JUST FILL YOUR NICHE Despite the cries of alarm, it's a pretty good world you're going out into. Yes, it is beset by a lot of international squabbling and tensions into which we as a nation have been plunged. But then, this is the price of leadership. This is the sum which liberty costs us — a perpetual alertness and unfeigning willingness to lend a hand to our freedom-loving neighbors anywhere in the world. And this will be your role too — to work hard in preserving your personal freedoms so that our national freedoms always will enjoy robust health. And to that end, you will always be standing at a crossroads with a decision ahead of you. Today, it's whether you should take the road leading to college or the one taking you to a job. The many choices which now you must begin making reminds me of a monument I saw on a visit some years ago to West Point, high above the Hudson River in New York State. The monument is a four-sided obelisk with a recess carved into each side. In three of these niches is placed the marble bust of a famous American who made a lasting contribution to the future of his country. The fourth niche is bare and underneath is inscribed words which read something like this — ''Except for one decision, the most important decision of his life, this space would honor the memory of Benedict Arnold. Well, we all know what that decsion was. And certainly few of us will have to make such a grave decision as one affecting our nation or our loyalty to it. But each of you will be called upon, time and again, to make a choice ... to decide between alternatives ... to pick A or B. And in each of these choosings, I can offer but one suggestion — know where you want to go, and keep trying to fill your niche. Sincerely yours, CURTIS J. CLAY
