As in previous years, this is a man who has helped us with his instruction and guidance, and a person who has meant a great deal to all of us. It is with pride and af- fection that we dedicate the 1961 Chimes to Mr. Erroll K. Wilcox. Graduates, As members of the Class of 1961 you will have the distinction of being among the first to be graduated from the new Scituate High School. This is a memory to cherish throughout your life. It is the wish of the faculty and students that your graduation be a signal for many other note- worthy firsts in valuable lives abundant with health and happiness. I hope that in your time at Scituate High you have learned, in addition to formal academics, fundamental unchanging truths concerning respect for others, loyalty, service, and goodness which will help you live these valuable lives in a changing and perhaps chaotic world. Best wishes to you, seniors. 5 Clarence Atkinson AUDIO -VISUAL DIRECTOR Robert Barlow BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY Mary S. Newly elected officers for this year were Jack Mullen, president; Helen Attaya, vice-president; Jane Burroughs, secretary; and Richard Struzzerio, treasurer. The Council organized a very successful Blue and White Week and also constructed a pictorial hand- book for the new high school. It also sponsored a very enjoyable semi-formal dance when we entered the new school. Band The Scituate High School Band, although small, has enjoyed another successful year under the able direction of Mr. Robert Morrill. The Band added greatly to the spirit at all the football games last fall. This year members of the band represented Scituate High School in the South- eastern District Festival, All-New England, and the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. The entire band participated in the Southeastern Massachusetts Band Festi- val. Scituate was host this year to the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters ' Association, better known as SEMSBA, in which several of the Band members par- ticipated. The Band wishes to pay tribute to those members of the Class of 1960 who will pass from its midst to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance. 63 SCITUATE-YOUTH SPEAKS ITS MIND Uneasy Times Make Students (This is tJie seventh in a se- s of talks with high school _ iwknts about their opinions on patters of interest to them and ■veryone.) In our second year in the Southeastern Conference we went undefeated in league competition. The only loss was suffered to Northeastern, so we finished with a superb record of eight wins and one loss. Mike Ross and Tony Amato were elected co-captains at the beginning of the season. Mike Ross, Tony Amato, John Kane, and Ralph Struzzerio were chosen for the Quincy Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic team. Jack Connolly, one of our outstanding linemen, was picked for the Class C AU-Star Team, by the Boston Globe. Mike Ross, Ralph Struzzerio, and Mike Stewart were the leading scorers of this year ' s team. Scituate was able to boast one of the best defensive teams in the state. Only sixty- eight points were scored against Scituate ' s solid Wall. A great deal of credit is due to our fine coaches and to the boys them- selves. Cross-Country Mr. Webster defines cross-country as a sport which is run across fields and winding paths. Cross-country first originated at the time of the Greek Olympics, when a runner ran many miles with a torch in his hand to the stadium at Athens, where the main torch was mounted and left burning during all of the contests. This is a sport where the accomplishment and glory is based in the mind of the runner when he reaches the end of his journey. The runner lets nothing stand in the way of his reaching his goal. Carrying out this glorious tradition, our team has done a terrific job this year under the able coaching of Mr. Cook. The team ' s record was 4-2, and both losses, to Norwell and Holbrook, were only by one point. There were two really outstanding boys this year who went all the way to the state meets. Pat O ' Donnell won all of the dual meets, establishing new records at East Bridgewater, Holbrook, and the home course in Scitu- ate. Allen Silver won the Braintree Meet, (Pat came in second), the Principal ' s Meet, and the Class D State Championship. Pat Allen 71 ROW 1: L. Greek, M. Ford, K. Sweeney, L. Timpany, M. Sides, E. They experienced another splendid season with no losses and only three ties. After starting the season off slowly they gained composure and soon were in the trend for victory. They improved more during each practice and game, especially the offense. Congratulations to Mrs. Baure on another fine season. 72 This year the Sailors could boast one of the finest teams to represent our high school in years. Under the coaching of Larry Keenan we qualified for the Tech Tourney for the first time in five sea- sons, and there defeated Barnstable in a thrilling game before being downed by West Bridgewater. In addition we placed second in the South Shore League and were semi -finalists in the South Shore Tourney. The regular season was completed with a record of fourteen wins and four losses. Prospects for the future are bright. Though the team will actually feel the loss of Captain Chetty Stone and the other departing seniors, center Tommy Bauer, Ralph Struzzerio, Mike Stewart, and Tom Stone re- main as the backbone of next year ' s team. As captain and leading scorer, Charlie Allen won all of his matches except one, which was a draw, and compiled a total of forty -nine individual points, while allowing only six to be scored against him. He captured thirty -nine team points out of a possible fifty, with five pins, four decisions, and one draw. Jimmie Harper was first in his weight class and his record of seven wins and two losses proved his value to the team. David Galbreath ' s only loss of the year left him injured and unable to compete in the last three matches. But as the winner in the first six, Dave was reliable source of team points. One of the bright spots of the team is Danny Jenkins. With two years of varsity wrestling behind him and two years still to go, he could well become one of Scituate ' s foremost wrestlers. His record for this season was ten wins and three losses. The coach, Mr. Leo King, succeeded in skill- fully developing the natural talents of these boys and the others into a winning team. FRONT: B. Ice Hockey In this, its fourth year, our ice hockey team became recognized as a strong opponent. The most thrilling win, over fast -skating Catholic Memorial, proved that our team was not to be taken lightly. Under the coaching of Mr. Finnegan and the leadership of Captain Walter Stone and Assistant -Captain Jon Gunn, the hockey players displayed themselves as a very spirited and aggressive team. The goal tending of junior Dick Clifford was outstanding. Two players were chosen for the all-star team: center Walter Stone and defenseman Jon Gunn. Suffering one loss to Hingham they were still able to win the Stonehill Championship. In a return match at Hingham they succeeded in defeating them, and therefore Scituate won the South Shore Championship. Thomas Baur was a runner up in the State Championship. A good proportion of the team will be returning this year, so track this coming season should be really good. Returning this year will be, of course, Pat O ' Donnell, who is also a prominent cross-country runner. Probably he will run in the distance events such as the 440, 880, and mile. Among the dash runners are Pete Scott, who did very well last year in the 100, 220, and relay, and Joe Williams who runs almost anything. Joe was very impressive in his running last year, so he is expected to do extremely well this coming season. Tim Riordan also, is a good runner and is expected to be very successful this year. Other prospects are George Story and Gorden Butch Logan. The youngest of last year ' s team was Derryl Riggins, who did very well in the 100 and the 220. He was also one of the four on the relay team which was a very good one. Mr. Smith did very well in beginning track in Scituate as a major sport. This year Mr. Smith was un- able to coach the Cross Country Team because of another coaching position so this year ' s Track coach is unknown. 88 c Co .ecei: ' a « e.,. X ;itW J e . ' ' -Uit 5,.
