“
THE 1961 presented by THE SENIOR CLASS SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL NORTH BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA The Graduating Class of 1961 has reached a crossroads in the road of life. Behind us are three years of high school — the party's over for us, so to speak. In our three years at Scott we have had fun, shared laughter, a few tears, but most important of all, we have received an education that has molded our character and personality in these, the formative years of our lives. We have been guided down this sometimes bumpy always ascending road by a truly great group of teachers and administrative personnel. Before us we have our choice of many roads leading to a variety of jobs, careers, and vocations in the complex adult world. We are grateful for the training we have received in preparation for this journey. We will take one of these one-way roads but we will never be able to come back to our real starting point — Scott High School. The purpose of this yearbook is to preserve the memories of our trip through Scott High and to provide a road map for the future travelers, the underclassmen, to whom we wish all possible future happiness. It would be virtually impossible to pic-torially record all the happy moments of the past year but we have tried to capture the real spirit of enthusiasm of the Class of 1961 by careful selection of pictures and articles. We hope that you enjoy reading the book as much as we enjoyed working on it. JUST FILL YOUR NICHE Despite the cries of alarm, it's a pretty good world you're going out into. Yes, it is beset by a lot of international squabbling and tensions into which we as a nation have been plunged. But then, this is the price of leadership. This is the sum which liberty costs us — a perpetual alertness and unfeigning willingness to lend a hand to our freedom-loving neighbors anywhere in the world. And this will be your role too — to work hard in preserving your personal freedoms so that our national freedoms always will enjoy robust health. And to that end, you will always be standing at a crossroads with a decision ahead of you. Today, it's whether you should take the road leading to college or the one taking you to a job. The many choices which now you must begin making reminds me of a monument I saw on a visit some years ago to West Point, high above the Hudson River in New York State. The monument is a four-sided obelisk with a recess carved into each side. In three of these niches is placed the marble bust of a famous American who made a lasting contribution to the future of his country. The fourth niche is bare and underneath is inscribed words which read something like this — ''Except for one decision, the most important decision of his life, this space would honor the memory of Benedict Arnold. Well, we all know what that decsion was. And certainly few of us will have to make such a grave decision as one affecting our nation or our loyalty to it. But each of you will be called upon, time and again, to make a choice ... to decide between alternatives ... to pick A or B. And in each of these choosings, I can offer but one suggestion — know where you want to go, and keep trying to fill your niche. Sincerely yours, CURTIS J. Our Community President, James Guerrieri, proved himself to be o very capable ond dependable leader. The council often drew on the weolth of experience they had available in Mr. Rudolph Celigoi, their faculty advisor. With the help of Mr. Celigoi, Jim and the rest of the council planned a number of very fine events for the student body. An example of this planning was our midwinter dance. The council arranged for the orchestra and co-ordinated the decorating efforts of the seniors and the Art Club. In addition to this work, the senior council members were given an extra duty. These members had to collect the proposed seating lists for the Senior Banquet and from these they made the seating plan. The Highlander congratulates the council on a job well done. Kopelcheck The publication of a yearbook requires a great deal of time and effort. The 1961 Highlander was no exception and the staff worked willingly from the time the cover was picked until the book was distributed. The story of the 1961 Highlander begins last September, when the editor, Barbara Kopelcheck, the faculty advisor, Mr. Peairs, and the editorial staff met to plan the theme of the book. Then the editorial staff selected the striking cover which adorns this issue. While all this was going on, preparations began for the football season. The Highlander operated three refreshment stands at both Scott and Braddock home games. The sale of refreshments and other articles enabled us to offer the Highlander at a reduced price. Many hours were spent in producing the book. 72 Top Row: R. Quoley, W. Dudo, K. Sauchin, R. Rogel, C. Atkinson, M. Bolton, G. Hulick, N. Mc-Conville, L. Rouse 1st Row: B. Swartz, M. Corletti, T. After the football season ended the editorial staff met several times each week to lay out the position of the pictures and write-ups in the dummy binder. The next big job was to get the pictures taken. Some of the pictures were taken by Colao Studios, but a large portion of them were taken by Mr. Rogers and Mr. Peairs. Now that the staff had something concrete to work with they began to sort and select pictures and edit and rewrite articles. After the book was pasted up and sent to the publisher, the staff sat back and remembered the good times they had while working on the book. They hope that you enjoy reading it as much as they enjoyed making it. Top Row: J. Dudo, E. Jackowski, W. Duda, J. Moyer, M. Kuzmic, B. Swartz, D. Krol, T. Glunt, B. Safran, P. O'Connell, K. The Tartan was a huge success again this year. Yes, the Tartan, the awardwinning Scott High School newspaper, has completed another year of reporting all the news on the Scott High scene. From the striking Tartan banner on the front page to the last line on the last page, this news- paper