HIGHLANDER SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL NORTH BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA Editor Roberta Puhala Assistant Editors George Prokop, Robert Wilhelm Business Manager Eileen Jackowski It was August, 1960. For the seniors of 1963, it was the beginning of three of the most important, memorable, joyful, and yes, even sorrowful years of our lives. As we timidly stood around the doors waiting for the bell to ring, a TV cameraman was taking pictures. We must have been horrified (and showed it) for he laughed and said to his partner, “You can always tell the new ones.” Well, that was our beginning. Since then we’ve experienced and gained many things. We’ve experienced joys and sorrows like: the time our team beat Brad-dock, the time Susie didn’t make it for majorette, the time John was star of the basketball game, the time Joe got all A’s, the time our best boyfriend stole our best girlfriend, and many, many others. But, more important still, is what we’ve gained. Besides a host of lifetime friends, we’ve gained a well-rounded education which, in all cases, serves as the basis for everyone’s future life. With our high school education we will start a new life. We shall make a new beginning. With our new beginning we will take with us what we have learned. With all the basic elements of life, such as the fact that all men are created equal; life is not all joys but also sorrows and we must learn to accept both, and the fact that we must work honestly and vigorously for what we obtain, combined with the education we received out of books, we are prepared to meet the future with open minds and open hearts. For this we would like to sincerely thank our wonderful teachers who are responsible. We thank them not only as teachers, but also as friends. Yes, Norbra Hi, has given us many memories, but this book will serve as a memoir, a most treasured one, of the wonderful times we’ve shared. And, to the underclassmen, it serves as our wish of happiness and success plus this bit of advice: “Make the most of your years in school for you can never go back and make them up.” That August day was our beginning, but with this book serving as our everlasting remembrance we will never have an end. We, the senior class of 1963, bid farewell to our beloved Norbra Hi. SUCCESS, HOPE ; We, the Senior Class of Scott High School, wish to present this year book as a token of our affection for our school. We hope to record on the following pages many of the joys and a few of the heartbreaks we have experienced. We shall take you from the first days when we fearfully entered its portal, to the last days when we eagerly, yet sadly, realize we must close the door on this chapter of our lives and take our places in the adult world. Our journey will be quick, but we hope you will like the trip as well as we have enjoyed escorting you on it. House, J. Suley, E. Guerrieri, T. Gribbin, M. Chizmar, W. Sarver, S. Pendro Congratulations to the 1963 Seniors Edward House Anton Bigman Solicitor SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS The Superintendent’s Message Fellow Students Today’s youth — including the members of your graduating class are tomorrow’s adults — production and service workers, technicians, professionals, clerks and managers — parents or other heads of families. Foremost, your admission to the adult world, — your badge of belonging, is a job. However, automation, mechanization and scientific advances are causing many unskilled jobs to disappear. Today’s and tomorrow’s jobs require higher skills, more maturity and judgment, more education, and more experience. Your schools face what may be the principal challenge of the 20th century public education in gearing their programs to meet the rapid changes in our economy and technology. You, as graduates, face a world of promise and unprecedented challenge. You must be confident, eager, and anxious to enter and to succeed in the adult world, as were your fathers and grandfathers. You must not allow this venturesome spirit to be dulled by the discovery that jobs do not exist, or that those that do, are out of reach. Most of you, with adequate preparation will find steady, satisfying and productive work. Your graduation from Scott High School is the first step toward success in whatever the future holds for you. Sincerely yours, Curtis J. Clay Superintendent of Schools SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL To the Class of 1963, The educated man is by no means insensitive to the pleasures of the. senses. But his greatest satisfaction is derived from the use of his mind. Life for him becomes a voyage of discovery of himself, of others, and of the forces that shape the environment. The more he understands, the more fully he lives. The educated man also seeks to justify his existence by contributing in some constructive way to the operation of society as a whole. Graduation from high school launches a man on