JiClTUATE HIGH SCHOOL This is to certify that hac j-iveii fpithf r new ice to the SCITUATIOH for the year I95C • 1959- 959 Once more the ringingofthe chimes in Lawson ' s Tower marks the graduation of a class from Scituate High School, the Class of 1959. With this announce- ment of each year ' s graduation comes our yearbook, The Chimes, our pictorial story of the year we have spent at Scituate High School. The officers for 1958-1959 were Jean Gunn, president; Eric Turner, vice president; Sandra Bongarzone , secretary; Jan Smith, treasurer; and Mrs. Coleman, advisor. In February a formal induction of new senior members took place in the library with Susan Doherty, Johanna Barrie, Jan Smith, and Judy Kestila delivering speeches on scholar- ship, leadership, service, and character. Mrs. Sides was the chief speaker. In May there was an informal induction of juniors and additional seniors who had met the scholastic requirements of the organizations. mm REGULAR LIBRARIANS: Joanne Barron, Penny Corcoran, Pauline Costa, Judy De Mello, Wendy Lou Dennis, Kathy Hassan, Joan Holleman, Ann Hoyt, Susan Kenney, Karen Koerber, Judy Macintosh, Pat Pina, Sally Rolfe, Judy Story, Carol Tinson, Sharon Westcott. TEMPORARY LIBRARIANS: Helen Attaya, Eleanor Buckley, Sally Buckley, Pat Flanagan, Jackie Franks, Barbara Jillson, Marion Murphy, Eileen Tilden, Donna Waddell. The Library Club was organized in September under the direction of Miss Gile with Wendy Lou Dennis as president; Joan Holleman, vice president; Penny Corcoran, secretary; and Sally Rolfe, treasurer. Meetings were held after school on the first Wednesday of each month to plan ways of making money for new books and library pins. For this purpose, food sales were held in the cafeteria after school to accommodate students and teachers who had to remain late. At Christmas, the club decorated a small tree and con- tributed presents for a needy family. Scrapbooks for children were also sent to the South Shore Hospital. The Library Club was invited to the Hingham High School for a Christmas party and to the Quincy High School for a Valentine ' s party. 52 K. Callahan, Mrs. Hamilton, M. Murphy, L. Schair, S. The officers for 1958-1959 were Sally Buckley , president; Leslie Schair, vice president; Eleanor Buckley, secretary; and Marion Murphy, treasurer. One of our first projects was a luncheon to welcome new teachers to Scituate High School. Later, six girls from Leslie College joined us in a luncheon and presented a stimulating panel discussion on practice teaching. In the spring, the club visited Leslie College in return. At one meeting, Mr. Joseph DriscoU, principal of Wam- patuck School, spoke to our members. We visited this school several times during the year. A record hop was held in March to raise money for a twenty -five dollar scholarship to be given to a boy or girl planning to be a teacher. 53 J. Smith, R. Murray, F. Dauphinee, B. Sunnerburg, P. This year, the Key Club undertook the ambitious project of producing the play, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial to pur- chase senior jackets. This was the first time an all -male cast has performed at Scituate High School. The Key Club plans its activities and services with the goal of helping to make Scituate High a better school. It co-operates with Mr. Stewart and the student body to foster good school spirit. They played for several football games, including the Thanksgiving Day game, and presented a concert in February and another in the spring. For members of both the band and the orchestra there arc many opportunities to participate in musical groups from all over Massachu- setts and New England. Students from Scituate have competed at the South Eastern Massachusetts School Band Masters ' Association, the New England Music Festival, the New England Solo and Ensemble Festival, and S. E. Mass. Auditions Festival. The band would like to pay tribute to not only the valuable players that will be lost when the strains of Pomp and Circumstance are heard drifting out from the gym, but also to those Junior High School players who will take their places next year. 59 M. Though the record of the 1958 football season was not impressive, the team ' s spirit was high throughout. Mr. Soc- corso, our new coach, was ably assisted by Coach Keenan in introducing to the Sailors the single wing offense, a new for- mation. The boys worked hard to perfect it, and their efforts were