1958 As the chimes in Lawson ' s Tower herald another graduation, we, the Class of 1958, present our year- book with the hope that it will help to preserve the memories of our days at Scituate High School. Here we have learned to live in a truly American way. We shall always remember the friends we ' ve made, the classes we ' ve attended, the teachers we ' ve known, and the wonderful times we ' ve experienced together. Sputnik ' s beeps may be heard and pass away; but may the ringing of the chimes continue, as our class and succeeding classes take their places in the world. The officers of the 1957-1958 Council were Ronald Ren- currel, president; Paul Scott, vice president; Susan Doherty, secretary; and Nancy Oliver, treasurer. Throughout the year problems involving the conduct of the students in school and at school af- fairs were brought before the Council for discussion and action, if needed. As in the past, one of the biggest projects was earning money for the purchase of jackets and awards for the seniors. Four delegates attended the fall convention of the Southeastern Body of Student Councils at Hol- brook High School. Delegates also attended the spring convention at Hull High School. 34 FIRST ROW: R. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY After being a member of the Pro Merlto Honor Society since 1949, Scituate High School has now become affiliated with the National Honor Society, which is recognized throughout the country. Mrs. Coleman will continue as the adviser. Officers for this year were George Rodgers, president; Richard Ladd, vice president; Charlotte White, secretary; and Emilie Bubin, treasurer. For election to the society, the qualifying mark for seniors is 88 and for juniors is 92. Fourteen sen- iors who met the requirements for scholarship and citizenship were approved for membership by the faculty council and were inducted at the beginning of the year. In March there was a second election when both juniors and seniors who had qualified were admitted to membership. 35 FIRST ROW: F. Dauphinee, G. Rodgers, J. Mclnnis, P.Johnson, Mr. Harvey. The Key Club is essentially a service organi- cation designed to benefit the school and com- munity. Its members are drawn from the three upper classes. Key Club International, to which we belong, is a junior affiliate of Kiwanis Inter- national; and its member clubs cooperate closely with their respective Kiwanis chapters. The aims of Key Club International are to develop friend- ship, to encourage leadership, and especially to build better schools and stronger communities. Of this year ' s Key Club projects there were two major ones; participation in the DiManno Fam- ily Fund drive, and assisting the Student Associa- tion to purchase the senior jackets. This help was made possible through several successful Key Club record hops. Key Club officers for the year were George Rodgers, president; James Mclnnis, vice president; Paul Johnson, treasurer; and Fred Dauphinee, sec- retary. The club ' s new advisor was Mr. Harvey, who has been very active in Key Club work at other schools where he has previously taught. 36 FIRST ROW: M. Foster, N. Ashley, R. Smith, D. Waddell, N. The Library Staff organized early in September with the following officers: Nancy Damon, presi- dent; Rosalie Warshaw, vice president; Joan Walsh, secretary; and Rita Smith, treasurer. These offi- cers with the aid of a representative from each class made arrangements for meetings and planned various activities. On the board were Patricia Ford, senior; Donna Waddell, junior; Judith Mac- intosh, sophomore; Nancy Cole, freshman; and Theresa Wilder, grade eight. Miss Eleanor Gile is the adviser of the group. One of the big events each year is a Christ- mas party for librarians of neighboring schools. At this year ' s party Miss Vinal, head of the Soc- ial Studies Department, gave a very interesting illustrated lecture on her trip to France last sum- mer. The Library Staff occasionally sponsors a lec- ture, gives bookreviews, or listens to good music. It is hoped that the new Hi-Fi, recently added to the library equipment, will be a means of further developing music appreciation. With a fine nucleus from last year, they rolled up a record of 6 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie, in a schedule considerably more rigorous than previously played. The team encountered such giants as Swansea, Somerset, Wayland, Oliver Ames (North Easton), Burlington, and Weston. The most out- standing achievement of the season was the tie with Wayland, which ended the longest winning streak in the state. After the game, the Boston Herald crowned the two teams the giants of little school- boy football. At a post season meeting Paul Roy was elected captain of the 1957 team. Later he and Paul John- son were chosen for the Quincy Patriot -Ledger All-Scholastic Dream Team. This year the offense produced 28 goals, while the defense held for only 1 goal. The leading scor- ers of the Varsity Team were Jean Curran and Gail Wilder, each with six goals apiece. In two of the other meets the second team, running in place of the first, was a winner. At the Braintree Interscholastic Meet, the Scituate first team runners came in second in Class A, while the second team was first in Class B. At the South Shore Principals ' Association Meet the Scituate harr- iers successfully defended their championship by winning the meet. Unfortunately, because of the flu epidemic, the Cross Country team were unable to defend their state Class D title in Boston. CLASS C CHAMPIONS BASEBALL- 1957 Schedule and Record The dreams of any coach were fulfilled last spring when the Sciiuate High baseball team defeated Way- land in a thrilling 2-1 game to become the South- eas tern Massachusetts Class C champions. They had a record of 13 wins and 2 losses. The two losses came at the hands of Marshfield, which defeated Scituate in the season ' s opener. However the loss was avenged by the rematch, which resulted in a tie in the league between Scituate and Marshfield. In the league play- off Scituate lost, but they later eliminated Marshfield from the state championship. Sacred Heart of New- ton, Bridgewater, and Wayland all suffered the same fate at the hands of a mighty Scituate team, and so ended an eventful season. SOUTH SHORE CHAMPIONS THE RECORD One of Scituate High School ' s most consistent team winners has been the girls ' tennis team. For the past several years they have had fine records, and last year was no exception. During the 1957 season they won 9 matches and lost only 1, that with Winchester. Entered in the South Shore Tournament, the team came out champions of the South Shore. On the basis of play in the New England Tournament during the summer of 1956, Linda Stewart ranked number 3 in the 15 -year -old class; Sandra Knowles, number 18, and Susan Doherty, number 20. Congratulations for a good job well done go to Mrs. Bauer, the coach, and to the team. WRESTLING Wrestling moved into its fourth year at Scituate High School with approximately twenty boys participating. Everyone worked hard as conditioning was stressed this year. Many attended a four -week body building class which was started for interested seventh graders. Conditioning is very important in this sport as wrestling uses almost all the muscles in the body. It also develops balance, good coordination, and reflex action. Although six lettermen graduated last year, the spirit and morale of this year ' s team was the best since wrestling started. The record of this year ' s meets was as follows: Scituate 24 Roxbury Latin Scituate 21 Noble and Greenough Scituate 46 Brown and Nichols Scituate 54 Wellesley 45 61 28 22 Meets were also scheduled with the Rivers School and Needham High. 56 - FIRST ROW: F. Mullen, J. Gunn. THIRD ROW: Manager Don Allan, B. Barron, L. Ayala, W. McKeever, L. Haartz, E. Page, S. Freda, Coach Paul Finnegan. In its first year at Scituate High, ice hockey became a very popular sport. Under Coach Finnegan the Scituate team was determined to play good hockey and had a very successful season. In their first game the skating Sailors defeated King Philip Reg- ional High School 3 to 1. Toward the end of the season the team had compiled an impressive record of three wins and three losses. Coach Finnegan feels that the group will develop into a good skating sextet. 1st Line - L. W. Skipper Fryling, C. Paul Johnson, R. W. Don Grip, L. D. Jon Story, R. D. Billy Kay. 2nd Line - L. W.