his search for fulfillment. This is the search that unites him with teachers, writers, and the other discoverers all around him. This is his challenge, the imagination and effort he brings to bear on his work represents his personal search for fulfillment. May each graduate of 1963 find it. Andrew G. Once there, we were to embark upon the greatest adventure of our lives. We were to become a part of the adult world through our experiences at Scott High. Now that we have been here for two years, we are glad for this opportunity to make our sentiments known. First, we want to congratulate you, the senior class of 1963. Though you have made many contributions to our school, we are in a way happy to see you go. At long last, the roadway is open for us to be the leaders of Scott. The path has been long and sometimes very difficult, but come next September we will finally enter Scott as the worthy leaders we hope we will be. We wish to thank both of the senior classes with whom we have been fortunate enough to attend school. You have showed us the right way to conduct ourselves as Scott High students. Sometimes we did get out of line, but you were always there to show us where we were going wrong. To the underclassmen we wish all the luck in the world for your future years at Scott. If ever you have any problems, you can always come to us for the guidance we hope we can give. We know that you will work with us to make 1964 the best year our school has ever had. So now we must close, since this is the senior book not ours. We hope that you, the graduating class, have everything wonderful in the adult world, and that the sun may always shine on your pathways of life. FRONT ROW: C. Copeland, C. Bulik, M. Delaney, D. Frederick STUDENT COUNCIL This year’s Student Council began with the elections in September. It has provided, however, for all future elections to be held in May. This will enable the president and other officers to start their work earlier. This is only one of the accomplishments of this year’s student government. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Rudolph Celigoi and the leadership of President Randall Valentine the council reached a much higher degree of understanding and cooperation between the students and faculty than ever before. Besides arranging for pep rallies, crowns for the Snow Ball queen and Prom queen, and setting up schedules for lyceum programs, the council also encouraged the intramural sports at lunch time, arranged for the purchase of new milk machines and generally supported school functions and activities. These are only a few examples of the fine job done by the 1962-63 Student Council. librarians Left to Right: V. Milakovic, T. Dicoskey, V. Bower, D. Dawson, E. Horensky, J. Greer, A. Marunak, M. This explains the careful planning and preparation of the HIGHLANDER. Mr. Rodgers, faculty advisor, and Roberta Puhala. editor, worked with the rest of the staff to make the yearbook the storehouse of memories that it is. In order to keep the price of the HIGHLANDER as low as possible, the staff operated the refreshment stands at all the football and basketball games. In addition, it opened a refreshment stand in the gym at lunchtime. Featured in the HIGHLANDER are numerous pictures and write-ups of year-round school activities. The yearbook staff worked from September to June in assembling the 1963 HIGHLANDER. The members hope that everyone enjoys reading and owning this book as much as they enjoyed producing it. Unlike any other school activity, the newspaper staff has no chance for preparation or practice. With the beginning of school the staff jumps immediately into the pool of hard work, perseverance and patience to put out the first edition. They work earnestly to put out a paper that the student body will like. This year, under the direction of Miss Rachel DTJrso and editor, Jo-Ann Morvay, the TARTAN took on an entirely new look. The print was smaller and the pictures were larger. In this way, the paper appeared more professional and attractive. To raise money, the staff sold lineups at the football games, Scott pins, banners, and Christmas cards. This helped keep the price of the paper down. The TARTAN is looked forward to by all the students and is enjoyed and appreciated by everyone. This year’s TARTAN was informative, interesting, and entertaining. It provided news for everyone — from freshmen to seniors. The staff of the TARTAN is to be congratulated on their fine job and commended for giving up their time and energy so freely and willingly. The Junior College Club's job is to start to prepare students for college. Under the direction of Mr. Rudolph Celigoi, this club enabled juniors to become a little more aware of the advantages afforded by a college education. Most of the work was giving tests in preparation for the college boards. This club also participated in College Night. In this way the juniors were exposed to various schools of higher