was packed with a great variety of interesting and noteworthy articles on spo'is, school activities, and even world events. These articles were complimented by many sharp clear photographs, which were taken with the Tartan's new Polaroid camera, Miss Rachel D'Urso, the faculty advisor, proved invaluable as a personnel director. Shirley Chuba, as editor, has worked hard at keeping up the traditionally high standards of the paper. Not only did the entire staff give freely of their own time for the make-up of the paper, but they also sold refreshments at the Junior High games to curtail operating expenses. Congratulations, you have an organization that you can be proud of. 74 Shirley Chuba • editor. Miss D'Urso supervises the typing of the copy. SENIOR COLLEGE CLUB SENIOR COLLEGE CLUB Top Row: J. Partilla The Senior College Club was perhaps the most useful organization in Scott High this year, for it helped to prepare our departing seniors for their college years which lie ahead. Under the guidance of Mr. Hillenbrand, the seniors took many tests to determine what occupational field they were best suited for. These tests also prepared them for the difficult College Board test they took to get odmitted to a college or university. During the course of the year many representatives of colleges and universities came to Scott to familiarize the students with their respective schools. Most of these representatives came on College Night. This night was set aside for this purpose. However, some of the speakers came to meeting of the club and presented their talks. The Senior College Club has undoubtedly given our seniors the background they need to succeed in a college or university. 76 Officers: F. Amatea, P. Stanek, M. Mr. Hillenbrand arranged many tests for the juniors to take. Among these were the National Merit and a test given by Juniata College. These tests were given in the cafeteria under the direction of Mr. Hillenbrand. He also helped the juniors make arrangements for taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test, better known as the College Boards. All the members of this club participated in College Night. This was a night set aside for representatives of different colleges and universities to come to Scott and try to interest the students in their colleges. Another special occasion in which this club participated was Career Night. On this night, men and women in various occupational fields came to Scott and tried to help the students select their careers. Career Night. 77 FUTURE NURSES CLUB FUTURE NURSES CLUB Top Row: H. This club is another that is designed to help students explore the careers of their choice. Under the capable supervision of Mrs. Corcoran, the members were given tests designed to acquaint them with entrance examinations into nursing. Each member also had an opportunity to visit the hospitals in the local area. These tours were conducted by the hospitals, and they proved to be very informative to the girls. The members of the club participated in a five-week training course called the Monitor Training Program. This course taught the girls the fundamental steps to follow when babysitting with a young child stricken with cerebral palsy or other crippling diseases. Working diligently throughout the past summer, the girls created all new routines which added a fresh note to our football and basketball games as well as ihe pep rallies. All the work and time that these girls put into the new routines could certainly be witnessed at any one of our games. Another feature which added a new spark to our cheerleaders were their new uniforms which they obtained through the School Board. With the help of the new routines and uniforms the girls led their classmates in cheering the football and basketball players to a very successful season. A section was roped off at the games in the bleachers, as well as in the auditorium, so that the girls could sit together and add body to the cheers. During football season the girls purchased blue and white plastic jackets to wear at the games. After football season, they purchased white sweatshirts with blue letters to wear at the basketball games. Miss Schestack, a member of the English department, served as faculty advisor and helped the girls get organized. Under the direction of the head majorette, Jean Par-tilla, the girls learned new routines and marches which were used to entertain the spectators during the half-time shows. The routines presented during half-time were done to musical arrangements played by the band. During the summer months and post-football sea- son, the majorettes marched in numerous parades and contests. Besides all of these activities, the majorettes also showed their high-stepping abilities at the pep rallies held before each game. Since good music and precision marching are not obtained without a great deal of work, during the summer Professor Womelsdorf held weekly band practices. As a result of these summer practice sessions, the half-time show at the opening football game was a complete success. The spectators immediately realized that the band was playing a new type of music — popular tunes with a Latin beat. The band with its new Latin beat added the musical atmosphere which helped to make the football games the successes that they were. After football season, the band had a fine concert and marching season. The Spring Concert was of a light classical nature with accents of Spanish music, popular instrumentals, and novelty numbers. Besides the Spring Concert, the band marched in three parades. Kennywood's opening day parade and the Memorial Day parade did not give competitive prizes, but in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade the band won a second place prize in the junior class. The band through its hard work and successful public appearances, has been a true asset to our school. 