After posting fine records while playing in the Prairie View Interscholastic League, the recent Bulldog athletic teams have fallen on hard times. Craddock is the head baseball coach at Scott, plus being the junior varsity football mentor. He is also the chief scout for the Bulldogs during the gridiron season. I like winning, said Craddockf' This losing just isn t my idea of coaching. We all expected things to be tougher in the new league but unless things start changing, my career record here at Scott will be destroyed. Craddock is speaking of his first five years at Emmett Scott. His baseball clubs posted an overall record of 43-23. Dawson ,, Hobb Last' spring, the 'Dogs debut in 13-AAAA found the Scott nine finishing 3-11 for the year. This year things also are also starting out rough with 'Sa 2-4 reading for the spring. A combination of things have led to the present state of affairs at Scott. Players have moved away, left the squad and a few key injuries almost have destroyed Craddock's 96 efforts. I He has only two seniors on the entire baseball squad leaving him seven starters for next year. Craddock is hopeful everyone will stay healthy, happy and settled until the 1971 campaign. The 38-year-old Bulldog coach, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High in Mount Pleasant, feels the next edition of Scott gridders will be a much improved team. We should be a lot stronger, said Craddock, because of the return of Charles Dewberry at quarterback and a fine group of junior varsity players. Scott's JV 'head-hunters' who Craddock mcntored last year have some outstanding performers who could make a dif- ference in the season record. Since entering the tougher competition the Bulldogs have had identical football marks of 2-7. This has been quite a letdown from district title winners in both 1964 and 1965 along with a constant winning record during the school's involve- ment in the PVIL. Under tJamesJ Beal the players have had to learn a new system, said Craddock, plus learn to play against tougher opponents. Beal has been patient in teaching this system. This season should start showing the results. Craddock is no stranger to football. He attended Texas College two years from 1950 to 1951 before serving four years in the military service. He returned to TC to complete his collegiate career in 1957. Starting at halfback the last two years Craddock earned All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors his junior year, along with honorable mention honors- his senior campaign. One of his biggest collegiate highlights was playing against Willie Galimore, a standout with the Chicago Bears. Things may be rough for Craddock and other Bulldog coaches. However, determination, along with the desire to win may change the athletic picture shortly. No coach likes to lose, especially one who has a winning habit.
