell them that they are embarking upon a sea of unemployment in a world of decaying economic opportunity. This is typical of the thinking of those who misread the past, misinterpret the present, and misunderstand the future. You, the members of the Senior Class of 1964, should be eternally grateful that, by mere chance, you were born into a nation in which the great freedoms which we enjoy have made possible the highest standard of living of any nation in the world. Yours is a generation which will live to see the dawn of a new century. When the bells toll the opening of the new century, will you be able to say that the later years of the dying century were years of unparalleled economic opportunity or will you find that the long dark night of barbarism has descended upon us, without even a star of hope. It can be either. This I believe, is The Challenge of Your Generation. Sincerely yours, Curtis J. Clay Superintendent of Schools 11 SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL This I believe; Education is that process which helps the individual to take his rightful place in a society, of which he is automatically an integral part. The process does not make for equality—it cannot—for to begin with, the participants possess individual differences representing inequality and, to be sure, their perception of and their reception to the many and varied offerings encountered in the process differ, considerably. This inequality is good, for mediocrity and standardization are not the most acceptable ends for measuring progress. Pursue your education, yes, but see that in your pursuance you really acquire it, for education is an experience and not a tool. At the completion of your work at Scott High School, I would direct each of you to search yourself and see that you are not found wanting in the real values that make for a productive life. My congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1964. A. G. Rensko ANDREW G. RENSKO 12 ADMINISTRATION RUDOLPH J. CELIGOI ROBERT R BOWMAN Guidance Counselor Secretarial MRS. TERRY PETRO Staff MRS. Knowing that each student is unlike his fellow student not only in physical endowment but also in temperament, experience, mental capacity, and the like, members of the Faculty endeavor at all times to consider individual differences and offer individualized instruction to help each student find himself and carve out his own particular niche in the world. Our teachers are keenly aware of their responsibilities and duties as elements of a decidedly important segment of the community and consequently devote their time and energy and the products of their training and education toward helping students equip themselves for shouldering the burdens which will fall upon them when they become full-fledged members of society. Continuously our Faculty members strive to keep abreast of the most recent knowledge and information in their respective fields and to acquire the latest education methods and techniques so that this knowledge may be imparted most effectively to students. Compared to many other vocations and professions, both those requiring extensive education and training and those requiring little, teaching is unremunerative, but our devoted teachers consider themselves greatly rewarded by the realization that they are moulding youths who in their adulthood will help maintain the position of our nation as the greatest in the world. We were eager sophomores who sought everything that Scott had to offer. We, at last, felt a part of something lug and important. With anticipation, we joined the school clubs and organizations, attended the sports functions, studied, and learned to form ideas and opinions. We humbly followed the examples set by the upperclassmen whom we admired. Surely, we experienced a wonderful year. Before we knew it, we were juniors. It was our turn to set examples, and to strive for higher goals. This year we welcomed a freshman class to our Scott High School family, and it was partly our duty to make them feel at home. We found this year to be the most difficult of all, the memory of it will remain the longest. By this time we developed strong loyalties to the school, and realized how rapidly the high school years were slipping by. We attended Proms and acquired lasting friendships. We became officers of clubs, and acquired new responsibilities. Soon another year rapidly ended. At last, we were the leaders of the school. We, the proud seniors, tried our best to honor the name of Norbra High. We knew our high school days were numbered, and we tried to grasp on to the wonderful memories of the times behind us. But we must realize that the past is complete, and post-graduate life will not be the same. In our three years at Scott, we experienced times of joy and sorrow, but our greatest sorrow is leaving. We are truly grateful to the patient, understanding teachers who made us feel a part of the school. We have taken much from a school that asks nothing more than that we honor its name. So indeed, we, the Class of '64, do honor the name of Norbra High. 39 ROY ALLEN JUDITH ALM NORBRA HI TO THEE MARLENE BECKER WE ALL ARE LOYAL, RONALD BERKOVITZ MARY LOU BONAY ALBERT BORGONY DONALD BOWSER AND MAY THY CAROL BRUCKER RAYMOND BUCK DENISE CHIZMAR SANDRA CICCOTELLI CAROL R. As we think of them, each group of us, freshman, sophomore, and junior, can look ahead to the day when we will he in their places. As each new year begins, a