Sharp Guard is the name of the U.N.. Operation charged with enforcing trade sanctions against the former Yugoslavia. No ships carrying prohib- 1ted cargoes, that would support the war efforts, are al- lowed into or out of former Yugoslavian ports. SCOTT is a part of the task group stationed off the Montenegran coast. SC.OTT'S duties as a part of Sharp Guard include the sur- veillance of surface contacts, identifying contacts of inter- est, and boarding vessels which might be breaking the em- bargo. Deny Flight is the U.N. mission that is enforcing the No-Fly zone over Bosnia-Hercegovina. SCOTT's mission is to provide surveillance support for the entire airspace over the southern Adriatic. All aircraft which fly into SCOTT's area of responsibility must check in before con- tinuing on their missions. in Adl13t1C The Nodolkb s d gulded ms sIle lcstroyer USS Stott QDDG .3953 has I0 ned eight other North Allan tIc T eaty O ganwat on countnes pat oll lg the Adrlatc Sea In sup- p rt If Umtcd Nat ns operat ons Sh'Irpt I aId and Deny Fhghl In addnto Scott has been as slgned as Itedcrown a deslgna ton lcnot ng the sl Ip role as p rt fOpcr l I1 Dc ylfhghttogrovtde rvcll.I ce llpp rt for the ar p ce over the southem Adnatlc All axrcraft that l'ly Into Scott s are of responslb lIty must check In wlth Itedcrown before eontmuxng on the r mlss ons Operation Sharp Guard IS the ch rged wth enf re ng t ade s nc t on aga nst the former Yugosla a as outl ned In Umtcd Nations reso lutIons Any shIps can-ymg prohIb Ited cargoes that would support the war efforts are not allowed Into or o t of fonner Yugoslavlan ports ln order to prevent shlps from nlenng or lcavmg those ports multmatlonal task groups are post honed throughout the Adnatnc Scott IS pan. of the task group sta to ed off tle Montenegran coast The shnps dut cs as part of Sharp Cuard Include surveIllance of sur fac contacts dentafylng contacts f Interest and boardmg vessels that m ght be vlolahng the embar go rul s Scott completed It first boardlng of a suspected vessel on Sept 26 usI g thc h ps 'VlSIl board ng ea ch a Id alvagc team Al whllc p.Itroll ng In the same area Sea ops Scott pa 1I:-Ipated n the rescue of seven All 1I n refugees when thelr boat ran out of gas whlle trying to ross the AdrIatIc mto ltaly The refugees were plcked up the ltala Coat Guard base on coordmates sup plIcd by Scott Opcratmn De y Fhght IS the UN musslon e forcnng the no fly one over B nIa llerzegovma Multmatnonal I nd based and cam er aIrcraft t'ly urveIlIance mnsslons over and amund Bosma ensunng no unauthomed ll ghLs take place over the war tom country Addl tIonally Scott pl'0Vld8S an anti aIr warfare umbrella for shnps operal JoInt Task Group Amenca On an average day Scott IS sponslble for tracking and Ieport Ing of 1000 aIr contacts Lastly the Shlp IS responslble for coordmatlon of the computer to computer data lInk that provudes all shIps and aIr craft of the task force wnth a smgle combmed radar pIcture Scott IS the all Important Interface between the multInatIonal aIr forces and na VICS Watchslanders In Scott s combat ll'lf0l'YI18ll0I'l center are contlnuous ly categonzmg and collatmg post tIon Informatmn on sh ps and mr craft commumcatmg on radlos wlth people from many dnfferent countnes and managmg the data lmk and radar pncture TechnIcIans from the combat systems depart ment are busy mamtammg radars mdnos computers and weapons systems whIle bndge watch standers dnllgently monItor and query merchant shIps USS Scott s Temnnatnrs are on the job day and mght, In sup- port of the multmatnonal effort to e force Umted Natmns sanetmns I I U O - a e I ' - i.- I i .' 1 .
