SYNERGIST SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 1987 Just as footprints in the sand are impressions made by a human being, so are the photographs in this yearbook impressions of life at Science High School. Faculty, Staff, 9th, 10th, 11th graders, and especially the Seniors — the members of the Class of 1987 — all have contributed to the memories captured by the pictures and words in the 1987 Synergist. Years from now, we the Seniors will look at this book of memories and remember the faces, the places, and the happenings which affected our lives at Science High School. 2 SMILES Smiles are contagious. Smiles are happiness, cheerfulness, Joy. success, and friendship. Smiles express a myriad of possibilities. Smiles can be an invitation Or a gentle rejection. They portray innerfeelings. Catch a smile today! 6 7 FRIENDS ARE FOREVER Especially those that we've made here at Science High. They are by our side in good times and in bad. When everyone else gives up hope, a friend doesn't. A friend is a person who can give the right advice even if it involves personal sacrifice. We are happy to have been part of this Family of Friends at Science High. 8 The Eyes Have it Eyes are mysterious, black, and bold. What they tell no one knows. Is it interest of extreme boredom? Who knows? Who tells? When they wander, they tell thousands of tales. The interpretations are personal. But no one really knows. Do they look out to the future or reflect on the past? No one knows but the mind that controls. 13 14 SCHOOL What wonders there are to explore and explore, What marvels of nature and man! The land and the sky and the ocean’s roar, The rocks and the stars and the sand. Volcanoes and forests, prairies and hills, Ursa both Major and Minor as well, Whales and squid and tides and waves, Sun and moon which time do tell. And lines which measure, which bind, which tell How long, how far, how near. The fluids of nature, the gift of the sky, So cold, so hot appear. The story of man in song and verse, Of ages new and old, What cadence, what beauty, what joy to hear Life’s own story, vivid and bold. The wonders we see, the marvelous deeds Of beings like you and me, All these to explore and learn and feel And capture for eternity. The clay they used was a young child’s mind And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher; the tools he used Were books, music, and art. The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand, And a gentle, loving heart. Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch That was deft and sure, While the parent labored by his side And polished and smoothed it o’er. And when at last their task was done, They were proud of what they had wrought, For the things they had molded into the child Could neither be sold nor bought. And each agreed they would have failed If each had worked alone. For behind the teacher stood the school And behind the parent, the home. Author Unknown 32 THE CLASS OF 1990 K. Adams A. Everyone was surprised to board a bus that was meant to hold kindergarten students. At first the students were annoyed, but since the weather was cold, they actually enjoyed the cozy surroundings. Ms. Goldblatt’s group boarded the boat first at Sandy Hook and promptly froze to death. While on board, students measured water salinity, oxygen, and PH. They viewed horseshoe and hermit crabs. Mr. Micah s group walked along the beach and collected seashells. They also learned about ocean currents and soil erosion. Tired and weary, the Seniors boarded the bus with fond memories of an unforgettable day. so 51 Was it Really Bum Day? October 31 was the traditional “Bum Day at Science High. But was it really a Bum Day? Although some students were dressed as bums, others decided to dress in their own styles. We saw everything from a belly dancer to a baseball player to a beggar. Every costume was colorful and showed that all were enjoying themselves. We even had a clown who entertained the Senior gym class. But, let's not forget to include the people who did dress as bums. Many wore ragged clothing, weird wigs, and unusual shoes. The true spirit of Science High was reflected in extraordinary day. It was only Bum Day.” It was a day in which the students put their fantasies into costumes. 56 57 SENIORS WIN THE BIG ONE! NOVEMBER 26, 1987 Jr.-Sr. Basketball A SCIENCE HIGH TRADITION 58 SENIORS 23—JUNIORS21 The Senior basketball team dominated this traditional pre-Thanksgiving Day game and finished the afternoon with a 23-21 victory. From the dunking exhibition even before the game started to the tough “D” which forced many turnovers, our Seniors put on a display of exciting basketball. We’ll remember November 26,1987, as the day when the Senior Team produced a hard-earned victory in one of Science High’s longest traditions. 59 SENIORS VICTORIOUS Jr.-Sr. Volleyball December 23, 1986 60 ’Twas the day before vacation and all through the school, Seniors and Juniors were acting real cool. Yes, it was time for rejoicing and fun, but still there remained a task to be done. For this was the day to play the game, as Junior and Senior girls battled for fame. Volleyballs flew from ceiling to floor, some even reached the Y gym door. Here a spike, there a smash, oh what fun to see the girls run and run. And when it was over, the Seniors could say, “We played and we won, and we had a great day!” NICE GOING SENIORS! 62 64 KEISHA ABDULLAH HANSELLANDERSON JERRY ALSTON LATASHA A. BAGLEY JONATHAN A. Your constant planning and spirited work have motivated us. You have helped us to better ourselves in our studies. We appreciate your assistance in helping us to choose colleges. We thank you. We’ll miss you. Hasta la vista. Au revoir. Farewell. 