preceding class will step up to take their place as leaders of the school. We will try to live up to the honor of Scott High as you, the Class of 1964, have so nobly done. We know it is a road full of temptations with every step we take. As we advance from our freshman year to our junior year, we have fought some of these temptations; but the road is still long, as long as we cannot see the end. As we progress from freshmen to seniors, we hope we have gained much knowledge which will help us to become better citizens. When we finally become seniors, we realize that we have spent four wonderful years of our lives here. The freshmen may not realize this now but in years to come, as they look back on their school years, they will cherish these memories. This yearbook acts as a record of all our happiest, saddest, and most embarrassing incidents, and we will relive them as we leap through this HIGHLANDER of 1964. 73 In September of 1962 we enrolled as the sophomore class of Scott High School. This enrollment marked the beginning of our maturity. We are becoming adults. As the time approaches for the class of 1964 to leave Scott we experience many deep emotions. First, let us congratulate you, the senior class, upon your graduation from Scott. Let us also wish you luck, for now you must put into use all the training and education you have received during your life. Now you will become members of the social and business world. This is the time when you must prove yourselves worthy American citizens. Finally, let us thank you for the guidance which we have received from you during our years at Scott. To the underclassmen we wish all the luck in the world during their future years at Scott. When we become seniors, they will be the ones who will need guidance and encouragement. We can only hope that we will be sufficiently qualified to give them this guidance. Of course, as we all know, only time can tell. These past two years have undoubtedly been the most crucial years of our lives. During these years learning and memorizing were not the only important objectives. We had to teach ourselves to act as high school students should. We had to accept maturity as a fundamental part of life. This is even more important than learning and memorizing facts since the molding of students into adults is actually the main objective of a school. Through guidance from the seniors and teachers and through effort of our own we believe we have matured, and now feel that we are ready to take the reigns of Scott. Before closing, we want to wish the graduating class a very prosperous future filled with happiness and contentment. Students at Scott High were kept busy this past year with various activities catering to each and every type of personality. These activities ranged from music to sports and appealed to both the cultural and recreational interests of the student body. Many of these activities centered around the thrills and spills on the gridiron and on the basketball court. While the athletes supplied the action, members of the band, the majorettes, the cheerleaders, and the pep club supplied the entertainment for the fans as well as the inspiration for all the members of the teams. Special events such as Commencement and the Spring Concert gave the musically inclined of Scott High an opportunity to display their talents. For members of the chorus, choir, and orchestra, these events climaxed a year of hard work and careful preparation. Organizations such as the art club, Spanish Club, French Club, and Future Nurses Club, The HIGHLANDER and the TARTAN did their share in bringing culture to the student body. For these clubs, this school term proved to be very successful. Over three-fourths of the student body participated in one or more of these groups. Also offered to the students this past year were two secondary sports, bowling and chess. Both of these activities had very successful seasons. In fact, a section championship was brought home to Scott by the Chess Team. We hope everyone has now seen what co-operation and incentive can do for any organization. Our thanks and congratulations are extended to the many clubs existing at Scott. 85 STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW, left to right: L. Wozniak, R. Tore, J. Kasprisen. M. A. Evanish, D. Hyland, D. Among these were the recognition of sororities and fraternities, the sale of sweatshirts, new mirrors in the girls’ room, and more dances. Of course they not only proposed new ideas but also carried out their regular duties. They helped to plan special events such as the Prom and Snowball. They did such things as selling tickets, hiring orchestras, and reserving night spots for these events. The Student Council representatives talked to the student body in order to find out what changes in the school system could improve Scott High. At their meetings they would bring up these issues and vote on them. Also attending the meetings was Mr. Rudolph Celigoi, whose main duty was to represent the faculty. This year, the Student Council did whatever they could to satisfy the pupil’s requests. CHESS CLUB For the first time in its three year history, the Scott High Chess Club has produced a winning team. Playing against rugged competition, the club's chess team racked-up a 26, 2-8V record and copped the Section III title. The leading members of this team were: Bob Wilhelm 7-0. John Wilhelm John Fruhwald 5-2, and George Prokop 