rewarded, as they concluded their season with three straight victories. At the end of the season, Tom Prouty was chosen by the Quincy Ledger to be a member of the South Shore All- Scholastic Team. Eric Turner, outside tackle, and Fred Dauphinee, wing- back, were elected co -captains of the 1958 football team. They worked with the coaches throughout the season, prepar- ing the team for their Saturday encounters. I S. Bongarzone, M. Sides, P. Curran, R. Burrows, E. Buckley, G. Donoghue, L. Stewart, S. The field hockey team of 1958 had a very successful season under the direction of Mrs. Bauer. They were co- champs with Marshfield and Duxbury, losing only one game. Linda Stewart and Susan Doherty were co-captains. Martha Hopkins and Sally Buckley were top scorers with fourteen points each; Susan Doherty was second with nine; and Linda Stewart was third with seven. The Marshfield game was the most exciting of the sea- son as this was the first time Scituate had beaten Marshfield for several years. Waine MacAUister scored the only goal from forty feet out. The J.V. lost the Marshfield game but won all the rest. The J.V. ' s top scorer was Lois Greek with seven points. 66 p p c, r J. Kane, C. Stone, J. Squizzero, T. Stone, T. Bauer, T. Stevens, E. McLaughlin, T. Riordan, S. Taylor, J. Mac- Donald, M. Ross, E. Barry, D. Schair. Although the Sailors did not have an impressive season this year according to wins and losses, spirit was high, and excellent skill was exhibited many times throughout the season. The team won only the games with Duxbury, Avon, and the Alumni, but most of the other games were lost by just a few points. Coach Lawrence Keenan and Captain William Stetson believe that next year looks very bright for the Sailors, as this year ' s team in- cluded many underclassmen who will return next season, fortified by their previous experience. Congratulations to the Sailors for their consistent effort and good sportsmanship! 68 Off I A. Soucy, J. Webster, C. Ladd, K. Reynolds, N. Hailer, B. Richardson, P. Ward, P. Grey, R. Cohen, G. Al- though the team didn ' t win the championship, they should be proud of their fine record. They socred a total of 655 points to their opponents ' 386, an average of 50 points to the opponents ' 30 in each game. Linda Stewart let the team in the scoring with 213 points. Sally Buckley and Susan Doherty were not far behind this excellent showing with 144 and 108 points each. The forwards did a magnificent job. The guards, Karen Mullen, Johanna Barrie and Geri Donaghue, de- serve a great deal of recognition. Credit for a successful season is given to the junior varsity also. They had many good players and next year will contribute materially to the varsity team. The last whistle has been blown and the last bas- ket made for the graduating seniors; but it is certain that no one will ever forget the wonderful coach, Mrs. Bauer, whose patience, confidence and sincere spirit helped them to win. In their second year, the Scltuate High School ice hockey team became recognized as a formidable opponent. Their stinging defeat of the first place King Philip team this season showed a team not to be taken lightly. Under Coach Finnegan the hockey team displayed themselves as a very spirited and ag- gressive group. Led by captain Bruce Sunnerburg and all-star center Don Grip, the team played a fine season with an unprecedented number of fourteen hockey games. The goal tending by Senior Billy McKeever was outstanding. He was second goalie in the league, percentage-wise, for the number of saves he made out of the shots at him. During the sea- son the underclassmen established themselves as a strong team for the future. If they continue to im- prove, the prospects look bright for Scituaie. RECORD Arch. Piloted by their new coach, Mr. Kidd, and their captain, Eric Turner, the team maintained a fine spirit through- out the season. As the 1958-1959 team included only two seniors, Eric Turner and David Durant, next year ' s squad should be one with experience under its belt. Captain Turner, who represented Scituate High School in the New England Interscholastics last year, went undefeated this year, thereby again establish- ing himself as an outstanding wrestler. Wrestling is becoming an increasingly popular sport at Scituate as was indicated by the many spectators who at- tended the home matches this year. Matches were held during the season with Milton Academy, M.l.T.
