All good administrators do this, and Scotia-Glenville high school's do it in a special way. Mr. Letts and Mr. McGuire hold meetings, con- sult with the students and faculty, attend various classes in order to get a reading on pupil and faculty reactions, and in many other ways demonstrate a firm but gentle hand. TARTAN GRIDDERS FINISH TIED FOR THIRD The 1969 seotia Tartans finished with a record of 4-4 and a tie for .third place in the Suburban Council. Defense prevailed during the season as the Tartans allowed opposing teams only 13.6 points per game. In their first win of the year, Scotia heat Shaker 8-0. The win marked the first victory over Shaker since joining the Suburban Council. Shaker, which was known as an excel- lent passing team, could only complete 4 of 17 passes, and was intercepted 4 times by a tough Scotia secondary. Defense again was the key to a Tartan Victory as Scotia blanked Shenendehowa 14-0. Scotia controlled the hall most of the game primarily because the defense allowed only 21 total yards and recovered 4 fumbles. In their third win of the year, Scotia showed a fired up offense and an exceptional running game to stage a small upset over Colonie by a 13-6 score. The Tartans also inter- cepted 3 passes and recovered 2 fumbles to help secure the w1n. Scotia then beat Mohonasen in their final victory of the year. A defensive battle took place during most of the game until Scotia took and kept the lead midway through the con- test. The defense held Mohonasen deep in their own territo- ry to prevent any scoring threats. He was backed by Steve Henderson, Dave Hale, Brian Cel- ber, Jim Forbes, Dave Ringwall, Lou De- Flippo, and Don Larned. A season high- light for the team was a third place finish in the Grout Invitational Run, in which over thirty schools were entered. The team was composed mainly of underclass- men, so next year should be a good one-for Coach Miller. Coach Jim Miller - Awards Assembly VARSITY BASKETBALL The 69-70 basketball season was a very successful one for the Sco- tia Tartans. Under the reign of first-year coach Greg Olson, the Tar- tans drove their way up among the top teams in the Suburban Coun- cil. Senior Co-captains, Don Rafferty and Mick Pahl, led the Tartans with consistently strong offensive and defensive play. Rafferty and senior teammates Tony Marotta and Roy Kline supplied the rebound- ing power to go along with the steady ballhandling 0f Pahl, George Mahoney and Eric Stevens. The season was climaxed by Scotia,s return to the Sectionals, plac- ing Scotia back among the strong basketball teams in the area. His tenure as Super- intendent brought our district through the throes of centralization to its present place of prominence in the schools of the capital district. Mr. Martin was a superintendent whose ability to bring to the system, competent and understanding teachers and whose encouragement of new, pro- grams in the fields of music the humanities and science made the pupils aware of the advantages they were offered. His three children, Christine, Joan and Paul are graduates of Scotia-Glenville high school and he must be proud to have his grandchildren now a part of the elementary program. Mr, and Mrs. Martin, plan on travel and fishing, after a well deserved rest. Reflections on Our Past Miss Lillian Davis Business Education Head Miss Davis has spent all of her 38 teaching years in Scotia-Glenville high school. Many busi- ness students owe their interest and accomplish- ments to her flrm but gentle demands for perfec- tion. She has served as Business Education Dept. Head for the last two years. In addition to her teaching duties she ran The Tartan Shop and taught summer school in Schenectady. Her retirement February first was an eagerly looked forward beginningh of another full ca- reer. She hopes to travel, try her hand at selling real estate and continue the many Charitable ac- tivities she has been engaged in for many years both in her church and in the community. Mrs. Ruth Black English Teacher Mrs. Black retired at the end of the school year in 1969, after serving all of her 34 teaching years in the Scotia-Glenville system. A graduate of Scotia high school Mrs. Black Obtained her de- grees from Radcliffe. After teaching English in the old junior high she moved with the ninth grade to the new high school in 1959. She has helped many a floundering Freshman adjust to his new status and in addition served the Freshman class for many years as advisor. Her help for any and all occasions has endeared her to anyone who has come in contact with her. She is noted for her famous portrayals in the fac- ulty skits. She and her husband Tom have many plans for their future: travel, rest at their summer home, and an occasional stint in the store? cus on Their Understanding and Direction Mr. Leonard Proschel Mechanical Drawing Teacher Its hard to imagine our high school without Mr. Pro. In his capacity as Junior Class Advisor, Leonard Proschel has endeared himself to all Juniors as they worked with him on the various committees. His patience and understanding contributed to the solution of many of their prob- lems. Mr. Proschel joined the Scotia system in 1930 and has served continuously for 40 years except for naval duty during World War 11. Among his many extra-curricular activities: Advisor to the Junior Class, Basketball and Bowling Coach, Head of the Lomini Memorial Fund, former Head Teacher at Old Lincoln. He joins Mrs. Proschel who retired from teaching last year and they look forward to a busy retirement with bowling, golf, and church activities.