5Vfe-llfe-As for the fifth position on the starting team, a few other members of the club were switched back and forth. However, even though some of the members of the club did not participate on the team, they still played their share of chess. A week before each match, any member of the club could “challenge” a player on the team for his position. If the club member succeeded in beating his opponent, he took his position on the team. Thus, everyone in the club participated, one way or another, in the forming of the chess team. We of the yearbook wish to congratulate the Scott High Chess Team for their exceptional efforts in winning the section title, and wish them the best of luck in the future!!! What do you have to remind you of your wonderful high school days? What long-kept souvenir can reflect upon those memories of the activities you took part in? Most of all, what can bring to your mind the pictures of your favorite friends and teachers? The HIGHLANDER can show you all of these and much more about your high school days in half an hour. But it certainly took more time than that to edit the yearbook. The staff, under the supervision of Mr. Rodgers, the faculty advisor, really put forth their best in editing the 1964 edition of the HIGHLANDER. The outstanding members of the yearbook staff this year were George Prokop and Robert Wilhelm, coeditors; Betsy Walter, associate editor; John Fruhwald. business manager; Susan Ratica, secretary; and Suzanne Hatok. treasurer. Besides these, there were a few underclassmen who strived to make this yearbook better than any of the others. These people devoted their valuable time to co-operating with the rest of the staff in order to make this edition succeed. Some of the money-raising activities of the HIGHLANDER were selling refreshments at the football and basketball games, selling Christmas cards, and selling “Scott High” pens. One of their more interesting feats was the faculty-varsity game. This game drew a great number of viewers, therefore benefiting the HIGHLANDER. In addition to these, the yearbook staff made it possible for the students to buy candy, cookies, and other goodies at lunchtime. What outstanding element in the yearbook catches your eye? The pictures of course. But when you look at them, do you ever think of who the photographer is? This year Mr. Rodgers and George Prokop took care of that department. They had the talent to catch people in their candid poses. Our HIGHLANDER is certainly fortunate to have such expert photographers. The HIGHLANDER would never have been so successful this year though, if it wasn’t for the support of all the wonderful students who partook in its activities. 89 FIRST ROW, left to right: D. Through the efforts of the faculty advisor. Miss Rachel M. D’Urso. and the TARTAN staff, Scott High newspaper, once again, had a successful year. For the first time in ten years, we had subscriptions in addition to the usual individual purchases. The total cost for all five issues was a reduced price. To encourage purchasing by subscription a campaign was initiated. The editors of the staff “created” original posters which were distributed to the various homerooms as a constant reminder of the campaign. With the cooperation of the student council representatives who supported this project, and the TARTAN homeroom representatives, more than one half the entire student body subscribed to the paper by October. Other fund-raising projects included the selling of lineups, blue and white pennants with the school banner, and “Scott” pins at the home football games. Together with the yearbook staff, the TARTAN staff sold Christmas cards, salt and pepper shakers, holiday lamp posts, and other novelties in accord with the Christmas season. Other activities included the submission of several copies of the TARTAN to the Pitt University newspaper staff and the Duquesne University Scholastic Press Association to be evaluated. Their comments of praise and or criticism will be the basis for the improvement of the paper in the years to come. Two members of the staff were enrolled in the Junior Press Club Association and attended the various conferences, plays, and interviews held throughout the year. Representatives from other high school newspaper staffs visited the TARTAN newsroom and observed our staff’s procedures and techniques of layout, and also contributed facts which proved to be useful in the layout of their paper. On the whole, this year proved to be a very prosperous and fruitful year for the members of the TARTAN staff in that the staff activities were not only educational but also recreational. competitive, and enjoyable. Once again, the Spanish Club, sponsored for the second consecutive year by Miss Sauchin and Mr. J. Oriss, had a very successful year. Included among the club’s many activities was the annual Christmas Party, with the traditional breaking of the pinata and the singing of Spanish Christmas Carols. Many members of the faculty and school board attended, and the entire affair was very colorful. This year, for the first time, the members of the club have assumed the responsibility of supporting an orphan in Spain. This was made possible by the sale of candy in the fall. To increase their understanding of Spanish culture and customs, the members presented original plays and skits in Spanish. Spanish art was better understood when Mr. Wilt of the art department showed slides of Spanish art and