% SENIOR FAREWELL It was on that warm morning of September, 1959, that the class of 1962 assembled at the doors of our never-to-be forgotten school, Scott High. Shyly we went to our assigned homerooms and were greeted by our teachers. While we were getting into the routine of high school, we had many activities to look forward to in the remaining months. As the term ended we each went our own way to enjoy the summer months, filled with anticipation for our junior year. The first part of the year breezed by with work and play going hand in hand, giving us a well-rounded school life. All our activities kept us busy and when the prom was over and final exams a reality, we realized that our junior year was now nothing more than a memory. On August 28, 1961 we entered our old stamping grounds once more, but this time as gallant seniors. In our three years at Scott we have had fun, a few tears, but most important of all, we have received an education that has molded our character and personality. We are deeply indebted to our excellent administration and a truly great group of teachers, for having the patience and understanding to help us through the many trials which confronted us. Before us we have a variety of jobs, careers, and vocations in the complex adult world. We are grateful for the training we have received in preparation for this journey. As the years swiftly pass, we will realize that we will never be able to come back to our real starting point — Scott High School. This book will serve as a memory of our trip through the halls of Scott. By looking back through it, we will try to recapture, if only for a moment, the feelings of freedom and achievement which we felt in those hallowed halls of our “Alma Mater”. Our three years at Scott were truly years of happiness. As we pass through these halls for the last time as students, we wish our underclassmen all possible future happiness. We hope that throughout this book we will show you both the work and the recreation that we have experienced here. We the Graduating Class of 1962, want to say Farewell to all those who have helped u5 reach one of our main goals in life. Editor WilliamSwartz AssistantEditor Roberta Puhala Business Manager Louise Mistick TABLE OF CONTENTS Schwab BOARD OF President, Thomas Gribbin Congratulations to the 1962 Seniors E. House, J. Suley, E. Guerrieri, 8 Secretary, Emidio Guerrieri EDUCATION SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS 10 The Superintendent Speaks : FELLOW STUDENTS: Education in America is a device for protecting liberty conceived by free men. Knowledge will keep us free. The purpose of our schools is to stimulate young people to think for themselves; to help them improve in accuracy and skills; to create interest and motivation for learning; to develop leadership; to be prepared to uphold the liberties and privileges we, as American, now possess. In this age of sputniks, jets, missiles, and astronauts, it is imperative that we gear ourselves and our educational program to cope with the constant changes in the world of today, changes that affect th every lives of our people. We look forward to a day of equal educational opportunity for all the young people in our community. We shall continue to strive for not only good schools, but the best schools for the North Braddock District—schools operating effectively in order to help all of the students we are privileged to serve. Sincerely yours, Curtis J. Clay Superintendent of Schools Dr. Clay introduces the speaker for Graduation. 11 PRINCIPAL OF SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL ANDREW G. RENSKO Congratulations ♦ ♦ TO THE CLASS OF 1962 Congratulations to you on your graduation! May I take this opportunity to remind you of the true meaning of your Commencement. Contrary to what many persons seem to believe. Commencement is a ceremony marking, not an end, but a beginning. Your graduation signals, not a stop to your education, but a step forward into true learning—that education which only experience can give you. In this new learning environment, you yourself will be not only student but, in a large measure, teacher too. You will have to assume a large portion of the responsibility of directing your own learning. I hope you seize this opportunity. In doing, you will not only add to your own happiness, but you will also be better citizens in this great country of ours. If, during your years, with us, you have learned to seek after what is right and true, to seek eagerly and vigorously, then you are taking with you the best gift we can offer, then your Commencement will be a good and true beginning. I wish you the best of luck. Andrew G. Rensko Office Staff OFFICE STAFF Second Row. K. Furjanic, M. O’Donnell. A. Kasprisin, L. Mistick. J. Marunak. V. Wiegold, M. Fall First Row: E. Ragan, N. Under the direction of Mr. Celegoi, the Student Council with Bob Safran as president, has come a long way to help the students. The suggestion box is only one example of the fine work the Council has performed. The Student Council also arranged for Pep Rallies conducted entirely by the students without the presence of the faculty. In addition, it was responsible for the repair of the cafeteria benches and the purchase of crowns for the Snow Ball queen and the Prom queen. The Student Council has also sent representatives to the National Convention for Student Council Members. This was done in the hopes that next year’s council will reach greater heights and perform better services on behalf of the students. Student Leadership PROJECTION CLUB 75 Fourth Row: R. Babyak, D. Valentine Record Events Of The Year . . . 