it happened. Housewives through the ages have ob- served the growth of molds on food which was begin- ning to spoil. This growth of molds occurs in scientific laboratories also and has often been ob- served by scientists who were conducting tests with cultures of disease causing germs. Recent stories regarding the growth of molds has brought out the fact that many scientific workers in the past have discarded their experiments and started over agin because the experiment apparently had Leen spoiled by the growth of a mold. There are many kinds of mold plants just the same as there are many kinds of vegetable plants in the garden. The most troublesome of the mold plants which interfered with the scien- tific experiments was one by the name of penicillin. According to the story, whenever this particular mold got into the germ test ng materials the ex- periment usually had to be started over agln because this mold interfered so much with the germs being studied. Scientific workers lived out their time and others came on the scene for many, many years, all going through the monotonous experience of often having to discard their work and start over again be- cause this particular mold got into their work. In such a laboratory in a recent year a scien- tific worker again faced the experience of having to discard the work and start over again. As he was a- bout tc discard his work e thought struck him and set him to dreaming. The arresting ouestion was why should that mold cause so much trouble? Might it be possible that such great nusiance value could be turned into a posit ve benefit in connection with the disease causing germs. The chain of events which followed makes one of the most fascinating stories of all time. Investi- gations revealed the startling fact that many of the disease causing germs either would not grow or could not live in the presence of this mold, yet the mold was harmless to human beings and could be cultivated and given to people in large ouantities thus curing many dreaded diseases. This event in medical science has been dupli- cated in many other walks of life. Americans dream wherever they are. Someone's day-dreams will have much to do with the course of world events which will follow the war. What America will become in