education. This is to their advantage when they have to choose a school. This club undoubtedly fulfilled its purpose. It brought some students a little closer to college. Mr. Rudolph Celigoi was responsible for the success of the Senior College Club this year. For the college-bound, it was perhaps the most important club available. It helped them to choose the right college and course, and to prepare for the college life ahead. The seniors took tests to determine their interests and aptitudes which also prepared them for the college boards. During the course of the year one of the most important functions was College Night. Representatives from different colleges and universities came to familiarize students with their respective colleges. The Senior College Club has undoubtedly given our seniors the background they need to succeed in the years ahead. FRENCH CLUB The purpose of the French Club is to stimulate the interests of the students and bring them closer to the French language. The accomplishment of this can be seen by the excellent attendance at the meetings. The purpose of these bi-monthly meetings is to bring French culture to the members. Mr. Morgan gave an interesting lecture on French paintings. The French Club attended the Christmas party sponsored by Spanish Club. The French Club and the Spanish Club held a picnic at South Park. The French Club also enjoyed a tour of the Carnegie Museum where the members viewed the Van Gogh paintings. SPANISH CLUB Miss Rose Sauchin and Mr. James Oriss were responsible for the success of this year’s Spanish Club. It brought the students closer to the Spanish language and Spanish culture through various programs. One of the activities was the annual Christmas party with the traditional breaking of the pinata. The French Club were guests at this party. Entertainment such as plays, Spanish bingo, records, and movies were provided at the meetings. This served a two-fold purpose. Besides entertainment, this brought the students much closer to the language. The year was closed with a bang at the Spanish Club picnic held at South Park. The 1962-1963 Spanish Club has been one of the most successful in the history of Scott. JAPANESE CLUB Left to Right: S. Vargay, P. Safran, V. Milakovic, E. Mizla, N. Prisalac, M. Evanish, G. Experience was also gained by the majority of the members by working as volunteer candy-stripers at the local hospitals. This club succeeded in stimulating the interest of many students who plan careers in medicine. ART CLUB Bottom Row: R. Dinkfelt, R. Jackson, J. Aim, J. Stanfield, V. Abromitis, C. McLaughlin, J. This year the club participated in tournaments with various schools. This brought new interest and competition to the club. Worthwhile, interesting and certainly challenging, is the Chess Club. Good luck!!! We hope this club continues at Scott and is a great success. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Junior Achievement, or more commonly called J. A. is a truly worthwhile organization. It familiarizes students with the operatons of businesses. The students literally start their own business. It is broken down into companies and each company sets up its own little business. The students sell stocks in their company, produce their own articles and sell them. From the money they make they get a wage and pay back the stockholders with interest. This is a great experince for students going into the business world. At the end of the year a banquet was held for all J. A. companies in this area. BOWLING LEAGUE The competition was rough but it was worth every minute. Every Wednesday after school the Bowling League met at the Greater Valley Bowling Lanes to compete for trophies handed out at the end of the year by Mr. McCune. Splits, strikes, spares, and even gutter balls (but not very many) went together to make the competition fun, and worthwhile. This league offered an opportunity to develop skills and to afford fun at the same time. The season terminated with a banquet at the Greater Valley Lanes. Here, everyone sat back and remembered the wonderful times he had had throughout the entire season. CHEERLEADERS Left to Right: H. Gribbin, C. Costello, J. Arendash. D. Tomasic, C. Bulik, N. Gribbin MARCHING BAND This year again Professor Womelsdorf received praise and appreciation for the fine job of creating a band with the precision and rhythm of ours. Every half time show at the football games was hi-lighted by the various themes the band enacted by the music and drills. The applause of the audience proved their appreciation and gratitude and every band member knew that those long summer practices had paid off. Besides entertaining at football games the band participated in various parades at Kennywood, St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Pittsburgh, and the Halloween and Memorial Day Parades in North Braddock. The hours of practice and drill again paid off when one spectator remarked, “Now that’s precision.” The