77 As you open the 1962 Yearbook you may glance from page to page and perhaps remark, A nice book to own”, or ‘‘It was worth every cent.” But little does the reader realize the work and time that goes into these pages. From the beginning of the year our editor, William Swartz, our faculty advisor, Mr. Peairs, and our staff have worked to produce a book that would be appreciated by all. The editorial staff met after school to plan the theme of the book, and also to select the cover which adorns this issue. While all this was going on, the HIGHLANDER Staff operated refreshment stands for both Scott and Braddock home football games, sold Christmas cards, stationery, and candy. They also had the Facuity play the KQV Highoopers which proved to be a great success. After the Christmas vacation, the staff members gave up many study periods and worked long after the last school bell rang to lay out the position of the pictures and the write-ups in the dummy binder. Now that the HIGHLANDER is finally assembled, we, the staff, wish to thank everyone who has helped us to make this Yearbook a success. We can now sit back and relax and think—“Well, it was worth it, for we have a book that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.” say Pepsi. please The staff is hard at work??? The staff put forth its every effort to accomplish a newspaper that would meet with the approval of the student body. The editor, Judy Kvorjak, as well as the faculty advisor, Miss D’Urso, is to be complimented on the fine job of supervision and editing, for nobody knows better than these two, the work which must be put into an operation like this. The TARTAN received a complete revising this year with the help of Mr. Corsetti, a high school advisor from Duquesene. He devoted an entire Saturday to the staff explaining the value of a well organized paper. The TARTAN was changed from a four column spread to a five column spread. Mr. Corsetti gave the editors new ideas in headlining and paragraphing, which they 78 Let’s Go To Press . . . Third Row: L. Dickun, S. Ratica, K. Grandziowski, J. Rossi, V. Milakovic Second Row: B. This years TARTAN included a wider variety of student’s activities and more pictures to add to the readers enjoyment. In order to curtail the operating expenses, the TARTAN staff had many projects going for them. They sold football line-ups at the games, pennants, and pins. They also sold refreshments at the junior high basketball games and along with the yearbook staff, Christmas cards and candy. The TARTAN news was informative as well as interesting and entertaining. It had a remarkakble selection of every day news at Scott to world wide events. The TARTAN is an award winning paper and we hope it continued success in the future. Our congratulations to the editor, faculty advisor, and staff for a job well done. Congratulations! SENIOR COLLEGE CLUB Second Row: G. Skurcenski, M. Colao. J. Rogel, C. Pendro. L. Friedhof, K. The college bound seniors were told how to prepare for college, how to apply, and how to choose the correct institution of higher education. College Night helped many of the Seniors choose the correct school. Career Night was also planned to help those Seniors who were not going to college to choose a career. Under the guidance of Dr. Spillane, the new Guidance Counselor, the Senior College Club helped many of the college bound seniors take their first step into the future. Third Row: R. Safran, K. This club, under the guidance of Dr. Spillane, helped to prepare the juniors for college. Most of the work of the Junior College Club was giving tests such as the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, to prepare the juniors for the difficult Scholastic Aptitude Test that they must take before entering college. College Night brought the Juniors in contact with various colleges in the area. This will be of advantage to them when they choose the college they wish to attend next year. The Junior College Club also took part in Career Night. This may have influenced many of the Juniors in choosing their occupation. The Junior College Club brought the Juniors a few steps closer to college. Third Row: D. Koncsol, M. Vargo. B. Elkin, P. Katus, P. Carlucci, E. Jackowski Second Row: R. Savko. G. Reed. C. Slat, A. Sauchin Since the Future Nurses Club was formed in 1960, it has been one of the organizations in Scott that has helped many students begin their careers in the medical profession. Much of this was fulfilled through intelligence tests on English, math, social studies, etc. for the purpose of preparing the members for entrance examinations into schools of nursing. The Children’s Ward of Braddock General Hospital had quite a surprise when the FNC entertained there earlier in the year. In one of their rare appearances offstage the “Happy Stella Kolwal-ski Schotish Five” performed with tap dancers, singers, and a pinata, plus other amusements. Mrs. Corcoran has been our able supervisor throughout the year. Because of her guidance many FNC members of Scott will achieve success in their careers. 82 EL CIRCULO ESPANOL Third Row: K. The Spanish Club also sponsored a trip to the Fulton Theatre on which Spanish and French students saw the Spanish movie “El Cid.” In 1961-62 the Spanish Club truly had one of its most successful years. Christmas found the usual beautiful nativity scene in front of the administration offices. This represented a great deal of work for the Art Club. As the Snowball arrived in February, the Art Club was busy transforming the gym into a beautiful ballroom. The highlight of the club’s activity was their art exhibit on May 2. On this night each member displayed at least one piece of his work in the Activity Room. The work of the Art Club was admired by everyone. Preparing for the Snowball. