Text from Pages 1 - 206 of the 1972 volume:

1 Indeed, he who has a conviction strong enough to withstand the opposition of the crowd is the exception rather than the rule, an exception often admired centuries later, mostly laughed at by his contemporaries. (Erik Fromm) Only when we pause to wonder I one winter afternoon (at the magical hour when is becomes if) a bespangled clown standing on eighth street handed me a flower. Nobody, it ' s safe to say, observed him but myself; and why?because without any doubt he was whatever (first and last) most people fear most: a mystery for which i ' ve no word except alive — that is, completely alert and miraculously whole; with not merely a mind and a heart but unquestionably a soul — by no means funereally hilarious (or otherwise democratic) but essentially poetic or ethereally serious: a fine not a coarse clown (no mob, but a person) and while never saying a word who was anything but dumb; since the silence of him self sang like a bird. Most people have been heard screaming for international measures that render hell rational — i thank heaven somebody ' s crazy enough to give me a daisy e.e. cummings Eyer since we pd ered the High ScHfcl in 1963, Mr. Barnes, Mr. Galligan and Mr. Appleford, have been mordman cu llTOians to us. First grade saw Charlie R. always walking around with tape on his mouth and Jeff B. as the sensation of Wampatuck with his white shoes. And NOBODY could beat the Krobocks in marbles. Michelle C. broke her leg and was carried off the playground by the most handsome guy around. Colleen Mc. and Chip Mc. visited kindergarten for a day for slamming their desks. Trading parties at Central was THE thing. After every snowstorm we had a snow sculp- ture contest. Trees always seemed to get in Bob W. ' s way and we all cried when they cut down our clubhouse tree at Wampatuck. Jimmy B. led us into sin by skipping school in third grade. Patty S. got her first kiss from Ronnie J. Janice D. got her blouse caught in her jacket zipper and Mr. Chambers had to tear her blouse to get it undone. Leslie W. got sick all over Nancy F. Jeff B. and Mike T. were the Don Juans of the elementary school. We finally made it through . with Linda P., Janie A., and Anna D. having acci- dents all along the way. Sixth grade brought us into a new mature world. Nancy H. led a revolt of the girls in Miss McDevitt ' s class by not wearing socks. Mrs. Keenan gave us our gym suits and led us into the world of shower checks, feet checks, and hair checks . . while Carol S. led us in our first gym night. In seventh grade we all became one. Jimmy R. chased Kent N. down the halls yelling Smoke a Kent , and in turn everyone would chase Jimmy down the hall yelling Gopher . Seana B. hit it off well with Charlie Tuna. Patti S., Jackie D. and Anna D. mastered the art of stichery by sewing their fingers. Mary D. and Beth D. had to stay after for Mr. Bielski and smg I ' m a nut to the chair leg. Mrs. Smith gave us our first sex lecture . . and who could forget Mrs. Johnson ' s eye and finger exercises? Everyone paid SOc so they could wear pants on wear- what-you-want days. Mr. Bielski broke a ruler over Janie A ' s head . . and Sean G. got suspended for shooting a squirtgun at Mr. McPeak. The comedy team of Meg W., Terry M., Sheila D., Seana B., Brooke M., Nancy H., Mary S., Linda C. and many others entertained with their famed Shoo-Fly-Pie . And Mrs. Page made us eat EVERYTHING we made so Kathy O ' B. thought she ' d get the better of her by throwing her tomato soup out the window . . only to have it land on Miss Annis. Eighth grade brought on the BIG romances . . . Marybeth and Sean G., Kathy O ' B. and George J., Michelle C. and Dave E. And Barbara P. was the hit of the library for blowing kisses over to Chip Mc. The eighth grade formal brought an end to many romances the girls were suppose to sit down and wait for the boys to get their cake and punch . and Mrs. Smith ' s husband had made the cake ... no wonder it tasted so good. Linda C. walked into Mr. Bordne ' s room and he could TELL she was wearing culottes while Alan W. was eating a loaf of bread in Mr. Corbin ' s class. And the peak of Tommy M ' s grammar school 96 athletic career came when he ran up third base