explained the styles of the different artists. Because the meetings were informal and enjoyable the club members have taken more interest in the Spanish language and culture. FRONT ROW. left to right: P. Russell. D. Johnson, C. Weyels, K. PEP CLUB School spirit is one of the necessities of every high school, and Scott was no exception. Our school spirit and student loyalty was shown through the formation of the Pep Club. Although the club failed in former attempts, it became quite successful this year. Its birth stimulated the student body into taking more interest in the athletic competition and events. Under the supervision and guidance of Miss Rose Sauchin, the Pep Club with Ron Fenchak as president played a vital role in many sports including football and basketball. Through the Pep Club, members found fellow classmates with similar admiration for Scott’s athletic teams. Together, these devoted teenagers attended football and basketball games and cheered the mighty Raiders on. regardless of victory or defeat. Also, the Pep Club formed large cheering sections at the school pep rallies and helped make them a success. In addition to cheering, the Pep Club has been largely responsible for the signs and posters that were hung in the halls of Scott High School before a big game. Thanks to Miss Sauchin, Ron Fenchak. and all students who participated, our Pep Club has become a successful organization. FIRST ROW. left to right: J. Schwoegl. J. Nixdorf. K. McWilliams. D. Yurik. This was only one of the many cheers that could be heard this year as the 1963-64 cheerleaders under the capable leadership of Helen Gribbon, lead the student body at the football and basketball games. They displayed much pep and enthusiasm throughout the year. With the help of the reorganized Pep Club, the enthusiasm at the pep rallies and games increased. At the cheerleaders’ convention, new cheers were learned that were popular with cheerleaders throughout the state. New techniques were taught to help improve the cheers. The latest styles in cheering uniforms were modeled at a fashion show. Practicing hard during the summer, the cheerleaders prepared for the fall. They created new cheers and routines to add variety to the old cheers. A new attraction this year was the Varsity joining the band and majorettes on the field at half time. The Varsity had a routine to Norbra Hi which was worked in with the majorettes. Also, candy was sold to help pay for shakers. Sweat shirts were bought with Varsity and Jr. Varsity on them. There were memorable moments that this year’s squad experienced. One of these was when the Raiders won their first game by beating Glassport. The cheering was terrific and so was the response of the student body. None of the squad will ever forget the Scott-Braddock game. Snow, rain, wind, and cold didn’t prevent the cheerleaders from cheering the Raiders on. Even though the team lost, the spirit and enthusiasm of the student body was still there. The cheerleaders were proud to represent their school. Their loyalty gave Scott something to be proud of. Congratulations on a job well done. The 1963-1964 majorettes, in keeping up with the tradition of the past high-steppers of Scott High School, completed another successful season. The girls spent a part of their summer participating in a few parades in the district. Along with the band, the majorettes also performed in a dedication ceremony at the Benjamin Fairless School. During the summer months the girls learned new routines and marches for parades and practiced for their half-time shows. They performed many enjoyable shows to entertain the spectators at the football games; among them were the Can-Can, the Bosa Nova, and the Charleston. They also had the honor of performing at an away game at Shaler. Besides these activities, the majorettes showed their high-stepping abilities at the pep rallies which were held before the games. Few people realize the long hours of practice and preparation it takes to achieve the precision that our majorettes have. The only reward the girls get is the applause and cheers which meet their ears as they march down the field. We wish to salute our majorettes on a job well done. MARCHING BAND A high school band holds a very important position, it is the duty of the band to represent the school by providing entertainment for students and others as well. This year, the Scott High School Marching Band, under the direction of Professor George Womelsdorf, again fulfilled its task of representation through entertainment. The football games were enlivened by the band's music and precision marching during half-time shows. These shows consisted of modem songs such as “Blame It On The Bossa Nova and “Kickin' Conga,” as well as old time favorites like Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home and “Yankee Doodle Dandee.” Aside from entertaining at football games, the band also participated in many parades including the Halloween and Memorial Day Parade in North Braddock. But by far the most important and successful event of the year was the Spring Music Festival. During this evening event, the band captivated the audience with numbers like “Highlights from Camelot, “Rhapsody in Swing, and Wagner’s Evening Star from his famous opera Tannbauser. Looking back on all the events in which the band participated, it can certainly be said that the band lived up to its duties. We give our sincere thanks to Professor