86 Pro directing the band. MARCHING BAND Top Row: R. Nopoliton, M. Tomasic, M. Masterosky, I. One of the newest groups formed this year at Scott was the choir. The members of the choir were a selected few juniors and seniors who were also in the chorus. It was formed at the mid-term with weekly practices held on Thursdays. Although we may consider practicing only once a week a handicap, we must also agree that the choir members have overcome this very well. They not only entertained our student body at many school affairs but they also sang at the Rotary Club in Braddock, Pa. Besides being received very graciously by the members they also were highly praised by all who attended this luncheon. We know that we will hear more from this talented group. We salute Mr. Womelsdorf and his fine singers for their wonderful performances and know that they will agree that the time spent practicing was well spent. 92 ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA Front Row: H. Wolfe At the beginning of the 1960 football season, the students, the coaches, and even the players had little hope of the Scott High Raiders even winning a football game. They did not dream of their becoming one of the top teams of the district. The main reason for their pessimism was the size of the team. With such featherweights as Drafty, weighing 150 pounds; DePalma, weight 145 pounds; and an over all team weight average not even comparing to that of any of our competitors, there seemed to be little hope for the Raiders. But the big surprise came in the opening game, when the Scott High Raiders played the Turtle Creek Creekers at the Scott High field. When the game was over, the scoreboard showed, Scott High 6, Turtle Creek 0. Consequently, that's the way it went for the rest of the season, due to the excellent coaching of our fine mentor, Mr. Mc-Cune, and his very capable staff, Mr. Celigoi and Mr. Sutton. This, and the outstanding playing of the whole team accounted for the fine record of victories. However, the Raiders did suffer one defeat — to Homstead, by a score of 13 to 7. But the highlight of the year came the night of the Scott-Braddock game. For the past six years our arch rival, Braddock, had beaten us. Whether it had been by a high score or by a low score, they had been successful. But this year, much to the joy of the Scott High fans, this was not the case. This year was our year to win, and win we did. With the final score reading Scott 19 — Braddock 12, there was no doubt as to which had been the better team. Barnhardt This year, the basketball team had a slow beginning but a very successful ending. During the first few exhibition games, the team showed little of its championship ability. These first losses can be attributed to the squad's inexperience and relatively small size. Little by little the players calmed down and started utilizing their terrific speed and agility as a substitute for their lack of height. The team's real turning point however, was the Brentwood Tournament. Here the squad defeated an extremely strong and tall Mount Lebanon team who later became the runner up for the State Championship title. This victory gave the team the extra spark that they needed. The rest of the story is self explanatory. With a record of 17 wins and only 6 losses, who could question the team's ability? This squad proved that intestinal fortitude — not height — wins basketball games. The problem was solved after two hours filled with laughs, chuckles and smile. The play was one in which everyone could identify himself with the characters involved. The teen-agers in the audience laughed at the implausible situation portrayed, while the older people smiled as they pictured their own families in the midst of such a problem. Slow, dreamy songs were intermingled with such dances as the Bunny Hop and 'The Mexican Hat Dance. The apparel of the evening was formal. The gowns worn by the girls varied from long floor length gowns to short ballerina lengths of many pastel shades. Tuxedoes of various colors were worn by the escorts of each girl. Pictures of this memorable occasion were taken by Colao Studios. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of the 1961 Prom Queen. Seven Junior girls were the candidates and from these seven, Janet Elkin was chosen. She was crowned by Marie Ball, the 1960 Prom Queen. The remainder of the evening was spent dancing to many of our favorite songs. As the last song stated, 'The Party's Over, but the party will not be forgotten. Each school year, the General Mills Corporation gives an examination to every senior girl in the United States. The purpose of this examination is to select a National Future Homemaker of the Year. The Scott High School winner of the Homemaker of the Year award for 1961, was Lucretia Dixon. Lucretia, along with all the other senior girls, took a written examination consisting of many difficult questions. Having scored the highest number of points on the test, Lucretia thus gained the honor. She has a high scholastic standing, and is well-liked by all of her fellow students. The members of the Senior Class want to congratulate Lucretia on her achievement, and wish her added success in her role as a future homemaker. 141 Fashion magazines prove helpful to Lucretia. ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Each year at Scott High an award is presented to the outstanding athlete of the past year. This is the Athlete of the Year award. This year this award was presented to Paul Stanek. In his three years at Scott, Paul earned letters in all three major sports — football, baseball, and basketball. In football he quarterbacked our Raiders to a successful season. He did everything well that a quarterback should do. In baseball he was varsity catcher for two years. He made few errors and was the spark of the team on the field. Not only was Paul tops defensively, but he was our top hitter. On the basketball court Paul again proved to be a spark plug. He was a back court star, playing heads-up ball all through the game. Paul Stanek truly deserves to be called the Athlete of the Year at Scott High for 1961. d i . the Athlete of the Year award.