79 ANGELJUARBE CLASS ADVISERS Mrs. Rocca and Mr. Brent. What would the Class of 1987 have been without you? We would not have had the organization to help plan class activities. We would not have had the funds available to pay our bills. We would not have been able to participate in all of the Senior Class functions. But most of all. we would not have had that spirit which makes the Class of 1987 unique. 80 With love and gratitude. The Class of 1987 vSome 11lemorabfe Quote A: The secret of getting ahead is getting started. Laugh and the class laughs with you, hut you stay after school alone. Education is what is left over after you have forgotten the facts. Everything requires effort; the only thing you can achieve without it is failure. Experience is the only school from which no one ever graduates. W ■hat the future has in store for you depends largely on what you place in store for the future. GRACIAS MERCI G RATI AS We, the Class of 1987, thank our homeroom teachers for helping us to reach our goal: graduation. 82 83 TOP TEN CONGRATULATIONS 84 4 — PAMELA DUNGEE 5 — SANDONNA BRYANT 6 — LETICIA RODRIGUEZ ___ 8 —TERESA BURNEY 9 — ROGER LEON 85 87 THE CLASS OF 1987 89 CHEERLEADERS Science High s cheerleaders are hot this year. Led by Senior Captain Dawn Fontaine and Junior Captain Cassandra Barnette, they have cheered our various basketball teams to many victories and pulled them through some surprising situations. Not only are these cheerleaders the fiercest, but they are also the most intelligent cheerleaders in Newark. After all, they are from Science High! Congratulations to our girls and to their advisor. The results from the 1986 season are an indication that Science High's runners were willing to pay the price to achieve success. Led by Alex Fernandez and Capt. Jose Mercado, the team showed that it is developing into a fine unit. Alex had an outstanding record which included 7 firsts. 3 seconds. 1 third, and 1 fourth. For the girls. Tanisha McGriff's 3 firsts and 1 second led the team. Tarvenia Eddings also recorded 2 seconds and 1 third. After just three varsity seasons. Coach Kenny Duke's runners have much to be proud of and much to look forward to in future seasons. Congratulations! % Front: Coach Kenny Duke. Saul Montanez, Cornell Morrison, Jesus Rodriguez. Both the boys' and girls' teams were very young and relatively inexperienced. The team captured championships in the first two tournaments of the season, the Oratory Shootout and the Harrison Christmas Tournament. Then came a streak of 10 more wins until the first loss, a tough one to a strong Group 4 Beleville team. Coach Gaylord's players ran into some powerful opposition in the last 10 games of the regular season, but they were able to finish at 18-4. Included in that record was Science s first appearance in the Essex County Tournament. But there was more to come! The team was seeded 1 in the North Jersey Section 2. Group 1 State Tournament. Victory 19 was a hard-earned 45-41 battle against a strong GlenRidge opponent. A capacity crowd at the Y roared its approval of every Charger basket and sent the team to meet Newark Tech in the sectional semifinals. Unfortunately, the season ended with that game as our team, plagued by fouls early in the contest, staged a comeback late in the 4th quarter only to fall short at the final buzzer. Seniors Dion, Malik. Donniell. Brian. Eric, and Hugh played brilliantly. Junior Hassan was among the leaders in scoring. Sophomore Travis was a key contributor in many games. We ll never forget the thrills of a magnificent 19-5 season. Congratulations to Coach Gaylord and the team! Thanks for the memories. 99 SENIORS Donniell Bright — Capt. Malik Jones — Capt. I thank the professional assistance of Mrs. Shirley Vetter from Lorstan-Thomas Studios and Mr. Joe Shoopman of Taylor Publishing. George Davis, Eddie Wingren, Adrien Baxter, Heidi Seabrooks SENIORS Jonathan Alston Terence Davis Roger Leon Another year of successful argumentation! This year in debate was long and hard, but in the end the time paid off. The debaters spent an average of 3-4 hours daily after school. They worked even harder this season so that they could maintain their excellent reputation as a debate power. The year started in September with the training of the novice squad. With their knowledge and desire to keep up the school's reputation, they won numerous trophies and speaker awards against teams from New York State's finest schools. They also learned how to become a part of a family and to take on a sense of real responsibility. The varsity members — Terence. Roger. Diana. Wakilah. Marlon. Steven. Kendra, and Dana — took on the bulk of the responsibility. They attended tournaments almost every week for a grueling 3 days of work in intense competition. Although there were some disappointments, they always came out with some recognition. Roger and Terence were quite successful at a number of the most prestigious tournaments throughout the United States. In the tournaments at Blenbrook. Southern Illinois and at Emory University. Roger and Terence kept up with the very best teams representing every state in the nation. Roger and Terence kept up their successful work to recapture the varsity state championship with a preliminary record of 4 wins which helped them advance to the final round against the top seeded team. Princeton High School. They were hard fighters and brought themselves a 3-0 decision, thus recapturing the state title for Science High School for the 5th time since the beginning of the Debate Program. This was an excellent year for debaters at Science High School. 119 CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE THE FINEST! KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!
