Walter Driscoll of the Sci- tuate Police Department began a Police-Community Relations program here at Scituate High. The purpose of the program was to enable students to deal with a police officer in a classroom situation so that they might share opinions and problems. Any topic could be dis- cussed and all problems explored. Role playing was used to show how the students felt about the police in various situations, and as a result, the nightsticks carried by the police were removed from the foot patrol and confined to the cars. Sgt. Driscoll also works with the elementary and inter- mediate students where safety is the major topic. The students in these first classes were responsible for the showing of the movie, Mechanized Death, to the entire school population just before the April vacation. The results seemed to be positive in that there was not one major or minor accident involving a Scituate stu- dent through the graduation period. A field trip was taken to the Norfolk County Superior Court and the House of Correction at the invitation of Sheriff Clifford Marshall. The trip showed the students exactly what occurred in court, and, of course, the tour of the jail showed what happened to those who were sen- tenced in that court. Finally, the groundwork has been laid for far more intensive participation on the part of the students through Community Service involvement. 112 SENIOR AWARDS 113 SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS TO THE CLASS OF ' 78 THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES Mrs. Kathy Fortin Mr. Steve Certa PARENTS NOT PREPARED FOR GRADUATION Dear Anne: I ' ve been reading your column since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. This is my first letter and it is a plea for help. My son is graduating from high school this June, and Anne, you ' d never know he was a member of this family. For the past four years, he ' s been in and out (mostly out) participat- ing in all sorts of these extracurricular activities. I ' ll start off with freshman year. No sooner did I get him off to school at, yes, 7:00 in the morning, than he was home for lunch and soapies at 12:30. Before I knew it, he was out nights working in some girl ' s garage on a float, and there weren ' t even class advi- sors present. The effort was worth it; they won first place in the float contest. That is, if you can call a mass of crepe paper resembling a man with his pants down saying, We ' ll tan their hides, an effort. By June, he had class advi- sors to collect this so-called class dues he ' d expect his father to shell out every month. That was just the beginning. What I remember most about his Sophomore year was this Moonlight Cruise we allowed him to go on. I couldn ' t under- stand why he demanded to be dropped off at this recreation area, Teke Sher- man Park, beforehand. Come to think of it, he attended a roller skating party that year. I spent that entire night wor- rying that his paralyzation was perma- nent. This was the year 1 discovered mothers came in handy every so often, like at car washes and in the kitchen the night before a bake sale. No, I ' m not through yet. Junior year was a hectic one, and the gap between Junior and the family was widening. I was as excited as he was when he got his first real paycheck. But as his pay- checks got larger and larger, there seemed to be more ways to spend the hard-earned money. In the f all it was on spirit links, in the winter it was on dances and the Valentine corsages, (yes, they even sell them in school), and props for the Variety Show, then in the spring it was on the prom. The Variety Show, You Ain ' t Seen Nothin ' Yet, was entertaining, after all that time they spent rehearsing. It finally dawned on me that Junior was no longer a little boy when I saw him wearing a tuxedo for the first time. From what I gather, the prom, Knights in White Satin, at Blue Hills Country Club was nothing compared to the next day spent picnic- ing at College Pond, or was it Plymouth Beach? Anyway, the year ended on a sour note as he got the results back from his SATs. Anne, nothing compares to Senior year. I see Junior so little. Now it ' s his job compounded with dates with his girlfriend, parties all over town, (he won ' t have one in his own house), float meetings, and college visits. What little time he does spend at home is for the sole purpose of filling out college appli- cations. It took the worst blizzard of the century to keep him in the house for a day. He spends a lot of his money too, when he should be saving for col- lege. Now it ' s class dues, tee-shirts, Christmas presents, more SATs, Senior portraits, caps and gowns, a class ring, car insurance, college applications, and a Senior class dinner dance. Now it ' s graduation time. He complains about the tiresome rehearsals and his anxiety to get Outta ' here. Looks like everything is set for next year as far as Junior is concerned. I just wish I could say the same for me. The past four years have flown by. The problem is that I ' m realizing that Jun- ior is changing, growing up. Next year he won ' t even be living at home. Anne, is it natural for me, as a parent, to want him to stay a little bit longer, to stay the same? Is it natural for me to feel that as I let go of Junior, I ' m letting go of a part of myself??