Womelsdorf and the members of our band. CHORUS FIRST ROW, left to right: E. Scherrbaum, M. L. Fecik, M. E. Hamilton, C. Bulik, C. Lose. K. Vargo, D. Egnatz, M. Yurik SPORTS 108 The philosophy of sports at Scott High School is no different than any other activity of the school. We strive for improvement in all phases of education. Athletics is not any more important than any other endeavor, but the athletic heads strive for perfection in the various sports and it is as it should be. Football and basketball are our major sports followed by baseball and golf, which is our newest interest. Football probably creates the most interest, as it is strictly a man's game. In order to play modern football you must be physically and mentally alert at all times. Our coach Rogel is the best example of physical fitness in the coaching field. His technical background is excellent and his great desire to excell in his chosen field is a tonic for our young players. Basketball, our winter sport, picks up the slack after football has run its course. North Braddock has a tradition to uphold in the round ball game and we always have our share of luminaries to continue the interest in the winter months. Baseball is handicapped with the usual inclement weather and we are badly in need of a playing field, but the spring activity is in the capable hands of Ralph Serrapede, a former professional ball player with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Golf is coached by Robert Dunlap and Bernard Oriss and we are endeavoring to help the boys who have ability along this particular line. The athletic traditions at Scott High School are in young capable hands and we are going to remain a first rate power in athletics. SENIOR ATHLETES DENNIS HYLAND Football, Basketball. Their lack of wins stemmed mostly from injuries to key personnel and some bad luck. Mr. Rogel. in his first year as head coach, and his assistants. Mr. Celigoi and Mr. Serrapede, spent a frustrating season beginning with the season's opener at Munhall. In that game, time ran out as the Raiders were moving toward a touchdown which would have tied the score. The next big disappointment for the coaches and team came at Shaler. There, our Raiders moved the ball all over the field, but just couldn't push it across the goal line. The game ended in a scoreless tie, but it presented several new problems to the coaches since two of the first team were hurt. Finally, after losing a close game to Swissvale. the Raiders's luck changed and they had a string of three successive victories against Glassport, Homestead, and Turtle Creek. However, the Glass-port victory was costly, since two other first string players were injured. Scott outplayed Homestead, but it wasn’t until the fourth quarter of the Turtle Creek game that the Raiders showed their domination. With an even won-lost record, the Raiders moved into their biggest game of the season— Braddock. Although the weather was terrible, a mixture of rain, snow, cold, and wind, the game was played. As they did at Shaler, the Raiders moved the ball well and controlled the game but couldn't score. Braddock. however, capitalizing on the muddy field, caught Scott in the end zone in the first half and was awarded a safety. Despite the Raiders many threats, Braddock held on to their slim lead to win. Our team and coaches certainly deserve praise for their hard, long work. The Class of ’64 congratulates the Raiders and their fine coaches. Head Coach Bernard Orris Assistant Coach Bernard McLaughlin The 1963-64 Raider basketball team coached by Mr. Bernard Oriss, assisted by Mr. Bernard McLaughlin, provided a lot of interest on the hardwood this season as they posted a respectable 7-7 record in W.P.I.A.L. play. Led by high scoring Norm Zanetti (19 points per game average), co-captains Denny Hyland, Leon Goudelock, Bob Howell, Roy Allen, Mike Frederick. Bob Benton, and Bill Moorhead, the team proved to be a contender all season long. This hustling aggregation of 6 seniors and 2 juniors was especially effective on the home court as even the strong section leaders Baldwin and Westinghouse Valley were quick to learn. The Raiders lost these last two bitterly fought contests in the waning minutes of the game. The most satisfying season victory for the team was their solid trouncing of Swissvale on the Scott court. On the road the Scotties ran into some difficulties as they were only able to win twice. Cold shooting nights and poor ball handling accounted for this lack of success. Next year the Raiders will be somewhat handicapped in that there are only two returning lettermen plus a serious lack of height. But with the likes of Bob Benton, Bill Moorhead. Bob Krul, Harrison Bradford, Fran Zilko, Ron Donovan, and a few other hustling underclassmen, the team could provide another good basketball season. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! 