It was in September 1959 that Mrs. Powers joined our high school faculty and began teaching social studies. Although she specialized in American History for most of her career, in the last several school terms she has been better known for her work with the senior elective courses, Humanities, American Culture, and Minority Studies. In addition to her classroom teaching, Mrs. Powers has been willing to provide us with leadership in our extra cur- ricular affairs; she could be depended upon to support us in our activities not only in school but in the community as well. One of the first faculty advisors to American Field Service she sponsored the annual Christmas Bazaar which was so well received for so many years. A short time later Mrs. Power became advisor to the Senior class and the an- nual prom and banquet showed the Powers’ flair for throw- ing a party. Mrs. Powers was also very active in faculty affairs during her career; her colleagues recall thoughtfulness and an un- surpassed ability to put on a clam bake or get up a surprise party at a moments notice. Mrs. Powers’ feats of derring do, as performer in the talent show, in the faculty gold league, as a bowler and as mistress of ceremonies in the faculty room brings smiles to the faces of many of the vet- eran staff members. The teachers association, recognizing her leadership ability, elected Mrs. Powers secretary of their association; she has also served as negotiator on the salary committee. Doctor Clyde Eidens, Superintendent of Schools, recog- nizing Mrs. Powers’ intimate knowledge of the community has asked that each year she conduct the new teachers on a tour of Scotia-Glenville landmarks and resources. The PTA council has also honored her with a lifetime member- ship in recognition of her efforts on behalf of Scotia-Glen- ville students. As for the Class of 1975 we will remember her for the de- demanding, meticulous expectation in the design and construction of this yearbook. We will remember her for her leadership which during the past nine years has made the Acropolis the largest, most innovative high school an- nual in the entire Northeast. Fondly, we will remember the field trips to New York City, the lollipops for good work both in and out of school, the annual recitation of the Gettysburg address, and best of all her efforts to be so hard-hearted when we all know what a softy she really is. Mr. and Mrs. Powers, parents of five Scotia-Glenville graduates, are looking forward to a retirement which will find them living in their new home on Jekyll Island, Georgia and their cottage on Galway Lake during the sum- mer. Mrs. Powers will have more time to pursue her hob- bies, collecting antiques, digging for old bottles, playing a little golf and looking for an excuse to give someone a party. Frequently stubborn, occasionally irrascible, prone to exaggeration sometimes misunderstood, but always loved and respected by all, Agness Bell Powers will be long re- membered by the Class of 1975 and by hundreds and hun- dreds of Scotia-Glenville alumni. Mrs. Powers, Aggie'' we dedicate this yearbook to you with sincere affection we bid you farewell. May your retirement years be long and full of happiness. We will miss you. 7 Eventually, time rolls on; For even the brightest of sunsets A moon For even the darkest of nights A new day For the old and the tired Another breath of life For the young and the searching A lesson learned For even the saddest of days A ray of sunlight For every human being on earth A happier way to live And eventually time rolls on John Drovin 8 t ' SCOTIA-GLENVILLE BOARD OF EDUCATION SITTING LEFT TO RIGHT Mr. J. Acropolis 1910 Margaret Jennings: Pub room break. Brief history of the Scotia-Glenvill School System In 1770 a community school teas built on the east side of Sacandaga Road in a hamlet called Reeseuill. In April of 1820 the Fourth Ward officially separated from the City of Schenectady ana was named the Town of Glenville. Several hamlets throughout the town built individual schools for their pupils. Typical of these was the Mud School at the junction of Spring and Swaggertown Roads. District 92 school served the village from 1820- 1870 and, of record, provided the best education in the Union. With an addition of six rooms this build- ing accommodated the school population until 1905 when Scotia built its first high school. This school was used, until recently, for the seventh grade. Again, in 1924 it was necessary to build a new high school, and the present day seventh grade building on Sacan- daga Road is that school. In 1950 Scotia and Glenville centralized. Three new elementary schools were built in 1953 and the other two elementary schools were updated in 1954. The present high school was built in 1958 and an addition to it completed in 1962. The voters of the district approved a bond issue on April 19, 1972 for construc- tion of the new grades 8-9 building on properties adjacent to Sacandaga elementary school and the high school. Occupancy took place in September 1974. The present enrollment for the Scotia-Glenville Central school system is 4028. Agness B. Powers i. Dalton, B. Taber, A. Prehmus: Hi there! 144 Annukka Vakkuri. I do not know By what show chemistry you first became A vital fiber of my being. Go Beyond the rim of time or space, the same Inflections of your voice will sing their way Into the depths of my mind still. Your hair Will gleam as bright, the artless play Of word and glance, gesture and the fair Young fingers waving, have too deeply etched The pattern of your soul on mine Forget Me quickly as a laughing picture sketched On water, I shall never know regret Knowing no magic ever can set free That part of you that is a part of me.
