SCITUATF TOWN LIBRARY As the chimes in Lawson ' s Tower ring out another graduation, we, the class of 1956, remember the wonder- ful years spend in their shadow at vScituate High School. The teachers we ' ve had, the friends we ' ve made, the games we ' ve won, and the good times we ' ve enjoyed together will continue to ring in our memories. Soon the members of our class will leave Scituate High School to take their places in the world. To preserve our memories for future years, we present our yearbook, the 1956 CHIMES. As the chimes con- tinue to ring the passing of the clas- ses, may the alumni of Scituate High School spread its spirit throughout the world. Published by the Students of Scituate High School Scituate, Massachusetts Photography by Loring Studios Boston We Remember GEORGE A. J. FROBERGER ANNE L. CUNNEEN In July, 1955, Mr. George A. J. Froberger retired, because of his health, after eight years of service in the Scituate School Department. He was principal of the Junior -Senior High School from 1947 to 1954, and assistant superintendent of schools from 1954 to 1955. Mr. Froberger is remembered and respected for his sincere interest in young people and for the high ideals which he tried to inculcate in the students of Scituate High School Anne L. Cunnen, beloved teacher of English in the Scituate schools since 1919, passed away in July, 1955. Miss Cunneen was loved by former students as a sympathetic teacher and friend. One of her great contributions to the town was her work with Americanization classes. In 1954, the Kiwanis Club awarded her the ' Woman of the Year plaque for her outstanding service as one of Scituate ' s great teachers. 2 The Chimes EDITORIAL STAFF BUSINESS STAFF Editor-in-Chief.. . .Beryl Sylvester Business Manager . .Mary Sue Curran Assistant Editors. . . .Anne Gardner Co-Manager Joan Barry Beverly Burt Assistant Business Managers Art Editor Addison Pratt Marilyn Budjinski Girls ' Sports Phyllis Gleason Linda Calderwood Boys ' Sports Leonard Stone Edward Dunham Brenda Merritt Dramatics Penelope Richards Typists Alumni Charlotte White Alice Atkins Susan Aiken Class Editors Constance Gomes Joan Turner Judith Garlinger Joyna Roderick Deborah Tilden Ann Misner Marjorie Sprague Dorothy Marsh Pauline Cecil Faculty Advisor Miss Hawkes Faculty Advisor Miss Dudley Ruth D. We agree that being seniors was simply the greatest; Here ' s a review of the year up to the latest. This year Big Bob was elected top man With Larry always ready to lend a hand. Mary Sue got the note-book, and Debbie the bank; For leading the class, we ' d like to say thanks. To our advisers, Mrs. Bauer and Mr. Benson, too, Much of our success is owed to you. You helped with our dances, our prom, and our play; We thank you for guiding us on our way. In football our boys were really on the ball, Though Larry ' s broken arm didn ' t help at all. Jimmy was captain of the high school team, And Dean was destined for the All-Star Team. But football wasn ' t the only reason For everyone ' s enjoying the ' 55 season. The field hockey team captured second place. And the track team was first in many a race. The cheerleaders had a right to complain. For during the season it did nothing but rain. Ellie led this rain-soaked crew, Starring Joan and Debbie and Phyllis, too. Our class made history in their Good Government selection; Mary Sue was the first girl to win the election. Anne was elected Good Citizen of the D. A. R., And Charlie, with the Bausch-Lomb Award, did star. For president, the Key Club chose Duke Rencurrel; With him presiding, all went well. Roger was president of Student Council this year With Vice President Dean always near. Oh! another thing important to mention-- As Godfrey, Roger drew a lot of attention. We used the Coronation as a spring dance theme. And on March the second crowned a king and a queen. Debbie had the lead in the senior class play. With Ellie and Joan prompt ing along the way. Joan and Leonard, Jim, Carrie, and Sue Displayed their talents, --to name just a few. Pro Merlto claimed those who reached scholastic fame. As officers, Charlie, Addison, and Mary Sue were named. The girls were co-champs in basketball. But sharing the honors didn ' t matter at all. There were lots of clubs, some old, some new. Future Teachers ' and Nurses ' Club are only two. Included here are glee club and band; The music they made was really grand. As graduation ends these happy days. And all of us go our separate ways, We ' ll all, each one, keep the memory clear Of Scituate High, our Alma Mater dear. 14 Senior Class Play The 1956 Senior Class play was entitled Maudie and the Opposite Sex, The production was directed by Mr. Raymond Biggar, James Breen and Car olyn Gras sie played Mr. and Mrs, Mason, Deb- orah Brigham, Susan Andrews, and Joan Barry took the parts of Maudie, Sylvia, and Lynn, Davy was played by Roger Kirwood, with Leonard Stone as Mr. Endicott. The second field hockey team, consisting of many members of our class, was undefeated except for one tie with Marshfield. Many Freshmen are excellent stu- dents, in addition to being interested in sports and other school activities. The record of three wins and three losses does not show the efforts of the team. Scituate lost to Bridge- water ona badbreak, 14-7. However, the last two games ended on a happy- note, with Scituate victorious over Hanover and Holbrook. At the end of the season the team voted Jimmy Breen captain for 1955. Dean Shea and James Prouty were chosen to represent Scituate on the QUINCY PATRIOT-LEDGER ' S All- Star Team. Prouty received further recognition by being voted a co-cap- tain of this Dream Team. Scituate ' s 1955 field hockey team was highly successful. Of the five games played, there was only one loss, which was to Marshfield. The scores for the games played were 4-1, Norwell; 2-2, Hanover; 3-1, Cohasset; 9-0, Duxbury; and 1-2, Marshfield. The total number of goals for Scituate was 19; for our op- ponents, 5. Mary Sue Curran was high scorer with 10 goals. Linda Stewart and Joyce Perry tied for second place with 3 goals each. Scituate ' s game with Marshfield was a fine show of sportsmanship and the will to win, although the final score was in Marshfield ' s favor. This being only the second year that Scituate High has had a wrestling team , the mat-men are still young and inex- perienced. However, the team gained several new recruits this year, some of whom look very promising. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Bordne, Scituate should have a top -notch wres - tling team in a few years. Meets were scheduled this season with Roxbury Latin, Noble and Green- ough, Brown and Nichols, Wellesley, Needham, and Belmont Hill. Also for the first time Scituate High sent con- tenders to the New England Meet, which was held at Needham. 42 FIRST ROW: P. Ford, E. Rice, C. Brown, S. Dauphinee, J. Curran, M. Curran, V. Dorr.