117 A jump ball attempt. BASKETBALL Managers: George Prokop and Joe Beilner. A little pre-game seriousness. Junior Varsity Basketball The J. V.s started off the 1963-1964 basketball season fine by winning their first three exhibition games and losing the final one at Glassport. During the league season, however, they slowed down to play average ball, winning seven and losing six, thus ending the season with ten won and seven lost. The J. V.s played exciting, fast moving ball throughout the season. Even when they were behind, they played the brand of ball Scott High School is noted for. Some of the most thrilling games were played as Scott. Two of the better games were a 34-30 victory over Edgewood in the home opener and a 48-44 loss to Turtle Creek, also at home. Baseball In his third year as coach, Mr. Serrapede and his team finished the season with four wins and five losses. Due to the reseeding of the football field, the Scott High Raiders were without the use of a practice field. Under these circumstances the team did as well as was expected. Highlights of the season were two victories over their arch rivals Braddock, ten to four and six to three, and coming from behind with the score seven to two to beat Churchill eight to seven. The most impressive thing to Mr. Serrapede was the performance of the pitching staff, which gave up only seven earned runs in nine games. Tim Cosgrove, the only senior pitcher, had an earned run average of .400 which is less than one run per game. A homerun. They symbolize the gaiety and excitement of each individual living in and around the city. As we of Scott High view these lights we experience a feeling of joy and anxiety. Just as these lights of the city are filled with glitter and glamour, so are our special events. The events are tangible evidence of the hard work done by all interested students. The Snowball and the Prom highlight our special events. An array of colors more numerous than those shades which appear in a rainbow are seen on the dance floor. These nights are two of the loveliest nights of the year. To honor our much appreciated athletes we held an Athletic Banquet. Mr. Anthony Mason from Niles-McKinley High School in Ohio gave a tremendous speech that no one who heard it will forget. In order for high school students to plan a future the administration organizes a Career Night. The students take this opportunity to ask questions of professionals about their careers. These are just a few of the special events held at Scott, but we must remember every special event plays an equally important part in a students high school education. It helps him to become acquainted with the demands of society and to carry on the glory of Norbra High. 127 Senior play cast presents a bouquet of roses to Miss Miller. SENIOR PLAY On November 15. 1963. the graduating class of 1964 presented its play. It was Beauty and the Beef. a three act comedy by William Davidson. The plot deals with the efForts of two coeds to have the major football game postponed until the captain of the team is reinstated from suspension. There is a misunderstanding involving apparent cheating on examination. Most of the players are made seriously ill because of a dose of epicac. Finally things are straightened out; the game is played, and good old Oakdale wins. The leading roles were played by Mary Lou Fecik as Ginny Allen, the Beauty; and by Denny Hyland as Robert Anderson, the Beef. Miss Miller coaches the actors Do I gotta drum it into your head? It was the bonfire that evening to bum the traditional tiger. This ceremony was the symbol of the defeat of the Braddock High football team the next afternoon. The bonfire, which was held in the stone quarry, attracted many adults as well as students. They crowded around the huge hot-flaming timbers. The burning of the Brad-dock tiger then came. Arriving in a wooden coffin, the tiger was then burned to death atop the flaming timbers. The cheerleaders led the crowd in shouts of victory while the band helped along by playing the school songs and other popular tunes. All at once shouts and screams were heard when the different colored flares were shot into the night air to display their beauty against the blackness of the sky. The shooting of the flares ended the bonfire and the crowds wondered home feeling sure of victory for the Scott High Raiders the next day. But, of course, all this could not have been possible had it not been for the Third Ward Volunteer Firemen wrho watched and put out our bonfire. 132 On the fourth of December 1963 the annual Athletic Banquet was held at the V.F.W. Home in East Pittsburgh. All in attendance were served a very delicious baked ham dinner. Those honored by the dinner were the members of the Scott athletic team and senior band members, majorettes, cheerleaders, managers and coaches. A very comnlendable job was done by Dr. H. Tongue who took over the assignment of toast master. Dr. Clay. Mr. Rensko, Mr. Reed, and Fran Rogel were our local speakers all of whom were very impressive in their talks. We were indeed very fortunate in having two guest speakers Special Delivery Jones, a former All American from the University of Pittsburgh, and Mr. Mason, a nationally known high school coach from Niles Ohio. Mr. Jones spoke of his football experiences along the humorous vein and was really entertaining. Mr. Mason who has had unusual success in the coaching field spoke in a more serious slant. The Niles Ohio, high school team has not tasted defeat in five years under the coaching of Mr. Mason. The theme of Mr. Mason’s speech was the mental and physical preparation that must be made by an athlete before he can be of any value to himself or his team. All in attendance will long remember the inspiring speech given by our guest speaker Mr. Mason. The banquet ended with a feeling that the future athletic program at Scott looked rather bright. The honored guests and all in attendance are very grateful to the North Braddock School Board and Superintendent