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Third Row: L. Moyer After a very successful year, the Scott High School students salute Kathleen Sauchin, head majorette, and her group on a job well done. Kathy had the task of teaching new routines and marches to entertain spectators during half-time shows at football games. The band provided the musical arrangements for these shows. The girls practiced all summer and on into football season to be just perfect when they perform for the spectators. The girls raised money to send Kathy to camp in Indiana to learn new ideas for routines to be used this year. The Majorettes marched in numerous parades during the summer. Also, the majorettes showed great ability at the pep rallies before each game. Few people realize the time and hard work put into preparations necessary to march with the precision that our majorettes reach. CHEERLEADERS Left to Right: K. Sauchin, E. Jackowski, A. Resiter, J. Stanek, J. Morvay, S. Leith, R. Palimeri, H. Gribbin. Standing: N. Keeler, C. Slat Kneeling: J. Arendash, B. Prestia Let’s go Scott, Let’s fight! This was only one of the cheers that could be heard as the 1961-62 Cheerleaders, under the leadership of Kathryn Sauchin, lead their classmates during the football games, the basketball games, and the many pep rallies. Because the girls worked diligently during the past summer changing many of the cheers, they added a freshness to their performances. With their loyalty and fine performances the cheerleaders gave Scott High something to be proud of. We are grateful for their long tedious hours and congratulate them on a job well done. 92 “5-4-3-2-1-0 Blast off” “Oh! Isn’t he handsome?” BOWLING LEAGUE Awaiting their turn. Strike! This familiar term was heard very often on Wednesday afternoons at the Greater Valley Bowling Lanes. The Scott High Bowling League met here every week to compete for the trophies handed out at the end of the year by Mr. McCune. Even though the competition was rough, the boys and girls enjoyed themselves tremendously. For example, it wasn’t too unusual to see one of our bowlers rolling down the alley with the ball in his hand. Neither was it common to see someone beating his head against the pole when he had an open frame in the tenth. The first bowling season of Scott High was concluded with a banquet consisting of spaghetti and meat balls. After the banquet the students left Greater Valley Bowling Lanes to return again next September. Stiff competition. 94 96 SCOTT HIGH Third Row: J. Shimo, G. Turba, A. Beighly, R. Haberly, C. The Scott High Band was the organization responsible for these entertaining shows and the wonderful music. After football season, the band held its annual Spring Concert. This concert was held on May 2 and was a night that will be remembered for a long lime to come. The band played selections from various styles of music from opera to jazz. The concert also included a clarinet duet, a saxophone duet, and trumpet and piano solos. The band, besides its school activities, has also participated in various parades throughout the district. These parades included the Saint Patrick Day Parade, The Kennywood Parade, the Patrol Boy’s Parade, and the Halloween Parade. Professor Wolmelsdorf and the Scott High Band deserve the praise and gratitude of the entire school for their fine work and great performances. MARCHING BAND Third Row: R. Bridigum, R. Napolitan, M. This was our school chorus practicing for their annual performance at the Braddock Rotary Club. They also displayed their talents at our own school activities such as: Baccalaureate and Commencement services. Two members of the chorus were selected to represent Scott High School in the all County Chorus and State Chorus. They were Donna Reese and Gwendlyn Glaze. This year the chorus consisted of only juniors and seniors. Under the supervision of Mr. Womelsdorf, the chorus has done a fine job in representing Scott High School and we can truly say that we are very proud of them. 100 SOPHOMORE CHORUS Third Row: M. These practices seem to be responsible for a great deal of the success and good work of our orchestra. Without these practices, as noisy as they are, the orchestra would not have been able to give such tremendous performances at the Senior Play, the Senior Farewell, and Graduation. Even though the orchestra did not present a program of its own, it contributed to the success and approval of the other social activities sponsored by the school and its various organizations. Spisak 102 A 1 H L E T I C s FOOTBALL FOOTBALL As the 1962 football season began, the Scott High Raiders were not expected to win the state championship. The main factors in this pessimistic attitude were experience and size. The squad had very few lettermen returning. This meant that the remainder of the squad would be made up of boys with little or no experience. The 1962 version of the Raiders proved to be one of the smallest teams in years. Almost every team that the Raiders met was much larger than they. Despite this pessimistic attitude, the inexperienced Raiders put their entire heart into every game. Every game was a battle, from the 6 to 6 tie with Norwin to the exciting 19 to 20 loss to Braddock. In the Braddock game, our Raiders proved most proud. They gave Braddock the toughest struggle of the 1962 football campaign. Much of the praise showered upon our Raiders should go to the coaches, Mr. McCune, Mr. Celigoi, and Mr. Sutton. These three grid mentors took a small and unexperienced squad and molded it into a respectful football team. Despite the teams poor record of 2 wins, 3 losses, and 4 ties, we, the class of 1962 want to congratulate the 1962 football squad on a job well done. 1961 FOOTBALL RECORD Scott 6 Norwin Opponent 6 0 Duquesne 6 . 