THE The Graduating Class of 1960 presents their edition of the Scott High School Yearbook. Throughout the book we have tried to show both the work and the recreation we have experienced here. During our school days, these experiences were blended to enable every student an equal opportunity to realize each. We are deeply indebted to our excellent administration for working this balance out so accurately. With patience and understanding, they have helped us through the many trials which confronted us. They performed these tasks, not because they felt obligated, but because they had a sincere and honest interest in the students. We are also thankful to our Board of Education for their guidance without which we would never have reached the high position we now occupy. As the years swiftly pass, this book will serve as a memoir to us. By looking back through it we will try to recapture, if only for a moment, the feelings of freedom and achievement which we felt in those hallowed halls of our “Alma Mater.” The three wonderful years we spent at Scott will never be recaptured. As we pass through these halls for the last time as students, we wish our underclassmen rewarding and memorable years. Human experience has always been a race with catastrophe. But never has a race been so close, or the threatening catastrophe so overwhelming and so universal. Certainly education has never faced the challenges it faces today. Never have the stakes been greater, never a time when we need to think bigger, deeper, and higher than we need to think now. The greatest asset to our nation and our country is our youth. They build the future and they in truth are the future. Each student must have the opportunity to develop his capacity to the fullest for his own benefit as an individual and for the best interest of all of us as a nation. He must be content to start—and start in a small way, gradually working his way to responsibility and success. Sincerely yours, CURTIS J. CLAY College night at Scott. Dr. Clay in Indiana College room. 10 SCOTT HIGH PRINCIPAL Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1960! When you leave the class-rooms of Scott High School, we hope that you will not think that your education is completed because, in reality, is should only be starting. The word “education” is derived from a Latin verb, “educo,” which means to lead forth or lead out. In high school, we have tried to lead you out or lead you forth to show you the way to greater learning or greater possibilities in life. Whether you go on to a higher institution of learning, enter the business world, or go into one of the armed services, we hope that you will keep your minds alert and always endeavor to increase your mental growth. In doing, you will not only add to your own happiness but you will also be better citizens in this great country of ours. Eugene W. Kirschner is vitally interested that every child in the schools shall have the opportunity to cultivate his talents and abilities to his best interest. All educators reali p that one of the most important functions of education is to have each child work to the limit of his capacity. To gear the class to the ability of the average pupil means that the exceptional pupil wastes time and becomes disinterested because of the repetitions required for the pupil of average ability; and, at the same time the pupil of lower ability becomes disinterested because the subject matter being taught is beyond his comprehension. For that reason students of the North Braddock Schools are being put into groups according to their ability. Courses of study are being revised and provisions are being made for teaching each group on the level on which it can learn. In this way every students will be better prepared for entrance into college or into the position which he might take after he leaves high school. 22 Mr. Hillenbrand ROGER AIELLO ROY ANDERSON noRBRA hiqh to thee ARNE ALM JANE ANDERSON BETTY ANDREWS AUDREY ANDRASCIK 24 we ALL AR6 LoyAL, 25 anO rmy thy 26 colors cvcr wave. 27 ovep All the bra vest 28 An the tRuest BARBARA COLE JAMES COULTER SYLVIA COOLEY PATRICIA COPELAND LINDA CORLETTI 29 thy deal? mme pRom 30 OishonoR we will save. 31 oh! noRBRA high, PEGGY GEORGE 32 A BERNARD HABARKA £ 6ar noRBRA high, 33 thy name shAll eveR 34 loved And honoRed Be 35 oh! nORBRA hlQh, 36 C 6AR nORBRA hlQh, 37 FRED KREHELY STEVE KRIVY DONNA KROHE we’LL always qive THOMAS KUKLA PEGGY LESLIE MICHALENE KWOLEK 38 honoR to thee. 39 when no mone within 40 thy walls we linqeR, 41 stiLL scenes shAll 42 6weLL in memoRy Cigar, 43 when then the caces of 44 Life have come to save us 45 thoughts of thee then shall. 46 fill our heaRts with cheeR. 47 oh! noRBRA high. Homemaking Award The General Mills Corporation annually gives an examination to all senior girls in the United States for the purpose of selecting a National Future Homemaker of the Year. This year’s future homemaker from Scott High School was Rosemarie Kostyak. Rosemarie gained the honor by placing first in her competition with the other ninety-six senior girls. She has a high scholastic standing and is well liked by all her fellow students. All of her classmates wish her the best of luck in her role as a Future Homemaker. 