instead of first. Then came the big showdown for President — Peter B., Marybeth O ' H. and Patty C. — with Peter emerging the victor, our leader in the world of the unexplored. So amidst the jungle of long legs, broad shoulders, and new faces ... we found ourselves. Determined to have ourselves made known to the rest of SHS, we set to work on our freshman float — yet it was hardly worth the trouble — it brought us in last place and a bill for the broken window at the police station. And the girls will never forget Alice ' s warcry, Alright, ladies — you belong in the gym!!! Or the time a few members of Mr. Chiros ' s freshman biology class brought their frog legs to lunch and mixed them with everyone else ' s french fries. Susan C. had a pajama party for 25 girls — and Tommy M., Brad T., and Mike M. were caught there at 3:00 in the morning by Tommy ' s mother. And the freshmen girls shot for the stars — hockey, football, basketball . . . Marybeth O ' H. and Kent N. celebrated the end of the year by both holding pajama parties — very close together. Sophomore year saw Jim Star G. making his debut at SHS in Miss Doyle ' s class production of The Scarlet Letter , and Laura S. gave a magnificent per- formance of an old lady in another presentation. Our luck with floats didn ' t improve much — this time it started out as a kangaroo and ended up as a light- house . . . but the great times at Limonts made it worthwhile. Our sophomore car wash was a terrific success — we were more concerned with washing each other, so the cars left dirtier than they were before they came. Joey Mc. went so far as to chase some of the girls half a mile with a bucket of soapy water. Junior year brought the Variety Show — where everyone, willing or not, made their debut before countless Broadway scouts . . . while others were making their debut before Scituate ' s blue-uniformed scouts. And the class hams came out — Mary Ellen S., Kathy H., Donna K., John R., and John D., support- ed by a cast of thousands. Then, after some debate, our Prom plans were under- way. Led by Michelle W. and Donna Y. everyone contributed to making the night a memorable one ... to say nothing of the day after. Junior year went as fast as it came, and we were on our way to becoming BIG seniors . . . Stevie C. opened the year by getting a standing ovation in Caf. B for success- fully wearing his carrots all over him. And Senior Lounge . . who can forget the great times in there? . . . the Las Vegas type outlook it often took on — without the money, of course . . and the African mumbo music masterfully executed by Bob W., Bob F., Mike M., and their gang. And the senior girls entertaining themselves with musical chairs , redlight , and other childhood amuse- ments. And the final year of competition was on between Stu ' s Warsaw War- riors and Grif ' s Jersey Giants . . . who, after four years, would emerge the victors? And who will forget Marylee ' s seniors only party? And we eagerly await Peter Babin ' s return . . . Our thanks go to Miss Doyle and Mr. Dwyer for helping us through. 97 WELCOME, CLASS The freshmen class expectantly entered the hectic and im- posing world of Scituate High . Little today, big tomorrow, on their shoulders lies the future of SHS, and the World. E 105 i ■ I MAD DOG + FOOTBALL MEN 110 I ONLY WISH I HAD MORE TIME 1 1 115 ( ,0 iri S 0 U,e.R. 0O HAve TO V-t. A storm does not drop all its rain in one place, nor does a river have one tributary, or is there just one wave in the ocean, or does the sun always shine. Rather, a continued varia- tion and repetition of acts gives the harmony and balance to nature. This is what we should strive for: Love in all forms and all kinds be- comes the harmony of man. Drawn Unlutrstttj ku is io cetii ij ihut lool SEE THE MAN WITH STAGE FRIGHT It is essential that we work togher, and it is as if we were building a house. If some of us are building and others are tearing down, the house will obviously never be built. So we must indi- vidually be very clear that we really see and understand the necessity of bringing about the kind of education that will produce a new generation capable of dealing with the issues of life as a whole, and not as isolated parts unrelated to the whole.