20 South Hills 20 23 Swissvale 0 7 Turtle Creek 7 7 Glassport 25 6 Homestead 6 26 Derry 13 19 Braddock 20 106 Football Action “Have a nice trip ” Game Highlights “Happy landing.” “Have a bite.” “Hey! Hardwood Hoopsters Everyone knows that basketball is a big man’s game. Almost every basketball team has a player who is well over six feet tall. This big man is the man the team depends on to score most of its points. However, the Scott High “Cagers” of 1962 could boast of no giant to score the greater proportion of their points. The small size of the team proved to be a great hinderance when it met teams with men who stood at heights of six feet three inches or over. For this reason our Raiders found victories hard to come by. Despite this lack of constant success, our boys never stopped trying. They never gave up no matter how great the defeat. Despite the record of the team, congratulations from the Class of 1962 are in store for them, our team. We can at least say that the boys went down fighting. Valentine BASEBALL With a 3 win and 7 loss record, the 1962 Scott High School Baseball team cannot be called sensational. However, the record does not really illustrate the success of the team. With one or two breaks in favor of Scott, the team’s record may have been reversed. Mr. Serrapede, rookie coach of Scott High’s baseball nine, did a good job with his inexperienced squad. He didn’t have any first line pitchers returning from 1961's squad and he was sure of only three positions: second base, center field, and catcher. These three positions were filled by the only three experienced boys on the squad. One thing that can be said of our team, they were determined to do their best. Since they did their best, they should not be criticized, but congratulated. Therefore the class of 1962 salutes the baseball team on a job well done. Although the boys were not very successful they played their best and deserve congratulations for their achievements. 120 Practicing. ATHLETE OF THE YEAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Each year at Scott High an award is presented to the outstanding athlete of the past year. This is the Nicholas Stefko athlete of the year award. The outstanding athlete at Scott High for 1962 was Robert Garritano. Bob was a rugged lineman on the football squad. He also had the honor of being co-captain. “Boat ’ was the power behind the Raider’s line. Bob played his best every game. Even injuries didn’t slow him up. Opposing ball carriers dreaded the times when they had to run through “Boat’s” side of the line. Bob, the class of 1962 salutes you. 121 “Excuse my elbow.” Room 4, Intramural Basketball Champs SENIOR PLAY Jimmy Dorsey??? On November 17, the Senior Class of 1962 presented the delightful comedy entitled, “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis”. Once again the play was superbly directed by Miss Helen Miller of the English department. The play centered on Dobie Gillis, a boy who thought himself a real Romeo. The plot revolved around the hilarious situations which arose from Dobie’s passion for girls. After two hours of laughs, chuckles, and smiles, all of Dobie’s problems were solved. One of the largest audiences of all time enjoyed the play immensely. Everyone went away singing praises of the cast. All the teen-agers in the audience enjoyed the play, for it was not difficult to substitute their own experiences for those of the characters. We all must agree with the little girl who said, “I never laughed so hard.” Congratulations Class of 1962! On Stage ! The many hours of rehearsal paid off. A grand entrance by Limbo Lamb. Bob puts feeling into his part. Moments we shared Trials and tribulations of Dobie Gillis. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ 11 v The “Schottish Five” was a hit. ATHLETIC BANQUET The keynote speaker. The gala event was held on February 22, 1962, in the gymnasium. The gym was transformed into a colonial background through the efforts of the Art Club and the Student Council, to commemorate George Washington’s birthday. The girls looked lovely in their pastel gowns, dancing with their handsome partners to the music of Tommy Paine. The climax of the evening was the coronation of the queen, Janet Elkin. The queen’s court consisted of Adelita Coulter, Janet Rogel, Mary Pat Spadero, and Eileen Ragen. The queen was crowned on her throne which was a colonial swing. After the crowning the Community President presented the queen with a bouquet of roses. Sharing her glory, the queen’s escort Jerry Skurscenski proudly watched as Janet and Bob Safran led ofT the next dance. Memories are made of this. Candids 130 Fast or Slow—To each his own. PROM The beginning of a wonderful evening. The Queen: Elaine Anderson. The Edgewood Country Club was the scene of the Scott High Prom of 1962. On April 27, 52 couples as well as members of administration and faculty danced to the music of Jimmy Hollywood and his orchestra. The hi-light of the evening was the crowning of the queen, Elaine Anderson. She was crowned by Robert Safran, the Student Council President, who presented her with one dozen long stemmed red roses. The girls were seen in gowns of many pastel colors ranging from ballerina to floor length. After the Prom the majority of the couples went to Taylors Restaurant, where they dined and danced until four. April 27 will hold many happy memories for all who attended the Junior Prom of 1962. 135 136 Moments to remember. There were many beautiful gowns. Follow the leader? Carolyn received this honor for her high rating on the examination sponsored by the General Mills Corporation. Because of her fine grade, she is eligible to compete in the state finals. Carolyn will graduate on the commercial course. Her activities are highlighted by her role as majorette.
