Buhrmaster Address by State Comptroller Arthur Levitt Testimonial and Reception for Kenneth E. Buhtmastet Scotia-Glenville High School 8:00 P.M., Saturday, October 9, 1971 The greatest weakness of our democracy is that we leave much of our society to the professionals-we resist involve- ment. Now I am not about to ask you to desert home or busi- ness for political action. I am not going to ask you to become involved in a variety of causes and community programs. Many of you are already involved too much. And this is just the point. We waste the impact of our efforts because we lack economy of direction. One well-infotmed, motivated Citizen can have more effect on society than a whole galaxy of committees. One man who will explore new paths, and dream of a new goal, can make more history than all of our annual reports put together. The fact is that many people, even educated people, have a negative effect on public life-pethaps without thinking. They condemn politics and politicians, and discourage their own sons and daughters from having any part of such a life. They show up at public hearings only When pocketbooks and property values are involved. They are unwilling to explore new solutions to old problems, because of some vague fear that their security may be involved. These are natural human reactions. But they are not the mark of the thinking citizen who would explore, or dream, or take risks to solve problems. And so the world needs the inquiring mind, and the discipline of persuasion toward a goaleboth marks of a truly educated man. But I think Ken Buhrmaster went beyond this when he stressed the need for man to express his beliefs, and for man to make neighbors of all his fellow men. There is a spiritual concept hete-a seeking for a meaning in life beyond our daily tasks. It may seem strange that a speaker with a background primarily in law and government should be saying these things to you this evening. But intellect, self-discipline and faith should be part of every walk of life. And I am emboldened to speak in such terms tonight because our guest of honor has combined these qualities in such great measure during his life of service and devotion. It is indeed evil to stand still and do nothing, for We waste the precious gift of mind, of spirit, of freedom. We be- come parasites on those who care enough to serve humanity; we are not builders, but despoilers. If we are really to do what the future requires, we must never stand still for long. And this great testimonial tonight would never have been held if one maneKen Buhrmastet-had ever stood still. ms is card of ducation Dr. Clyde 0. At first a full- time German teacher, she has also taught Social Studies and English. She is, however, best re- membered us a Biology teacher and since the in- ception of the Advanced Biology program at Scotia-Glenville High School the teacher. Un- der her direction the Biology Club planned the landscaping of the patio and carried out the an- nual spring Clean-upt Mrs. Shaw graduated from New York State College for Teachers at Albany and did her master's work at Cornell University. She and her husband, Tom, plan on travelling, and, of course, time out for good books and gar- dening. MRS. MARY O,BRIEN Mrs. O'Brien joined the Scotia- Glenville school system in 1959 as a member of the Junior High Mathematics Department moving to the high school in 1963. MAY SLIGO Miss Sligo has the distinction of having graduated from Scotia High School and has spent her entire teaching time of 39 NZ years in that same system. She retired on July 1, 1971 and since that time has done extensive travelling. Miss Sligo was formerly a member of the Junior High School English and Guidance Departments, moving to the high school as a guidance counselor in 1958. A graduate of New York State College for Teachers at Albany she received her Master's degree at Columbia University. Between travels, Miss Sligo is enjoying her new home on Glen Avenue. MRS.
