HERE ARE FANIILIAR NTRANC UILDI NG ,,-..,..,,,,, --:.g'i--fimgftt FOREWORD As in previous years, this, the four- teenth volume of TAPS, comprises a written and pictorial resume of the past school year. Within its pages are recreated the familiar buildings, the beautiful grounds the devoted staff, the multiple activities, and the many friends and classmates you will never want to forget. May this book ever be a source of delightful memories that will span the miles and the years that will separate you from each other and from the scenes, the events, and the activities that once you shared. if'1-::51'Psa1:Z.:: i:E::.'ifi-3,2 5'ES:.n :3535125215:saeffiiE:sE2'ii:E:EEi'E55E?fii j2i2,,5,g5?::g, QQi: taax,i2ff5g2' ::ax..gpfTs::a.. ' SCOTLAND SCHOOL FOR VETERANS CHILDREN -LN' ..., , T I SCENES OF SCOTLAND sci-tool, I a I I VOCATIONAL BUILDING SWIMMING POOL THE BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS SCHOOL AUDITORIUM COTTAGE N I NETEEN WE KNEW SO WELL LEAFY SENTINELS WATER TOWERS SCHOOL MARKER ALMA NIATER Here is the old school, our Alma Mater, quietly waiting behind its can- opy of green for the frenzied activity that will mark the sound of the first bell. Down the walk we came for many y e a r s - eager skipping first graders, reluctant awkward freshmen, and finally, poised intent seniors. ln its fine classrooms, its library, and its shops we grew, we learned and we matured. Now we eagerly await our release from its restraint and firm dis- cipline but sober reflection keeps re- minding us that we will miss the old school. HERE ARE THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SO CAPABLY DIRECT AND MANAGE THE AFFAIRS OF OUR SCHOOL. A BOARD OF TRUSTEES WITH VISION, ADMINISTRA- TORS AND SUPERVISORS WITH DISCERN- MENT AND UNDERSTANDING, AN EXPE- RIENCED AND PATIENT FACULTY, AND A DEDICATED STAFF, EACH DEVOTING THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TO THE PROP- ER DEVELOPMENT OF THE BOYS AND GIRLS PLACED IN THEIR CARE. PRESIDENT Judge William S. Rahauser BOARD OF TRUSTEES The management, the development, and the progress of Scotland School is the deep concern of each of these nine men and women who serve on the Board of Trustees. All hold important and responsible positions in government, in the professions, or in the business world, and all are veterans or have held high office in the veteran's organiza- tions. Their interest, experience, judgement, and complete cooperation with the administration of our school have been a factor in making it the finest institution of its type for the care and training of boys and girls. ' fzi.pgq,Eyngqxgggzgi 2 HERE ARE THE ATHLETIC TEAMS THAT HAVE SO ABLY UPHELD THE PROUD TRADITION OF GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BUILT UP BY SCOTLAND SCHOOL OVER MANY YEARS OF ACTIVE COMPETITION. NO SCHOOL OUR SIZE IN THE STATE CAN BOAST OF A SPORTS PROGRAM THAT IS MORE COMPLETE. COUNTY AND DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE COMMONPLACE, WINNING SEASONS THE RULE, AND OUR TROPHY CASE IS BE- GINNING TO BULGE. THE TEAMS OF THE 1961-62 SEASON HAVE ADDED TO THESE LAURELS. VARSITY FOOTBALL COACH PECK gives his proteges a few well chosen words at half time. Co-Captain Woods, Coach Katusin, Co-Captain McClinn- han, Coach Peck, Co-Captain McCleaf, VARSITY FOOTBALL was big this year as our fast aggressive team fought through a tough schedule for a great win seven lose three season. The Cadets rolled over Ship- pensburg, Waynesboro, Orbisonia, Carson Long, Ju-niata Joint, Biglerville, and Boons- boro. They lost to Big Spring, Southwestern, and Enola in close hard fought games. ln all the Scotland aggregation scored 2ll points to the opponents 7l. Front Row: Kennedy, Parker, P. Third Row: Deavers, Wolfe, McClinnhan, McCleaf, Hockenberry, Ross, Young, Aldridge, Henry, Eyer. Back Row: Coach Peck, Hanyon, 66 Christ, Jones, Coach Katusin. LLOYD ALDRIDGE, shifty Cadet half- back, seems to be without friends in this shot but on many other occasions he turned that corner and was away for long gains. With Smith, Young, and Howard moving the ball well also, the Cadets displayed a powerful of- fense that riddled opponents' lines and put them in the win column on many a Saturday afternoon. Great defensive play also thrilled the cheering stands throughout the season. Here RICK DUBOSE and TOM SHAFER team up to thoroughly discourage a Big Spring lad who had visions of a sure touchdown in mind. Bill Fink, Butch McCleaf, Jim McClinn- han, Dean Kennedy, and Bob Hollinger were also great on defense. 67 E E X 2 7' s K s 7 z E 5 x 4 K X x x x -C 5 5 E 5 3' E K 2 : bl 2 4 5 P 5 ST K 2 5 :- X K X -4 :- :- P x aw it E : 3 E X I D' K THE VARSITY GO TEAM ready to move. Junior High A young, green, lightweight Junior High team played its heart out during this year and came out of it with a win three lose six record. When they could generate an-offense they looked good especially when they thumped Waynesboro, Washington Township, and Biglerville. 70 Junior Varsitu There was little to shout about in the way of glorious victories for the J. V. team this year since they won only two in a very rough eight game sched- ule. However, there was a lot of foot- ball played by this squad and they showed a powerful offense at times. The varsity coaches are anticipating some fine talent to move up and, after all, this is what J. V. football is for. THE CLEANEST TOWN IN THE WEST, a one act comedy, A MODERN THANKSGIVING, a holiday play, and the big three act THE SKELETON WALKS were all smash hits. Aldridge, A. Mrs. Stewart gives a scream lesson during rehearsal for THE SKELETON WALKS. Everyone but Doug seems pleased that George remembered his lines. Sheriff Doug Woods protects the fair in his best Paladin manner. VOCAL MUSIC The vocal music groups, as usual, were quite busy from September until June. Whenever talent was needed, wherever singing was in order, there was some com- bination of young voices to fill the bill. Soloists, a boys' quartet, a girls' sextet, a church choir, or the larger choral groups were ready to perform at any function both at the school or in the area. The annual Christmas and Spring Concerts which feature the finest voices in the stu- dent body were especially well done this year. MRS. CONSTANCE l-IAULMAN Choral Director MIXED CHORUS Front Row: L. The SCOTLAND COURIER is eagerly awaited each month, not only by the stu- dent body and staff, but by friends and alumni from all over the United States. lt is unique among school papers in that it is written and published entirely by our own students. Copy is prepared and edit- ed in the classroom and the complete printing process is accomplished in our own shop. Judy Wall, James Howard and Sondra Eshle- man get some help in the preparation of copy from Miss Helen Miller, Faculty Advisor. Senior printers, William Brown and John Herr, assist Mr. Sanders, Printing Instructor, with lost minute adjustments to the offset press. YEARBOCJK William Fink, Alice Negley, James Christ, Bertha Miller and Bonnie Weigel begin the long process of sorting the copy and pictures that go to make up a yearbook. We who have been working closely with this year- book, TAPS for' l962, have grown mighty fond of it through association. We know that it will not inspire the same feeling in all readers, but if our book meets with your approval, if you think it has done what we planned for it to do, then the staff feels amply repaid for all its labor. Kathy Deyarmin and Calvin McCleaf get a few words of wisdom about design and layout from Mr. Boss, Art Supervisor.
