SCITUATE HIGH SCHOOL CHIMES Scituate, Massachusetts Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Three Photo — Matt Robbins Scituate Town Library Scituate, Mass 1 CLASS HISTORY The tension mounted. We hardly felt warmed-up when we heard, Contestants in ' Run for Your Future ' Mile report to the starting line. Our High School years were about to begin. We were at the starting line. The official barked, Runners take your marks. Se-et (He raised the gun). GO (BANG)!! For those of us who found the auditorium, it was a smooth start. The race had begun with Mr. Ro bert Collins ' words whirling through our minds, As principal of Scituate High School, I would like to welcome you here. All of us hope that these four years will be the best years of your lives ... We long distance runners began falling into a stride. As our first Homecoming drew near the Freshman Hallway Com- mittee ran at a breath-taking speed to put the finishing touches on our Halloween hallway. Ken Branton ' s garage was the center of activity as our float, We ' ve Got the Spirit prepared for its debut. It received second prize . . . not bad for Freshmen ? It seemed like we had been running for such a long time. Why was there still such a long way to go? The Seniors generously supported our Freshman Hat Dance; thus setting the pace for the rest of the school to follow. Soon it was time for our first class outing which was to be held at Riverside Park. When we finally departed, Riverside was still standing. Our Class advisors, Mr. Robinson and Ms. Womersley also survived that part of the course. We began the second lap of the race as confident Sophomores. Our Hallway theme, Willy Wonker ' s Chocolate Fac- tory, took first prize, and our float, They ' ll Take A Lickin ' ' cause We ' ll Keep On Tickin! , took first prize. While our Hat Dance did not break any school attendance records, it did provide the participants with ample elbow room. Deciding that our class had a better chance at making money at an outdoor event, we became the first and only class to sponsor a Run for Fun. Although the weather threatened to make our course an unbridgeable mud puddle, our en- thusiasm helped us to hurdle all obstacles. Our Sophomore Boat Trip gave us the chance to replenish our spirits and to test the seaworthiness of our legs for the journey that would require two additional laps to be complete. The third lap, our Junior Year, introduced a new official, Dr. Eleanore Gowen, and two new coaches, Mr. Menard and Ms. Gambell; and tested our endurance with the PSAT ' S and the accompanying College Board Exams. Our Hallway theme, Born To Be Wild, and our float, We Got Them Under Our Thumbs were valiant efforts. After a successful Toga Dance, we precipitously rested on our laurels. Perhaps our strength had begun to wane, for we stumbled and averted a near fatal fall with our Class Act, The Junior Variety Show. We regained our class and composure with our Junior Prom-Senior Reception, Wonderful Tonight at Cristos II. This is the final lap, sometimes known as the gun lap. We are all sprinting breathlessly now under the diligent coaching of Mr. Speedy McCready and Mrs. Janet Gillies. So much depends on how this final lap is run. So much is in doubt. Some winners will not be announced for a long time. Perhaps they are running more than one race. The final steps may be taken to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance playing in the background. The ribbon is in sight. Who could have guessed that the long distance run would have been such a short sprint after all ? ; I RUN FOR FUN ROAD RACE Our Class of 83 was the first in the history of S.H.S. to originate and sponsor such an event as a road race. The four mile Run for Fun took place on Sunday, May 31 , 1981 , and was a novel fund-raising idea. Running classes were open for 120 men, women, children, and wheel chair competitors. The course traced the route from Central School, down First Parish Road to Front Street, up Beaver Dam to Branch Street, and back to Central School. The enthusiasm of the participants was shared by the class of 83, as the successful Run for Fun earned the class well over $300.00. Pre-entry quadruplets. The finish line is in the harbor?! We love your undies Mr. McCready. Hey you guys, the race already started. 6 Born to run.  10 Photo — Matt Robbins The Class of 1983 extends its warmest thanks to our advisors.