Spring Concert was considered one of the best Scott ever had. “West Side Story” was the main source of music and the audience was moved from deep sentimental feelings to a light carefree mood as the strains of Maria” were followed by “In America.” Professor Womelsdorf and the Scott High Marching Band truly deserved the gratitude and recognition they received at the close of the season. One reason for this was the large number of returning lettermen. Except for a heartbreaking 7 to 6 loss to the Swissvale gridders, the 1963 Raiders didn’t disappoint their fans, and they completed the season with a good record — 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. Although they always played very exciting football, the Brad-dock game was the highlight of the season, just as it is every year. In this game, the Raiders edged to a 13 to 12 victory in the final minutes of the game. Our fine coaches—Mr. McCune, who leaves Scott after this year, Mr. Celigoi, and Mr. Rogel—deserve much praise for working with the squad and developing it into a respectful and very successful football team. We would like to congratulate the 1963 football squad not only on their excellent record but also on their hard work, and we would like to wish Mr. McCune good luck for the future. Two weeks later, the Raiders played their best game of the season when they defeated Rankin by a score of 66 to 62 in triple overtime. The Raiders finished their exhibition schedule with a record of two wins and two losses, but they ran into some bad luck during their league play. Despite hard work by the members of the team, the Raiders were only able to win two of their league games. Our new coaches, Mr. Oriss and Mr. McLaughlin worked hard helping the boys develop their athletic ability. In spite of a poor record, the Class of 1963 congratulates the coaches and team and wishes them good luck in the future. Front Row: R. Leith, R. Howell, R. Sandor, W. Gallagher, M. Repic, O. Highlights of the season were a 6 to 4 victory over Braddock, Scott’s traditional rival, and a 7 to 1 victory over Penn Hills, last year’s champions. A four game winning streak also enlivened the season. The good record and hard work of the team and their coach, Mr. Serrapede, certainly deserve the congratulations from the Class of 1963. . . a Standing: D. Fantaski, N. Zanetti, J. Kunsa, P. Hlavac. Amazing Not that way Something’s wrong They’re cheating I forgot my belt How graceful You in the third row, you’re next Success has been a common thing for the senior plays of Scott High School. But this year Miss Miller and the class of 1963 outdid themselves with their representation of Tammy Tell Me True. To list the superb performances by everyone that gave one would be like listing a book, but special applause was given to Michele DiBeradin as Tammy, Lynn Kliskey as Mrs. Call, Randy Valentine as Professor Tom Freeman, and, of course, Pat Carlucci as Grandpa. The story of Tammy is the heart-warming tale of a shanty-boat girl who goes to college to learn so that her boy friend will not be ashamed of her. Of course it works out the way no one expects. Scott High has a heritage of fine senior plays but it will take a lot to ever surpass Tammy. Congratulations, class of ’63, on the best job ever. I failed????? But, professor . . . Fink. Don’t just stand there. But she’s mine. Once upon a time . . . SNOWBALL As the couples entered the Snow Ball on February 9, 1963, strains of the Sonny Kane orchestra filled the air. Approximately 1000 scholarships are awarded each year and in order to be considered for an award a student must first participate in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately thirteen thousand top-scoring students are named semifinalists. In each state, the number of semifinalists is slightly less than one per cent of the graduating high school seniors in that state. All semifinalists must then meet two other requirements to become finalists and thereby receive further consideration for a Merit Scholarship. They must receive a letter of recommendation from their high school and they must participate in a second series of tests to substantiate their high scores on the preliminary tests. Michael Vargo has completed this program and based on his outstanding performance has been granted the top award offered by the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and will enroll at Carnegie Institute of Technology this fall as a major in Physics. We are all very proud of Michael and feel that this outstanding achievement is deserving of special recognition. We know that this small gesture cannot compare with the special recognition he has received from the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test but we hope that knowing it has come from his classmates will make it more meaningful and we certainly wish Mike all the good fortune in the world in his future endeavors. s N A P S H O T S Rudy Valley She did it What’s so interesting?
