SCITUAK lOWN I IBHAHY 3 1 644 00303 59 0 As the Class of 1957 approaches graduation, we look back on the past four years. Not only have we gained knowledge from textbooks, but we have also had the wonderful experience of do- ing things together --joining clubs, acting in plays, winning games, and attending parties and dances. As we join the alumni of Scituate High School, we wish to take our store of memories with us. Accordingly we present our 1957 yearbook, THE CHIMES, as a pictorial record of oiu ' teachers, friends, and good times. May THE CHIMES continue to ring out the spirit of Scituate High School for future classes. Published by the students of SCITUATE HIGH SCHOOL, Scituate, Massachusetts Photography by WARREN KAY VANTINE Studio Boston Raymond G. Biggar In September, 1953, Mr. Raymond G. Biggar joined the faculty of Scituate High School as a teacher of English and ancient history. During the next three years he directed an All-School production and two Senior Class plays. He also headed the SCITUATION staff and worked with the Cross Country team. As sophomores, the class of 1957 elected Mr. Biggar class adviser. Under his leadership we suc- cessfully carried out our various activities and sponsored our Junior Prom. When he resigned in 1956, our class lost a well -liked teacher, helpful adviser, and wonderful friend. To show oiu appreciation, THE 1957 CHIMES is dedicated to Mr. Biggar, now an insturctor at Bridgewater Teachers College. First of all, we chose our leaders, Jim and Beth to guide. David Buckley held our money; Carol wrote ' long-side. Pro Merito, our honor society. Was run by Dave, Beth, and Jed, Fifteen together, struggling onward, Marks -wise, Beverly led. Student Council had its place. Future Teachers, and camera crew, Key Club, Chimes staff, Scituation, Library, and service awards, too. Singing had an important place, Twelve seniors will agree; All of our Glee Club girls Did carol merrily. Three boys rumbling on bass With tones solemn or gay Also made lots of music. With Connie there to play. Now we have to change our mood, for thundering down the field Comes a group of sports enthusers; to others they won ' t yield. Back in the autumn, a thousand pounds Galloped in formations on school grounds. Lineman Charlie cleared the way; Then the rest could join the fray, Larry, Jimmy, Broke and Frank, Tall or stubby, chubby or lank; On they fought to the rhythm of the band Tootling bravely in a foreign land. Standing, shivering, they laboreth, Dave and Connie, Beverly and Beth. Whack! went the hockey stick on ground; That was one place where Joyce was found. Millie, Carol, and Carolyn, too, Helped make up a hardy crew. Jed was ahead, -he always will be Leading at track and cross country. Paul ' s close behind, so were Dave, Dick, and Rick; Bob and Spike were also quick. Basket shooters, led by Larry, Dave, Frank, and Bob, the ball did carry. In girls ' basketball, were captains Linda and Carol, Beverly, Millie, and two in managers ' apparel. Next we see the wrestlers, tangled on their mat. Two Daves, Ricky, Spike, and Ted, -all were out for that. Baseball and Softball were two more favorite games; Always to excel was one of our aims. Five of our boys, four of our girls. The banner of sportsmanship around them furls. All were helped by cheerleaders, ready on the spot, Judy, Carol, Pat, and Joan, -Barney as an after-thought. Many folks have helped us. Miss Vinal first of all. Mr. Merrill joined her To keep us from a fall. Mr. Biggar then took over- He did his job well. Mr. Gibbons, now we ' re seniors, Helps our fiery thoughts to quell. The Class of ' 57 now leaves its sheltered past With eyes upon the future; the final die is cast. 15 17 Senior Class Play Cheaper by the Dozen Adapted from the book by Frank B. This year the S.H.S. team posted an im- pressive record of 6 wins, 2 losses, with the toughest schedule yet, -6 Class C and 2 Class D schools. The team itself was one of the strongest ever fielded by S.H.S. Scituate beat tlie Randolph team, ending their first winning streak; downed Whit- man for the first time, 26-21; and ended with a decisive victory, 33-7, over Silver