69 Future Teachers of America 3rd Row: D. Walter , J. Kotva , B. Elliott, J. Huen, P. Stanek, B. Tosh, R. Aiello, B. The 1960 yearbook staff, under the direction of Ken Puhala, has worked extremely hard to produce the best yearbook yet. With the help of their advisor, Mr. Peairs, they created new and interesting ways to increase their funds. In addition to selling refreshments at all of the football games, they also sold Christmas cards and stationery. Few people realize all the hard work and many hours required to produce a yearbook; this year they put many extra hours in to add the little things which we hope will make this edition stand out from the rest. Under the direction of the editor-in-chief, Audrey Andrascik, the newspaper staff worked very hard to achieve success. Another contributing factor was the help given the staff by their capable advisor, Miss D’Urso. Many members of the staff sold refreshments at the junior high school football and basketball games to help finance the newspaper. The students wish that other newspaper staffs in the future will do as well and have as much success as this year’s group. 73 Majorettes The Scott High School Majorettes, under the capable leadership of the 1959-60 head majorette, Judy Bakalon, strutted to the end of a very successful season. During the summer they participated in numerous parades in the surrounding communities. Working simultaneously with the band during football season, they performed many enjoyable half time programs which displayed the versatility and ingenuity of our majorettes. Besides the regular home games they had the double honor of attending two away games. Few people realize the tedious preparation and the long hours of practice that it takes to achieve this precision and accuracy. We salute them for their wonderful job. 5th Row: E. Brunk, D. Pulit, M. Scott High School was very proud of the fine performance of its cheerleaders this season. Under the direction of the head cheerleader, Kitty McCann, the girls led their classmates in cheers that not only roused the players’ morale, but also led them to many victories. They cheered their way through the many pep rallies, and football and basketball games in the best manner of all the cheerleaders so far seen in our school. We are all grateful for the support our boys received from our cheerleaders and congratulate them on a job well done. Our cheerleaders cheering their hearts out. 76 Our cheerleaders at the pep rally. Prosba, This year’s band was composed of fifty-five members. Although ten musicians graduated last year, the freshmen did a fine job in filling the vacant positions. Under the direction of Mr. Womelsdorf, the band had an excellent variety of football shows. Such shows as “A Salute to Victor Herbert”, “A Precision Drill”, and “Let’s Dance” were presented. While Mr. Womelsdorf was in the hospital, his assistant Mr. Haberman, directed the band rehearsals. Had it not been for Mr. Haberman, the annual Spring Concert might have been postponed. The theme of the concert was music of different periods in history. Since the football shows were novel and entertaining and the concert was a success, we feel the band had a fine year. 78 Our head majorette, Judy Bakalon Marching Band 3rd Row: S. Betts, J. Knapp, R. Orchestra Senior Play - “No More Homework” SENIOR PLAY The Class of 1960 scored an immediate success with the presentation of its rollicking senior play, No More Homework. The play came alive as the cast portrayed—with evident relish —situations about which every high school student has dreamed. It all began when circumstances forced three high school students into the roles of principal, vice-principal, and school secretary in a typical high school. The superb cast, under the excellent direction of Miss Helen Miller, evoked tears of laughter from the students in the audience, while the oldsters chuckled reminiscently. As the audience filed laughingly from the auditorium one overheard comments such as, “This is the best play Scott has ever presented!” 3rd Row: W. Boros, H. Robbins, C. Huen, F. Mramor, T. The three spirits of Christmas, which appeared to Scrooge, served to remind the students of the meaning of Christmas. The afternoon festivities included parties in the home rooms where refreshments were served, and teachers were given gifts by their homeroom students. After everyone had enjoyed their refreshments, they visited other rooms and spread Christmas cheer and exchanged greetings. A much anticipated two-week vacation began at the conclusion of these activities. The Christmas Play. Singing Christmas Carols in Room 2. Christmas fun in Biology. SNOWBALL This year’s winter season was highlighted by the annual Snowball Dance held in the school gymnasium. Mr. Wilt’s art classes transformed the gym into a winter wonderland for the occasion. The height of the evening was the crowning of the Snow Queen, Rose Kostyak, who reigned during the evening with her five attendants. All who attended agreed that it was a most memorable evening. The Scott High “Raiders” had an outstanding 1959 football season, coming through with a fine record of seven wins and two losses. Challenging class A teams included on the schedule tested the skill and playing endurance of the Raiders as they ably coped with their opponents. They gave every fan a thrill with their skill and speed as they handled the ball with ease and dexterity. A large and fast line combined with a determined and powerful back-field, characterized our team and spelled trouble for our opponents. The Golf Club was formed this year to promote and develop an interest and ability in the game of golf. The first officers of the club were Ronald MacFarland, President; Mark Magda, Secretary; and Ted Koncsol, Treasurer. The club meets bi-monthly, and at the meetings various points of golf etiquette, rules and techniques are discussed. Several local professionals and outstanding amateurs have visited the groups, giving lessons and pointers on the game. The club held several golf parties with prizes given for three different events: Low net score, longest drive, and closest to the pin. The club also constructed an Indoor Practice Cage which will enable the “Sweet-Swingers,” as the members are nicknamed, to keep in practice all winter long. 104 Ron takes a practice swing.