for making this festive occasion possible. ATHLETIC BANQUET Usherettes COLLEGE NIGHT The willingness of a homogeneous area to cooperate was well proven when Scott, Braddock, Rankin, St. Thomas, and East Pittsburgh high schools pooled efforts and talent and presented a 5-school College Night on October 28. The purpose of a College Night is to provide the students and their parents with an opportunity to meet with representatives of area colleges and universities, so that they might know more about programs, costs, procedures, and requirements for admission. At the same time, college admissions officers get to meet prospective students, and, by visiting the area and its schools, become aware of problems that might exist. (Economical. Sociological, etc.) The program consisted of a general session in the Scott auditorium with an introduction of guests, visitors, and officials. From there, students and parents could visit two sessions, each one-half hour in length. In all. twenty colleges were represented, and in a survey taken the following week, these colleges felt that this was a worthwhile project. In general, interest was high and the turn-out good, considering that attendance was on a voluntary basis. Many of our classmates are now attending a college that they became interested in during this district College Night. CAREER NIGHT Once again this year Scott High School students joined others from different schools in the area to participate in Career Night. The purpose of this annual program is to help students obtain information about the careers in which they are interested, and to help them plan for the future. Representatives from a wide variety of fields were present, and several offered pamphlets and booklets in addition to their speeches and class discussions about their occupation. Through the efforts of Mr. Robert Bowman, Guidance Counselor, this year’s program proved to be beneficial to many students. The HIGHLANDER now presents some of the activities of Career Night in these pictures. MARY ANN EVANISH 1964 SNOWBALL QUEEN On the evening of February 8. 1964. Scott held its eighth annual Snowball. In decorating for the event this year, the art club carried through the Valentine’s Day theme. Artificial flowers covered the posts and railings in the gym. while cupids and hearts hung from the red and white streamers that were across the top of the gym. A pink heart centered with red flowers decorated the queen’s throne. The queen, Mary Ann Evanish, was crowned in the early part of the evening. Dennis Hyland, Student Council President and her escort, presented her with a bouquet of long-stemmed red roses, and they led off the next dance. Members of the queen’s court were Lorraine Belechak, Mary Esposto. Barbara Nagy, and Phyllis Sacchinelli. The couples finished out the evening dancing to the music of Johnny Jay’s combo. After the dance, many of the couples went to the Lamplighter for dinner and more dancing. 136 s N O w B A L L Our chaperones enjoyed themselves The Queen and her escort led off the next dance. The 1964 Junior Prom, sponsored by the Junior Class, was held on Friday. April 22, 1964. The Junior Student Council members made up the Prom Committee. The couples at the dance spent the evening dancing to the music of Tommy Payne’s band. The songs ranged from the Hokey Pokey to San Francisco. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of June Totter as this years queen. Denn«s Hyland, Student Council President, crowned the queen, presented her with roses, and they led off the next dance. June’s escort was Babe Scarpino. After the Prom the couples went to the Jacktown Hotel for dinner and more dancing. Del Ray the magician entertained at the Jacktown. The queen’s court consisted of every junior girl that attended the dance. 140 Chaperons relax Sweet music r.t Strike up the band! SPRING CONCERT This year’s Spring Music Festival marked a special event in the life of George L. Womelsdorf, our Supervisor of Music. On Friday, April 10, 1964, Mr. Womelsdorf directed his final concert. First to offer their entertainment was the Elementary School Band under the direction of Mrs. Lillian Coddington. Their opening song, ‘‘Choral”, promised that an exciting evening lay ahead. Next on the agenda was the Junior High School Orchestra, directed by Mrs. Jane Page. The highlight of the evening was. of course, the Scott High School Band. The listeners thoroughly enjoyed their rendition of “Camelot”. Also, the trumpet solo by Richard Napolitan was well liked. He very talentedly played I Left My Heart In San Francisco . Included in the program was a lively routine by the senior majorettes to “Lady Of Spain . The Star Spangled Banner brought this exciting evening to a close. Some day Mr. Womelsdorf will reflect upon his last, wonderful concert. 145 It doesn’t taste like beef stew. SENIOR BANQUET Members of the senior class attended the annual Senior Banquet held at the Edgewood Country Club May 14 at 7 p.m. Dennis Hyland, Student Council president, and the senior members of the Student Council planned the affair. Music was provided by the Jack Purcell Orchestra. Featured on the menu were: fruit cup, Yankee pot roast, mashed potatoes, peas, tossed salad, ice cream, and beverages. Many of the seniors had paid for their banquet in advance by selling senior play tickets last Fall. 146 A bevy of beauties. SENIOR FAREWELL Pensive waiting Forward March! GRADUATION So you made it.