Lake in their first gridiron tilt. Scituate High graced the Quincy Ledger All-Scholastic Team with three players, -two brothers, Jim and Tom Prouty, and Paul Johnson respectively, Tom Prouty was the youngest to make the team in fifteen years. An added distinc- tion was given to Jim Prouty when he was elected captain of the 1956 football team. This year Mrs. Bauer can well be proud of the field hockey team, with five wins out of six games played. The climax of the season was a Field Day held at Con- cord High, where they have five playing fields. From 9 a .m . until noon thirty teams were kept busy playing shortened games. -Scituate ' s opponents were Cam- bridge Academy, which bowed to us 1-0, and Friends School of New Bedford, which we downed 5-0. The underclassmen are looking forward to a repeat trip to Con- cord next fall. The top scorers of the season were Joyce Perry with thirteen goals, Susan Doherty with nine, and Linda Stewart with eight. At graduation the team will lose four varsity players: Joyce Perry, Carol Stone, Millie Fletcher, and Carolyn Tilden. The scores of the games played were as follows: Scituate 3 Norwell 0 Scituate 3 Cohasset 0 Scituate 13 Holbrook 0 Scituate 4 Duxbury 1 Scituate 1 Marshfield 2 Scituate 3 Hanover 0 Field Hockey Cross Country Champions Cross Country for 1956 started and ended with a bang, for the sailors literally ran through the season with only one defeat, that being at the New Englam Interscholastics held at Colby College, where they placed second for the whole of New England. The sailors jumped out of their class in the state meet and captured the state Class A crown, Jed Fitz- Gerald winning the individual title. A mong the meets won by the sailors were the South Shore Interscholastics Meet at Braintree, and the South Shore Principals ' Meet at Holbrook. For the past three years the SHS Girls ' Basketball Team has been a co-champion of the South Shore League, sharing the honor with Marsh- field. This year the girls had a 12-1 record, losing only to Marshfield. The two most exciting contests w ere the game with Thayer, which we won by four points, and the first game with Marshfield, which we lost by three points. The team ' s leading scorer was Bonnie Leone, fol- lowed by Linda Stewart and Susan Doherty. These for- wards did a magnificent job. The guards, Carol Stone, Linda Calderwood, and Rosemary Lynch, also did a wonderful job, holding the opponents to an average of 30 points a game. Most of the credit, however, goes to Mrs. Bauer, who pulled the team through the rough spots of the season and whose confidence and spirit helped them win. FIRST ROW: D. Buckley, F. DeVincentis, L. Boys ' Basketball In the exciting 1957 basketball season, Scituate wound up in a tie with Norwell for second place. Sci- tuate lost only to Norwell, Hanover, and Marshfield, making the league record 7-3. The team made the semi-finals of the South Shore Tournament, only to be defeated by East Bridgewater. In the Tech Tournament they beat Harwich, but lost the ticket to the Garden by bowing out to the impres- sive Wayland team. 7 BASKETBALL 1956-57 THE RECORD Scituate 69 Cohasset Scituate 77 Norwell Scituate 60 Hanover Scituate 62 Marshfield Scituate 74 Duxbury Scituate 88 Cohasset Scituate 62 Hanover Scituate 60 Norwell Scituate 78 Duxbury Scituate 51 Marshfield Scituate 78 Bridgewater Scituate 52 East Bridgewater Scituate 56 Hanover Scituate 76 Harwich Scituate 49 Wayland 34 69 71 50 49 33 58 61 38 71 59 55 66 62 71 FIRST ROW: R. Wrestling is really catching the interest of the students of Scituate High School as it moves into the third year. Thirty boys came out for the sport this fall, more than have ever participated before. Wrestling is an individual sport; that is, every man competes with an opponent who is in the same weight class. To be a winner, one must have ejqjerience, knowledge of holds, and strength. At our first meet, which was held at M.LT. on December 15, we won, 20-7. We lost to the strong Roxbury Latin team, 30-6; to Noble and Greenough, 24-18; and to Needham, 28-6. However, we came home to win against Wellesley, 33-9, and against Brown and Nichols, 25-16.
